It was a dark and stormy night

It was so wet, windy, and chilly that I decided to dine at home and called Gurkhas. They took my order and gave a delivery time. Food arrived on schedule and I was very pleased with my Roti, Momos (dumplings), and Beef Curry (this was slices of steak in a curry sauce). The sizes were good, as were the prices and quality. Vegetarian options are well catered for.

Best place to hang out and great Nepalese cuisine

I have never ever visited such a place where I found a delicious Nepalese traditional foods. I really love the customer service and sound environment of the restaurant. If you have not visited, you are missing a lot. Walk in once and experience the real taste of Nepalese foods.

Great food but poor organisation

I phone booked a table for 11 people 6 days prior to the date of Melbourne Cup Eve. I amended the total number the day before of the booking. I arrived early on the due date. The person in charge checked the booking and couldn't find it! The restaurant was nearly fully booked, so I became quite alarmed at this development as it is a smallish space.. The two men in charge seemed at a loss as to what to do and then proceeded to start moving tables around, then stopped and indicated we could have a large table already set up for another group. The table was not set for the required number. This went unchecked for awhile, until I drew attention to it and requested that it was completed. One friend turned up unexpectedly, swelling our total number to 12 people. After this terrible start, things did not run smoothly throughout the evening. We ordered individually and after taking our orders, waited for a long time before our meals arrived- patrons who had arrived after us were served before us. During the meal plates were not cleared away, we had to request refills for water jugs; the table service was managed very badly. There was a live musician up one end of the space who performed very loudly to the point of us unable to hear each other talk. One of our group took it upon himself to go up to the performer and ask him to turn his sound down, which he did promptly. Throughout the meal, an older staff member who throughout the meal, delivered dishes and took drink orders, had a very impatient manner to the point of rudeness when taking orders. At the completion of our meal, as we lined up to pay at the counter, we waited and waited for someone to attend to us. It was a narrow space and one of the male staff, an older man, was behind one of our group and placed his hand lightly on her back, excused himself but pushed her ( not hard) to one side, to get through. I witnessed him doing this. I spoke to him and told him that his behaviour was rude and that he should have waited for her to move out of the way. He apologised, nevertheless he shouldn't have acted in that way with a customer. Overall, despite the food being very tasty with reasonably large serving size, I will not be returning to this restaurant, nor will any of the group. The staff at this restaurant seemed poorly organised, unable to cope with a fully booked space and two male members lacked fundamental personal manners towards some members of our group. I do not recommend this restaurant unless you don't mind poor service and staff who lack basic manners. I NEVER write a negative review on Trip Advisor, but there were far too many poorly managed situations during the evening, with the staff of this restaurant to ignore.

We dined in for a family meal, with Momos and Thali. The Momos were dumplings, filled with a mix of onion, carrot, cabbage, and spices, accompanied by a curry sauce. They were magnificent and all were happy with them. The two Thali we chose were a set of dishes (one set was meat based - goat and the other vegetarian). Included were rice, curry, a spicy soup, papadam, and a spinach dish. This was popular, too. The only downside was that one person's main meal did not turn up and by the time we realised it was not coming, she was disappointed and had lost interest. Otherwise the service was great and we were brought cold water with our menus.

Have been to this place twice in the last month and it is amazing. Easily the best Gurkhas I've been into. Service is attentive and friendly and the food is prompt, fresh and flavoursome. Great for large groups of just one or two - we love it!

Great vego food & wonderfully friendly service

I loved this restaurant! The people are so warm and friendly, and the vegetarian banquet was one of the best vego meals I've had!! Everything about this place is great, including the music and atmosphere. Even the non-vegetarian eater with me was blown away by the food. I can't wait to return.

Went with a group of friends. Found the service to be light on information. Eg ordered two different types of roti, butter and the gurkahs special babar one. When they came out it was all in the same basket and the waitress said they are the exact same thing. So we had a basket of many, many plain roti. I had the cream chicken curry. I liked the taste of the curry but the chicken was chicken thigh and a lot of skin and fatty bits. I was not a fan and didn’t eat it.

Don't judge a restaurant by its shop front

Doesn't look much from the outside, and the inside is not much better, but the food and service are great. Good selection of dishes that should please all tastes. I can only assume they are all Nepalese inspired, but as I am not an expert on Nepalese food, I cannot say. Reasonable prices, friendly service, byo wine, order a wide range of dishes and enjoy the tastes of Nepalese cuisine.

Went back with a group and ordered a variety of different curries and side dishes. Loved all the curries and everything was delicious. A few more prawns in the prawn curry would be nice... We will be back!

Fantastic meal

We came here for an early dinner before our show at the nearby Spotted Mallard and it was absolutely fantastic. Very friendly and welcoming service, reasonable priced meals and the food was beautiful. We shared and ordered pakoras and the roti stuffed with potato and for mains we shared Chicken Marsala and the goats curry which is a specialty. For dessert we ordered the mango ice cream made with condensed milk and pistachios. Everything was tasty, not overly spicy but utterly delicious. Place is BYO wine too. Highly recommend.

Nepalese at its best with a western influences

True Nepalese is Dahlbut but Gurkhas seems to have added a bit of western taste without losing its Nepal origins. We feasted on both vegetarian and meat dishes. The tastes were brilliant and despite being full we eat the lot. Very very tasty. Would recommend highly.

Could not be happier with the meal that the group enjoyed at Gurkhas Restaurant. This restaurant serves honest, well-cooked, affordable Nepalese food. We ordered a wide variety of curries from the menu and shared them. The group tried chicken, goat and chili beef dishes as well as some calamari. Everyone had roti and steamed rice as accompaniment and a mango mohi to drink as well as some extra beers and a cocktail. Nothing was too spicy and everything was delicious. The service was excellent. The cost was about $3O per person - awesome value for a great meal. Would definitely love to dine here again!

Normally good but deteriorating in food and service.

Been to this restaurant many times over 10 year period (used to be my first choice when in area for work) but last few visits I think food portions have got smaller, more salty and bland plus beer is normally not cold. Service used to be great as well but also gone backwards. I mean tonight the main waiter who has been there for years is out the front smoking (after doing a few dodgy indiscreet table visits to his smoking partner) with inexperienced staff inside mucking up orders. Don't get me wrong food has generally been great but there are many better option snow in Sydney Road Brunswick. The main waiter has also become more abrupt with his staff in public view.
