Fabulous Seafood Again In November we dined at 5 Oceanos in Matosinhos. We were once again staying at The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia, so this was a bit of a jaunt - but one well-worth making. On a previous visit to the Porto...Area, a bit over a year before, this restaurant had been recommended by our Concierge, and we were so impressed that we shoe-horned them into this very short trip. Once more, we were rewarded. On the previous visit, I had spent time on the multi-page menu, only to find out that almost nothing on it was being served that night. I learned my lesson. Though presented with the same menu, I knew to do one of two things: ask the server what was available at that moment, or to go and look in the ice-filled display case, in the front of the restaurant, to see for myself. I did both on this visit. Also, as the seafood might well change, due to what is sold, and what is brought in that night, it pays to get one’s order in early, so that the exact item is pulled from the ice, and into the kitchen - the menu might well change by the hour! The restaurant is small, and casual, with both a sidewalk seating area, and then the interior. As it was a bit cool, we opted for inside again. The wine list is short, but filled with some great Portugese wines - many very local to the area. We opted for the Octopus and the Prawns this evening. Another lesson that we had learned is that the Prawns will likely be the size of Lobsters in the USA - “GIANT Prawns” does not do justice to these crustaceans. Both dishes were excellent, and prepared perfectly. For fresh (might have been caught an hour before) seafood, skillfully prepared and served, 5 Oceanos is great, and well-worth the drive from Porto, or Vila Nova de Gaia. Oh, and the service is very friendly, and efficient too.More

We had an excellent meal reasonably priced. The restaurant is honest - we chose the number of grilled langostinos, picked a small fresh sole to share and had wonderful deserts. They charged us for what we drank. Highly recommended and Jose was a wonderful waiter...and very helpfulMore

The food was amazing, however the french steak was terribly underdone. The atmosphere was good and the service was perfect as well

Food is gorgeous, location very refined, personally I did not like the service very much, lack of professionalism, too fast and quick.

I had a most enjoyable meal at 5 Oceanos - my waiter Nuno recommended the garlic clams which was both a large portion and excellent. He then recommended the grouper fillet which had been on display in their display fridge at the entrance. Again very...good. This was washed down with a bottle of the local Sequeira Sauvignon Blance. I finished with a small cheese plate and of course a glass of Ramos Pinto PR10 port! One thing that impressed me was the lobster tank which one could clearly see held locally caught lobsters not the farmed ones.More

After reading the great reviews, I was ready for great seafood. Everything looked very fresh. We shared the clam appetizer that our waiter raved about and found it underseasoned and somewhat chewy. We ordered the huge shrimp and fries which he also remembered. I sent...back the gigantic plate of French fries to have them heated up. I found the shrimp bland and over cooked. So....More

The restaurant was recommended by our hotel. Heard it was one of the better restaurants for local fish. Much of the menu is imported fish and shell fish. We were told the sole and sea bass were were locally caught that day. We ordered a...sole. Unfortunately it’s was rubbery. When we asked our waiter later he told us that certain sole live on the rocks and are rubbery. Sole apparently typically live on sand. Raises questions about the sources of their fish. Maybe we just got unlucky and shame on me for not saying anything sooner.More
