French Riviera

We plan to spend a week during May/June 2012 in French Riviera with our base in NICE. Being our first trip, we will appreciate ideas/suggestions to visit places, things not to miss there, etc.We are open to ideas between car rental and using public transportation.

Thanks in advance

Dilipm - you might do better to post in the appropriate European forums (France, Switzerland) as you will get much more feedback on your questions.

We just spend two week visiting all towns and villages for our travel business.

Staying in Nice is more central, especially if you plan to travel by bus (see below)

Visit Villefranche-sur-Mer, Eze (a bit touristy) and Menton between Nice and the Italian border. Going west visit definitively Old Antibes and Biot. And if you are the type visit Cannes. Monaco offers the Oceanographic Museum.

We used both car and bus. If you plan to rent a car do not take anything bigger than a Compact. We got an upgrade to an Intermediate. It was awful. Those cars are just too big if you are not familiar with the area. And parking in a big car is very difficult...we had a problem dropping off the car at the Nice station last week. If you drop it off there don't take it up to their drop off area on the 6th floor garage behind the Ibis Hotel. They want you to take it there because it's easier for them but don't. Drop it off right in front of their office and let them do the work. (On the last turn in that very difficult and narrow winding garage we got a scratch on the car and Auto Europe (a great company) is still trying to finalize our problem. (It was their fault but they billed our credit card for over 800 Euros)

The busses are great and cost only one Euro per person on way. You can go one way as far as the busses go...Menton, Monaco, Antibes, Cannes, Biot for just one Euro...the best bargain in France. Monday we have to go back to Menton. We take the bus for just 2 Euros round-trip.
