Stopped of a Stonehaven on a wet and windy Saturday lunchtime and were attracted to this restaurant because of the harbour location and how busy the restaurant was. We found the food and service to be very good and was amazed how busy this restaurant was which tends to indicate the restaurant is obviously doing the basics well. Would definitely go to this restaurant again next time we are in Stonehaven. Recommended

Was really disappointed after reading all the great reviews. I ordered the steak which although was cooked as I asked was not presented well. For ÂŁ24.50 it arrived on the plate with 3 onion rings a small handful of mushrooms, half a tomato and a small portion of fries. Poor value and not well presented. My daughters crispy fish burger was a piece of haddock (what is usually served as the fish & chips) sticking out of a floury bun accompanied by yet another small portion of anaemic fries. The only thing that saved it was the lovely coleslaw she said. Staff on the other hand were excellent tho

The service wasn't great. The food was really overpriced! The 'gourmet' burger was awful. Chewy, cold, half eaten. Another server cleared our plates and asked if we enjoyed, we explained the burger was bad and weren't offered a refund, despite it being half eaten. Had a better burger in chain pub grub for half the price. Bit pretentious for the price really...wouldn't recommend not the best experience.

Disappointing to read this as our burgers (and all our other food) have been very favourably reviewed many times before. Something evdently went wrong here, though. Please contact us by email and we can do something about it. Simon Cruickshank Proprietor

We first visited this gem of an inn, a couple of years ago. Delighted to report that it has maintained its high standards of service, food and surroundings. Enjoyed super fish and chips, small portions for a light lunch, which were expertly cooked, beautifully presented and the freshest of fish tasted divine! This place is a must from now on - whenever we are near Stonehaven.

Popped in after visit to Dunnottar Castle - managed to get a table (would recommend booking as reduced capacity with the covid pandemic). Friendly staff. Great food - we had the fish burger (basically battered fish in a bun with tarter sauce and mushy peas - really tasty and excellent portion) and the king prawn enchiladas (again very tasty). We were lucky and had table by window so lovely to look out at the harbour.

We had booked online for our wedding anniversary but when we arrived the restaurant was full and our booking had not gone through. later we were told they had changed their email address so the one we used on their booking site didn't actually work. we were given a small table in the bar area which was very busy. Food took 45 minutes to arrive and was basically all deep fried, including the veggie burger, I was so hungry I ate most of it but then had indigestion in the night. My husband had a pork chop which was very dry and he left most of it and went away hungry. I wouldn't eat there again. the waitress was very pleasant though so a good place for a drink but not to eat.

I don't understand this review because you can't book online for tables at the Ship Inn. You can book a room through our website but not a table and this has always been the case. And we have not changed our email address - we have 2 email addresses which both work. If you emailed us and didn't receive a reply, I can only assume that the address was incorrect as we always reply to emails. If we receive a request for a table, we reply promptly to advise if we can oblige. If you don't receive a reply, it's because we didn't receive a message so don't be surprised if there is no table reserved for you. As for the menu - there are a few deep-fried dishes such as fish and chips and chicken fillets and plenty that are not - our menu is pretty extensive and varied and I believe the Ship Inn is an excellent place to eat which is why we are so busy. I am sorry if the pork chop wasn't up to standard but, if you had expressed your dis-satisfaction at the time, something could have been done about it. Simon Cruickshank Proprietor

Arrived on Saturday evening, we were 10 minutes late and the waitress seemed very cross. The food was lovely, but each course was served with a grimace. We were in a party of four and spent almost £200, When the waitress came with the bill my husband couldn’t help but ask what we had done to make her so unpleasant, she then informed us that there was a 2 hour dining slot and we had exceeded the allotted time. My husband told her we were unaware of this policy as no-one had intimated this on our arrival, she then mumbled she thought we had been told. She proceeded to pick her teeth while waiting to be paid for the meal. What could have been a delightful dining experience completely ruined by awful waitress.

Together with my wife and teenage children we dined at the Captains Table at The Ship Inn. The restaurant is located on the harbour side at Stonehaven with is a beautiful setting. The menu and specials board was reasonably varied. The service was friendly and the food good. The menu is well priced and you receive healthy portion sizes. You get good value for money here.

It has been a couple of years since our last visit here but still doing everything so well. An excellent range of options very well prepared by the kitchen and very good staff make this a very good choice for lunch. We didn't book ahead but it was very busy on the Friday we visited which was good to see but probably best to book ahead. Will definitely return next time we are in the area.

We were 6 for lunch on Saturday 4th January, 2020. I had asked for a window table when I booked, and that is what we got. We were rather disappointed that the only fish/seafood items on the menu, (other than battered/breaded haddock), were unavailable. Because of dietary requirements I then had a problem choosing something else. I'm guessing no fish/seafood may have been due to no boats being out over New Year? We will bear this in mind now, and won't visit again at that time of year, as most of us want to eat fish/seafood when at the Ship Inn. What we all ate was good, service was ok, (not as good as usual), but it was quite busy. Not our best visit though.

Dear Larsonsmummy - thanks for taking the time to get in touch with a review and we're sorry to learn you felt it wasn't up to our usual standards. We pride ourselves on serving fresh produce and you are correct that seasonality and availability does play a part in what we are able to serve. We do try to accommodate dietary needs and we hope that our team members were able to help with some alternative selections. We very much hope that we will see you back at The Ship in future.

Visited here for the first time and really enjoyed it. Service was very good, aside from a little wait before anyone came to take a drinks order, despite it not being busy and there being plenty of staff. Food was delicious. I had the fish and chips and the batter was so light. Side of homemade coleslaw was delicious. My partner had the mixed grill which was cooked really well and delicious. All in all was very good, however we decided to have the locally made frozen yogurt, which was very tasty, however it was ÂŁ6.75 for two scoops which I thought was very expensive.

I visited this restaurant with my husband and 13 year old son for lunch whilst visiting the nearby Dunnottar Castle. We had booked a table before travelling (a good job too as the restaurant was booked up!). The staff were friendly the food was excellent. The only slight mishap we had is that my son ordered the gammon and, whilst it was excellent, it wasn't what he was used to (real, fresh gammon as opposed to those pressed processed circles). I gave him some of the home-made chicken fillets I had ordered (which were amazing!) and he really liked those so I asked the waitress if I could order some of those for him instead. I made a point of saying there was nothing wrong with the food, just that it wasn't what he was used to and she ordered some chicken for him instead. She couldn't have been more helpful and we really enjoyed the rest of our meals. This really is a fabulous restaurant with top-quality food set on the harbourside. I would highly recommend it for any age group or occasion and would certainly visit again if I was in the area.

Visited whilst on holiday in Scotland, saw the pub, liked the menu so booked up. Myself, husband and daughter had lobster risotto for starters which was delicious and creamy. I then had a huge portion of mussels and chips, my only complaint was I had to ask for a spoon to finish the sauce which was far too good to waste- perhaps supply one with the dish? My husband had the mixed grill which he enjoyed and our daughter had the salmon- she said it was very good but would have liked a slightly larger portion. Service was good and attentive. We will be back when we next come to Scotland

Visited about 4pm. Very friendly welcome. My husband had the Piri piri fish goujons. They were very good. I had the fish and chips, have you say the fish was cooked beautifully, the batter was so light and crispy. My daughter had Mac and cheese, said it was good but the sauce could have been a little bit thicker.. staff were very friendly. Would definitely return here.
