Unfortunately the donga had rotten food in the fridge from a month before. However the guys were really good and swapped us to a different one straight away. We had dinner at the tavern, the food was great. Thanks especially to Steven who helped us with the accommodation, served us food and drink and provided great overall customer service - really appreciated!

When I think back on my time at The Red Sands Tavern, it’s with a deep sense of gratitude and accomplishment. Completing my 88 days of farm or regional work for visa requirements was a daunting prospect initially, but thanks to Phil—the previous owner of the tavern—and the unforgettable experiences my partner and I shared there, it turned out to be one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. The Red Sands Tavern isn’t just a workplace; it’s a small, remote outpost that embodies the spirit of rural Australia. Situated in the vast, rugged beauty of the outback, this tavern became a temporary home, a workplace, and a life lesson all rolled into one. While the work was tough and the location far removed from the conveniences of city life, the experience left a lasting impact on me, helping to shape my journey to full residency in Australia. Finding Opportunity in the Outback When my partner and I began searching for opportunities to complete the 88 days of regional work required for our second-year working holiday visas, we quickly realized how challenging it could be to find the right fit. Many stories circulated about exploitative employers, subpar living conditions, or unsustainable workloads. Naturally, we were wary. Enter Phil, the owner of The Red Sands Tavern at the time. From the moment we reached out, Phil stood out for his genuine demeanor and willingness to provide us with a chance. He didn’t promise an easy ride, but he offered honest work, fair pay, and a chance to experience life in the heart of the outback. For that, I’ll always be grateful. When my partner and I arrived, we were struck by how remote the tavern truly was. The surrounding landscape was barren yet beautiful, stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a far cry from the bustling cities and beaches we’d grown accustomed to during our travels, but there was something magical about it. The Work: Tough but Rewarding Working at The Red Sands Tavern wasn’t a walk in the park. The tasks were varied, ranging from kitchen work and cleaning to serving customers and helping maintain the property. The hours could be long, and the physical demands were intense at times. But looking back, it was exactly what I needed—a chance to push my limits and prove to myself that I could handle challenges in unfamiliar territory. The tavern catered to a mix of locals, truck drivers, and travelers passing through the area. Serving this diverse clientele came with its own set of challenges, but it also made the work dynamic and engaging. Some days were busier than others, but there was never a dull moment. Phil had a knack for balancing high expectations with encouragement. He expected us to work hard and learn quickly, but he was always there with a kind word or a bit of advice when we needed it. This combination of accountability and support made the work feel meaningful. The Community: Bonds Forged in the Outback One of the most rewarding aspects of working at The Red Sands Tavern was the sense of community. Living and working in such a remote location meant that everyone—employees, locals, and even the occasional traveler—relied on one another. This fostered a camaraderie that’s hard to find elsewhere. My partner and I formed strong bonds with our fellow workers, sharing meals, stories, and laughter after long shifts. The locals, too, were incredibly welcoming, offering insights into life in the outback and treating us like part of the community. Phil played a significant role in cultivating this sense of belonging. He made sure everyone felt valued, whether by organizing small gatherings or simply checking in to see how we were settling in. Living Remotely: Challenges and Joys Life at The Red Sands Tavern came with its fair share of challenges. The remoteness of the location meant limited access to amenities, unpredictable weather, and the occasional bout of homesickness. Internet connectivity was spotty, and trips to the nearest town for supplies were infrequent. But these challenges also came with unexpected joys. Watching the sun rise over the outback, with its vibrant reds and oranges painting the sky, was a daily reminder of the beauty of this remote land. Nights under the stars, far from the light pollution of the cities, were nothing short of breathtaking. Living simply allowed me to appreciate the little things—a good meal after a long day, a chat with a friendly local, or even just the satisfaction of completing a challenging task. It was a lifestyle that encouraged resilience, adaptability, and gratitude. A Stepping Stone to Residency The 88 days of regional work weren’t just about meeting visa requirements for me. They were a stepping stone toward something much greater: full residency in Australia. My time at The Red Sands Tavern played a pivotal role in this journey, helping me to understand and appreciate the unique challenges and rewards of life in regional Australia. Phil’s decision to take a chance on my partner and me made all the difference. Without this opportunity, I might not have been able to complete the required work or gain the valuable life skills that came with it. Today, as a resident with full working rights, I often reflect on my time at the tavern as a key turning point in my Australian story. Looking to the Future: Would I Return? If The Red Sands Tavern were to ever reach out for employees again, I wouldn’t hesitate to consider it. The experience, though challenging, was incredibly rewarding, and the lessons I learned have stayed with me to this day. I know now what to expect—the hard work, the remote location, and the unique demands of the job. But I also know the rewards: the sense of accomplishment, the connections made, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself. Gratitude for Phil and the Red Sands Tavern At the heart of my experience is a deep gratitude for Phil. His willingness to take us in, trust us with the responsibilities of the job, and treat us with fairness and respect made all the difference. He exemplified what it means to be a great employer—someone who leads with integrity and fosters a sense of community. To this day, I think of Phil and The Red Sands Tavern with fondness and respect. The lessons I learned there—about hard work, resilience, and the value of community—are lessons I carry with me in every aspect of my life. Conclusion: A Chapter Worth Sharing The Red Sands Tavern may be remote, but its impact on my life has been anything but small. It was a place where I worked hard, grew as a person, and laid the foundation for a future in Australia. To anyone considering a stint at The Red Sands Tavern, I’d say this: be prepared for a challenge, but know that the rewards are worth it. It’s not just a job; it’s an experience that will stay with you long after your time there is done. For me, it was a stepping stone to residency, a lesson in perseverance, and a reminder of the power of community. And for that, I’ll always be grateful to Phil, my fellow workers, and the incredible landscape of the outback. If the opportunity ever arises again, I wouldn’t hesitate to return to The Red Sands Tavern—not just as an employee, but as someone who knows just how transformative the experience can be.

