Ciao Mamma! is an Italian restaurant in Melbourne that I had the pleasure of visiting during my stay in the city. As a southern Italian living in London, I'm quite picky when it comes to Italian food abroad, but I must say that this restaurant...did not disappoint. In fact, it was the best Italian food I have ever eaten abroad. The food was incredible! We tried the arancini and the fried calamari as starters, and then ordered pasta as our main. I ordered rigatoni with lamb ragù, which tasted exactly like the food my mum or my grandma used to make me when I was living in Italy. Additionally, I was very impressed by their attention to customers' dietary needs. In particular, the restaurant offers many gluten-free options and low FODMAP dishes, which was a great advantage for my husband. The atmosphere of the restaurant was welcoming and pleasant, which made our meal even more enjoyable. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the owner offered us some Limoncello at the end of the dinner (proper Italian experience)! In summary, I highly recommend Ciao Mamma! restaurant to anyone looking for high-quality Italian food in Melbourne. I can't wait to go back the next time I'm in town! P.S. The fried donuts were also amazing and gluten freeMore

The food is okay, but not worth the astronomical prices. Definitely don’t get the set menu. It cost a bomb, and walked away still hungry. Didn’t even get bread. Not recommended.

A booking was made for 3 people at Ciao Mamma for Saturday night 7:30pm. When we arrived approx. 5-10mins before the booked time, the young man behind the counter looked a little flustered about our booking and kept looking at a small empty table, set...for 2 and another small table very close to it, with 2 guests eating. After going away and talking with another staff member, he came back to tell us they would add another chair on the small table for us and they proceed to push the table even closer to the other table. This table WAS NOT suitable for 3 people. We pointed out how cramped and unacceptable it was. The reply was, "Its fine, we do this all the time" They refused to give us a suitable table, telling us, the other tables were booked. We pointed out we had booked also, for 3 people. The staff member just looked at us and said, well thats your table. We decided to leave and actually had a wonderful meal at The Cornish Arms, were the staff were very accommodating. Maybe you should honour your bookings and not cram people in just because you accepted a walk in and sat them on the other half of our table.More

We went to ciao mamma expecting beautiful fresh dishes like Melbourne’s Italian restaurants do so well and we were so shocked at the price for the tiniest serving of pasta and a menu that explains pasta and sauce like you are at a kids party...! So much sauce also the small amount of pasta just swam in the sauce in these tiny bowls like you’re grandma would serve pasta in. the Napoli was pale with no distinct herbs or olive oli but butter WTF etc mushroom sauce so buttery!! Why do they put butter in the Italian sauces, we sat their shocked at everything and felt bad to say anything as the staff are very nice. The desserts looked terrible bland as the pastas We won’t be going back $139 for 3 people Sorry it’s back to our favourite Tiama’s in carlton that also do GF . The most boring old school 80,s restaurant I have ever seen we thought we had driven through a small country town and got stuck having to eat at the only restaurant that was open As another review said only a few KM a at from carlton so do youself a favour and go there insteadMore

Given the basic menu the food should have been on point. It lacked flavor and was basically sauce slipped over pasta. Service was poor. Drive the extra five mins for a good bowl of pasta in Carlton.

Honesty fantastic. As a coeliac the gluten free struggle is real - especially with Italian food. I have dined here twice and tried pasta and lots of entrees. Gluten free pasta is fantastic and my partner says it’s the only proper Al dente pasta he...has had in Australia. Lovely, super attentive staff (even offered to mind my dog while I paid). Added plus of an amazing negroni and a good wine list. Can’t recommend enough!More

Hidden of Sydney Rd, this gem is great for coeliacs and pasta lovers! The restaurant has a great open layout and we were seated in an indoor/outdoor area = amazing! The staff and owners were lovely and the food AMAZING! The only downfall was the...drink service - it was very slow. This was due to the bar person also taking payments, orders etc. Would be worth having two people behind there. We started with the arancini and polenta fingers. Followed by the gnocchi pesto and ricotta canoli, to die for! Would definitely visit again! Well priced, well positioned and we were certainly well fed!More

Food was ok. Portions small. The pasta is good but hard to taste as there is way too much sauce put in each dish. The traditional spaghetti Bolognese was so salty it could not be eaten. The pasta is supposed to be the hi-light of...the dish but as there is too much sauce all you can taste is the sauce. Disappointed really.More

Outdoor seating was great as it was off the main street so not noisy. Undercover to protect from (most) weather and outdoor heaters. Staff are friendly and attentive. There are some home made pasta dishes and a good variety to choose from. A great spot...in Brunswick.More

Knowing that as a Coeliac I can get a big variety of dining options and eat safely is rare, but Mumma delivers! This place is my go-to whenever I’m in Melbourne, I love it so much that the minute I heard the covid state borders...were opening, I booked dinner and then planned an 8 hour road trip to catch up with friends. It’s a casual affair, and the noise bounces, but I’m sure that after a few cocktails and limoncellos last night, it was our table making the most noise anyway! Having a laugh and conversation with the staff always makes for a better night and on each of the four occasions I’ve been here, I’ve always encountered that, even sharing Limoncello recipes one time. But the food. Yum! I love the food. Mumma feeds you well, very well. The GF Arancini balls and donuts alone are worth the visit for anyone who needs to eat Gluten-free!More

This eatery presents well from the street but we found it served the typical bland, unexciting and carb-heavy food that passes for Italian cuisine in Australia. However lots of folk like bland and safe so good on them.

I never have Italian food when traveling because usually it is just a bad copy of the food I have home. A friend took me there and have to admit it was a very pleasant surprise! Very nice place, incredibly friendly staff and most of...all good pasta cooked the way it should be!!! Highly recommended from a very demanding Italian guy! :-)More
