I walked in, spoke to the man that works there, introduced myself, shook his hand and asked if they had an outside seating area for smokers. I said I would like to have coffee and a light meal. He said 'Sure, we do' and pointed me in the direction of the back yard. I noticed there was no shade and... More

We had a superb time hanging with Mr Proctor Sims. He is a true getleman. We enjoyed his company and all his stories. He's got a quaint little restaurant with a cute little bar. We got served homemade oven baked lamb with boiled potatoes and veggies which was excellent. I see a lot of posts saying that this establishment is... More

We arrived in Philippolis quite late, but booked a table in advance. We were greeted by a lovely lady called Christina, and we were the only people in the restaurant. She took our orders and went off to prepare it whilst we were allowed to wander around the very impressive bookshop - really a great collection. Halfway through dinner the... More

Went to this restaurant on recommendation of the lady at the guest house we stayed at. It was a Sunday evening. Menu very limited. Owner & waiter , Richard, very charming old chap, but aware. Had mutton knuckles and a nice bottle of red, from his limited selection. All was fine until the bill arrived, not to cheap, R 511... More

We heard about Oom Japie se Huis from friends and decided to visit and drove from Colesberg to Philippolis. The experience wasn't terrible but disappointing though. The food was deliciously prepared but VERY basic. The bill for 5 people accounted to R1600 which is a bit steep for butternut soup, a basic roasted leg of lamb, carrots, green beans and... More

We were the only diners (in the middle of the week), but Christina provided us with one of the best racks of lamb we've had in a long time - typical Karoo meal. Simple, but delicious. A bottle of champagne which we chose & opened ourselves added to the joy of yet another special meal in the middle of nowhere.... More

This quaint restaurant is an absolute must for anyone that enjoys the small country town feel and happens to be travelling in the vicinity of Phillipolis. Mr Richard Proctor Simms, who owns Oom Japie se Winkel, is probably one of the most interesting people I have ever met. This 80 year old gentleman entertained us all night -firstly in the... More

Waited ages for the food. They got the date of the booking wrong so they were not prepared. Meal was very simple and i didn't expect to pay 130 rand for 3 small lamb chops, some veg and a boiled potato. Prices were not displayed or menu provided. You would expect to pay these prices at a great restaurant in... More

I took a solo trip to the Prince Albert Olive Fest earlier this year, and overnighted en route in Phillipolis. I booked dinner in advance at Oom Japie's - one of the few places to dine in this tiny town. I was warmly welcomed and installed at the bar with a good red wine while the owner, Richard Proctor Simms... More

Book in advance as meal is made to order. You will be given choice of dishes when you book. Fixed price for starter, main course and dessert. Nice pub with great choice of drinks. You need at least 2 hours from start to finish.e
