Not the restaurant for a cold, quiet day.

The street where the restaurant is situated, is well worth visiting. It really does feel like you’re in Europe. There is though, a strange sense of unreality to the place. Like you’re on a film set or looking at an illusion. After that, Athenia’s atmosphere was something of a let down. It’s a nice restaurant but feels rather bland compared to the street. Also, the plastic screens made the view over the water rather hazy. Yes, they were necessary due to cold weather but they didn’t stop the drafts or help the atmosphere. I’m sure it’s much nicer on warmer days. Service was quick and pleasant and didn’t start with a list of what wasn’t available (of course the dish I wanted). The Kleftiko and Sofrito were tender and flavourful. The Mousaka was okay but completely overwhelmed by cheese and a runny bechamel sauce (a meat eaters answer to every vegetarian dish). One particularly nice aspect was that the staff allowed us to stay as long as we wanted, even through closing. Overall, I feel we had value for money but this is definitely a better restaurant for warmer weather and busy service.

Greek feast

Lovely to try out this restaurant which was new to us and away from the main hussle and bustle of our local Broadbeach area. Great location and recommend sitting outside to enjoy overlooking Emerald Lakes. All enjoyed our food which had great flavours, favorites being garlic prawns and slow cooked lamb on the bone, oh and the haloumi chips were d'lish too! Only let down was the service as was kept waiting some time before getting eye of waitress to be offered menus and place drink orders although restaurant owner made up for it at the end of the evening coming by our table to say hi and ensure we had enjoyed our meals which was a nice touch. Would certainly go back again as many choices on the menu we'd like to try!

Good portion sizes

Three staff working so service a bit slow to start. However this oeuvre to be part of the relaxed atmosphere food lovely and large portion sizes. We couldn’t finish and had to bring some out with us Between four adults we had five alcoholic drinks, four entrees and four mains and found the price to be reasonable ($240).

We met up with a group of friends after seeing good reviews. We were in for a surprise. The meals were fairly pricey for what was offered and we noted the 15% public holiday surcharge in addition to a 10% charge to split the bill. For this privilege of splitting the bill the staff could not be bothered to work out the surcharge for each patron but charged a flat rate such that some were charged a larger proportion of their meal than others. In addition we felt that a dessert was charged that was never ordered or delivered. We believe in supporting our local venues and understand that sourcing food might be difficult. However, we each left feeling taken advantage of and do not feel the restaurant should be rewarded. Atmosphere and service was pleasant but patrons beware of getting ripped off.

Whilst the meals were ok, they were overpriced for what you received, mine was 6 button mushrooms that were basically raw in a spoonful of sauce with two slices of bread, I would think this probably would have cost them about $4 cost me $18, plus a surcharge. We were a group of 12 people and we were aware that there was to be a 15% surcharge for the public holiday, imagine our surprise upon paying to find that each and every one of us got charged $7 surcharge regardless of how much our meal cost. So two items for a total of $22 add $7 for my surcharge, my friend had one meal $30 add $7 for her surcharge. When we queried this we were told that’s what it is and this is the problem with splitting the bill. Even factoring in the card charge which is below .3% in most cases, these guys are making a killing and our whole group left feeling totally ripped off. You live and learn!

Delicious & Authentic Greek Food

What a beautiful spot to have a long lunch with family. The food was beyond amazing and the service was terrific. I definitely recommend the platters so you can try many delicious flavours. Will definitely be back again and again. : )

We had a family dinner here looking across the water. The food was delicious with a good range of dishes and generous servings, and not expensive. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The setting is really lovely and there was easy parking on the street.

Rude, arrogant, owner food was average had better out of a food truck- owner is a bully

Wasn't going to review the terrible experience we had here, I was going to put it down to people having a bad day and leave it at that, It wasn't until I read a post of them being a bully, Thats when I put his attitude toward us as bullying not having a bad hair day. reading other TA reviews others have experienced the same, The owners bullying isn't limited to Staff. Staff nice Owner is a total clown. Customers but also other Businesses. food is rubbish for the price and amount provided, The pizza was nicer from next door, Highly not (R) Not recommended at all.

Beware ! Chaos here. Arrived for our booking of 12 people on Saturday night on time at 6pm to be advised that as we had not reconfirmed the booking, they had cancelled it! No reconfirmation was required at time of booking or required in the website. Staff Advised that they tried to contact us during the week to reconfirm but they had taken the mobile phone number down wrong at time of booking. Spoke to the owner who blamed us for giving the wrong mobile phone number. Clearly their error at time of booking and clearly they had overbooked the restaurant. No accountability from the owner, who despite ruining the night of 12 people didn’t seem to care a bit.

Terrible Service

We booked and when we arrived there were 2 women behind the bar who ignored us. So we asked a passing waitress who showed us to a table outside. Beautiful view. It took several attempts to gain the attention of a waitress to take our orders. I am careful not to order any meals which include chili as I am allergic. When our food arrived I could taste the chili so I complained to the waitress, she said she would check if it had any in the prawns. A very rude man came back and told me I should have told them about my sensitivity. He waved the menu in front of me and refused to apologise or give me another dish. We left as soon as we could as the service was terrible. I would not recommend going here

The owner of Athenia is a very pleasant man. He cooks the best Barramundi on the Gold Coast. It is so fresh, so tasty such generous portion with A huge tasty salad plus sliced boiled potato cooked in a vinaigrette. His staff is also very Efficient and very polite. The setting on the Lake at Emerald Lakes is lovely. MIREILLE & CHRIS

Great food, great location

Do not be put off by negative reviews, try it for yourself! We have been here in previous years while on holiday on the Gold Coast. I was a bit apprehensive coming again after reading some of the reviews but enjoyed it other times so we booked in anyway. Very friendly and attentive staff, even though they were very busy. We ordered calamari for entree, which was so succulent and delicious, then ordered the mixed meat platter to share for mains. As it happened, the waitress returned to say very apologetically they were out of lamb but could substitute more chicken or prawns, so we chose prawns. It was disappointing but so be it, they had run out. A little later an older gentleman (the owner I think) came to our table, apologised again but said he was doing something extra for our platter. When the platter came, it had the most amazingly good moussaka added to it! We had so much food we had to ask for containers to take the leftovers home. Absolutely no complaints from us, only compliments! Athenia is now a permanent fixture on our restaurant list for the Gold Coast ❤️

A little gem

Right on the water front this small Greek restaurant is run by a Persian who knows how to cook Greek food. Staff are friendly and obliging. Menu is not large especially the vegetarian part, but all food is fresh and good.

We’re arrived at the restaurant and asked the attendant a table of 2 even without booking. And fortunately we’re granted a tall table for us. They clean the table and we wait for service, someone ask for for order but yet they didn’t give the menu before, so we wait again for the menu. Someone gave the menu and left again without asking for our order. We wait again and about 15 mins. The manager approached us saying he will take our table seems we have no booking and saying so many people waiting for tables and we are taking so long time without ordering anything. Very unprofessional approach without asking, terrible experienced with that manager. For those who didn’t experience this type of situation, who knows, maybe you should try ?

Great authentic Greek food

First time here & was very impressed. The food was plentiful & delicious. We had the calamari & haloumi chips for entre & then the lamb souvlaki & the chefs chicken special with lemon potatoes. One of the best Greek restaurants we’ve been to for a long time. Service was great. The location is very nice looking out at Emerald Lakes - just a shame the weather wasn’t nice.
