Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful views, menu with lots of traditional local fare. Service friendly but a bit slow. We chose this restaurant predominantly because we wanted vegan and vegetarian food, but were disappointed as there was nothing suitable on the menu. They were happy to ‘adapt’ salads by...removing cheese and adding more vegetables, we ordered a side of sauté potatoes to bulk out the salad but they forgot to bring it. Would return but more for the beautiful location rather than the food.More

We arrived without a reservation on a busy night, so were unable to be seated outside as we hoped. However, we were seated inside by the large window that was opened for us. The view was amazing, the breeze great and as we were the...only people inside .. it was peaceful and relaxing. The recommendation for the wine was good. As for the meal, far better than expected- it was most enjoyable. If we ever return to Castelnaud La Chapelle, I would have no hesitation in returning to Les Machicoulis.More

Excellent food of the Périgord region in a stunning location near the castle and above the river Dordogne. Menu du jour and à la carte sampled.

Hidden gem away from mas tourist places. Beautiful view over the Dordogne river, sitting in the shade of the trees. Super friendly staff, en real nice food! Reservation one day in advance is a must. They are hard to reach by phone, and dont have...a online resevation tool (like all dordogne restaurants!!), so you have to stop by in person ;) Really worth it!More

Friendly waitress who speaks English, a menu with variety, from beef to duck to salads, and the best crème caramel I've ever tasted. Tables under the trees are nice, and they moved us inside when it rained. Lovely either way!

Just had a lovely hot goats cheese salad on a shady terrace, overlooking the Dordogne valley. Service excellent with an efficient, friendly and smiling waitress. Definitely worth a visit, best to reserve in high season.

A great place to eat, very welcoming staff, and a beautiful view of the castle. Great value for money. We arrived late and felt very welcomed although the place was full. Good advice on the wine by the patron.

We dined here as a group of nine on 4 occasions in a week as the best recommended and nearest restaurant to where we were staying. The staff were friendly and welcoming and were scrupulous with mask wearing. We had a lovely inside but well...ventilated table with fantastic views of the valley and the hot air balloons. The menu is fairly small but the food was tasty and enjoyable. Only the bavette steak was disappointing as chewy on one occasion. Otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed this place and would recommend the trout starter, the confit of duck, the entrecôte for those with a large appetite and the house pichets of wine too!More

We had a lovely lunch menu (20 euros) that was of great quality. It was a very quiet Tuesday afternoon but probably due to low season. The restaurant has a very nice terrace that overviews the castle. Would definitely recommend!

Nine days into our holiday in France and we were still to find a good restaurant. Disappointing meal after disappointing meal, oh to be in Italy! At Les Machicoulis we found our French gourmet mojo. We all enjoyed our various courses (3 "children" 15,12,10 and...parents). Great views, great food. (Google maps and TripAdvisor has this restaurant misplaced - park at the Castelnaud Chateau car park and walk down the hill to the restaurant).More

Turned up at 7PM on the off-chance that, without a reservation, we might get lucky and were rewarded with a great meal at a "double.take" price. If you want "the" view, book ahead and ask. The set menu was an incredible deal, our waitress friendly...and down-to-earth and the atmosphere everything we like about France away from the tourist hordes. Well worth seeking out.More

Four of us enjoyed dinner last week. €20 set menu of fois gras or goats cheese salad followed by confit duck. Two of us went a la carte and enjoyed smoked trout followed by pork. All had creme brûlée with a vanilla extra flavour which...was exceptional. Carafes of wine were delicious. The setting is very special and the service top notch. Beautiful experience, great value and delicious food. Well done! (The restaurant is up the hill in the village but there is a huge car park).More

We ate here three times during our visit to the Dordogne. A great eatery with well priced and very tasty food, memorable were the duck, trout and kidney mains. Lovely salads and delicious creme brûlée. There is a great view over the river with the...Château in the background. We watched the balloons float past while enjoying our supper.More

We stumbled upon Les Machicoulis when looking for a light lunch away from the more touristy towns along the Dordogne River. Set back a little from the main pedestrian route to the Chateau of Castelnaud, this is a lovely little restaurant with a stunning view...of the valley below. My wife and I had the buffalo mozzarella and the goats cheese salad, both of which were delicious. Washed down with a carafe of wine and a coffee, the bill came to just 32 euros. Highly recommended.More