Order grilled barramundi The fish was burnt and dry, no garlic sauce like advertised, chips weren’t salted and tasted of oil and veggies were old and not cooked properly. If place was busy could understand to a point, however there was only a small group of people outside. Paid $37 for something I have to throw out Disappointed!!! Was going to go back and complain however lady at food counter was rude and abrupt and decided making up forks and knives was more important

2 of us ordered the pizza $ 20 special I was under charged but my friend was overcharged by $ 5 , I was asked to pay the difference for mine and when I went to do so I was referred to the female bar staff for the night , she told me I had to go to the special till to pay the difference, no problem. Jokingly I suggested I should pay only half as it wasn’t my fault. She said “ do u want the pizza or not!! “ I said yes, and sat down. When I checked my credit card I found I was overcharged $ 5 , same as my friend. I bought it to her attention and at first refused to acknowledge the mistake, and when I showed her she retrieved $5 from a different till and slammed it down and said “ there’s your $5 now f##k off! “ I suggested she read the reviews for the red sands and she said loudly I don’t care! My pizza turned up and it was inedible, burnt, see photos attached of my friend’s pizza, my pizza, I mentioned to her it seemed odd that both of us were overcharged $5 and wondered how many people hadn’t checked and have been overcharged! This seemed to really upset her. She refused to serve me for the rest of the night. So if u want overpriced beer, no value for money for your meals, rude and abrupt service, then the red sands is the place to go. People person? No way, she’s definitely not suited for hospitality industry.

Having stayed at the Red Sands it was extremely convenient being able to walk over to the tavern for dinner and a couple of drinks. We started with some tacos then couldn’t resist having a wood fired pizza. The best part was that sitting outside we could watch it being cooked! We ended the night off with a game of pool, had a great time.

Do not plan accommodation at Red Sands Tavern, Newman WA. They do not honour accommodation bookings even though it was made in November 2023.and confirmation was received. They do not respond to emails and phone calls go unanswered. We were left without accommodation two days before we were to Arrive even though several emails were sent and several phone calls were made. They cater for the FIFO trade and the general public can go hop. Their customer service is appalling as is their lack of care.

After a break down we needed a place to stay. Red Sands Hotel was the perfect place for us with good value clean accommodation and a hotel with great meals. The service was good, helpful and friendly. We would definitely recommend Red Sands for a stay or at least a great meal.
