As long as they are empty when you cross security and they fit in your hand luggage, why not.

yes . In fact there are airports such as SFO that have water fountains for such bottles instead of the normal ones we see where the water comes up from spouts and is hard to fill bottles with.

Depends where you are flying from/ to. In the UK you can't take any container bigger than 100 ml through airport security.

You can take containers bigger than 100 ml through, when flying to/from the UK. I always bring one or more empty drink bottles with me.

It does depend. I've been through non-U.S. airports where empty water bottles are specifically listed as not allowed through the security checkpoint..

I do that too, always travel with an empty bottle, refill airside from fountain or ice tea in lounge. We do not buy bottle water to reduce waste.
