South America to Canada with some bits inbetween

Myself and my girlfriend have decided that its time to do a bit of travelling together. I went travelling round the world in 2009 with STA travel which was great, but obviously since then prices have rocketed.

Basically what we want is to either volenteer for a while and then travel or do a working holiday.

Does anyone know the best way to do this type of trip on a budget? ideally a trip starting in South America and ending in Canada with some volenteering inbetween somewhere!!!!

we would take approx 6 months in total staying with family in america and canada to lower costs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Gazl50,

6 months is a short time. The flights in South America within South America are very costly. there is no Ryan air a such for international flights within south America but flight to the US especially Miami is on the cheap side. So maybe a flight to Buenos Aires, it's going to cost you to get there and cost you to be there so I would move through fast see what you want and head to Bolivia. Here it is cheap. I good place to volunteer work as there are lots of stuff with kids and animals and the cost of living is the cheapest. So after that your next biggest cost is Machu Picchu which you have to go. You can get it cheep there. So don't buy anything online for that or with STA it will cost you more than double (or more). That’s for a tour and then you can always make your own way up with local buses and stuff, so just wait until your there. Now flights from Lima on to Miami or the US are some of the cheapest.

So this I think is what I would recommend.

Anyway you’re going to love South America; I’m in love and can’t wait to go back.

All the best with whatever you decide,

Check out Dragoman, they have some epic journey trips that link many of their smaller trips together, transecting S.America. A long time ago, they had a North to South trip from Alaska to the tip of Argentina but I think it was about 26 weeks or something like that.

Anyway, you may not choose to go with them, or other overland specialist company like Gap Adventures but you can get an idea bout travel routes, etc to help conceptualize what a S.America to Canada trip might look like and where you might want to invest your time on just a trip.

After doing some preliminary research, you might find that certain segments of the trip would be good to do with a traditional overland company while some segments would be best done independently. Or you might decide to just book up a company so you can join some small groups throughout your travels.

Hope this is helpful.
