Picking up bags before final destination

Hi,

We have booked a one way ticket from London to Jakarta which connects through Kuala Lumper on Malaysia airlines. We want to pick up the bags in Kuala Lumper and not get on the connecting flight because it was cheaper to do this than fly directly to Kuala Lumper. We are at the London airport and Malaysia airlines will not let us pick up our bags in Kuala Lumper and insist they are transferred directly to our final destination.

Does anyone know a way around this? Has anyone had the same problem and can help?

Cheers

Tom

Does anyone know a way around this? - There isn't, what you are trying is hidden city ticketing. Airlines know this which is why they wont short check bags.

Too bad you didn't research the issue before you bought the tickets, Airlines are not stupid. Enjoy Jakarta,

It would indeed have been cheaper to just get off in Kuala Lumpur if you had been travelling with carry on baggage only. It never is if you have hold baggage, as airlines are wise to that trick. It is called Hidden City Ticketing, and you've unfortunately found how they counter it. As it is you now have only two options - take the flights as booked and then buy another ticket back to Kuala Lumpur, or ask Malaysian to amend your tickets to terminate in Kuala Lumpur. They will certainly charge for this. It's a matter of which turns out cheaper.

I suppose you could just abandon your baggage in London and buy new in Kuala Lumpur too if that works out cheaper still.

What if we just don't get on the connecting flight. I don't believe airlines are allowed to send bags without you on the flight (unless it is the airline mistake).

Or what if we have a medical emergency in Kuala Lumper and you say you need to go see a doctor.

Possible ways around it?

You would probably be charged to reclaim your luggage. Airlines are wise to these kind of tricks.

I don't believe airlines are allowed to send bags without you on the flight (unless it is the airline mistake) - Airlines can send bags on a flight without the passenger but if they are off loaded it doesn't mean you can get them without a lot of questions.

Or what if we have a medical emergency in Kuala Lumper and you say you need to go see a doctor. - If you are suggesting feigning an illness then I think you need to reconsider your travel plans

Will they allow you to pay a change fee to end the ticket in KUL? How does that compare with the price of buying a one way ticket back to KUL from Jakarta?

If you abandon your journey in Kuala Lumpur you run the risk that the bags continue to Jakarta anyway - have you checked whether Malaysian Aviation Security regulations require bags to be reconciled with passengers?

If they offload the bags because you are a no-show at the gate they will incur extra costs with baggage handling, and delays to the flight. They may seek to recover these costs and will have your bags hostage until you pay. You also risk having an interesting time with the Malaysian police, who may think you are involved in anything between smuggling and terrorist activities, especially if you stage a fake medical emergency.

Had you booked the ticket originally with an overnight stay in Kuala Lumpur before continuing to Jakarta you might have been able to get bags short-checked on the basis of needing toiletries and clean clothes for the morning. Too late now, as the check-in staff will be wise to what you are doing.

Given how strict these countries are about things like drugs and smuggling I do not advise you to do anything that would piss off the authorities over there. You make them unload a flight by not boarding the second leg, they can retaliate by doing something nefarious to your bags. Keep your life simple, do the right thing, and just adjust your itinerary to what you really want to do. Or travel without checked baggage and end your flight in KL.

Just imagine how many passengers that you will be inconveniencing if the airline decides to unload everyone to match the baggage to the passengers on board.
