Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I just read the comment of scientist22 who complained about the restaurant's booking rules. First let me say that I've loved Chef Hiro's food since back when he was in Melbourne Central (like maybe 2000-20011) before he started Shira Nui. His food has always, always...been consistently excellent. Still my fav sashimi place in Melbourne after 20 years. Anyone who is a regular knows that it's really hard to get in, bookings are essential and there are 2 sittings lunch and dinner. Obviously scientist22 has never ever been to Shra Nui so not knowing the 2 sittings is excusable. Unfortunately, the description of the conversation given by scientist22 is one sided and more than likely biased and couched in a way (intended or otherwise) to make the reader think poorly of the staff and the chef. How is that fair to them? Never mind that. On many occasions I've tried to book a table only to be told I could get one at either sitting. This happens regular. It's one thing for scientist22 to be unfair to Shira Nui but taking a table over TWO sittings means someone like me can't get a table. Is that fair to me? It's good that you went elsewhere and probably won't even go back to Shira Nui. The rest of us are just saying 'YAH!!' Some might say to scientist22 'Suck it up princess'.More

Shiranui has continued to serve an amazing Omekase over the course of several years. I brought 3 friends for the Omekase experience last month, having shared with them how lovely the meal had been from my last visit 4 years ago. The meal did not...disappoint. All 4 of us enjoyed all 9 pairs of sushi that was presented to us and look forward to our next visit to Melbourne and Shiranui.More

Honestly I was kinda disappointed as I had higher expectations with all the hype of tis eatery for being 1 of the best in Melbourne. Food was fine but not spectacular, staff was attentive but were smothering as they needed to get our group out...the door b4 10pm on a Friday night. And they don’t allow doggy bags. Will I be back again? Nothing about it that makes me want to repeat tis experience as I have had much better.More

The food was good, but not spectacular. The staff are lovely, but when you buy a glass of wine it comes in a mini bottle. I love Japanese food but I can’t understand why this is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne.

Six people for dinner, had teppanyaki. The chef wasn't too over the top and the meal was great. Liked the fresh servings straight from the hot plate. One of the US visitors from LA said it was probably the best Japanese meal he has had.

There is a reason why you need to book ahead, and every seating seems to be full. You know what to expect, and you are never disappointed. I had my usual fish head, and lovely as usual.

Superb lunch, great atmosphere and most importantly very very good food Japanese food. Highly recommended Omikase with quiet chef/kitchen staff who lets their skills shine. One of the best in the Melbourne area and worth the trip for lunch or dinner.

This is a very authentic Japanese restaurant, the chef is meticulous with his nigiri and sashimi. They don't have a huge menu, but this is what we are looking for in a small authentic Japanese restaurant, menu need not to be big. The sushi needed...to be great and they have done a good job. Their service is great, the waiter keep checking on us and all of them with a lovely smile. Though the food is a little on the salty side for Japanese food, but it's not salty as in Chinese food (if you get my idea).More

The master sushi chef Hiro used to be part of the Daimaru restaurants in Melbourne which was closed in 2001 . He opened Shiranui in 2003 and we’ve been dining ever since then for 16 years now . I love the omakase here but you...must sit at the counter to fully enjoy watching the chefs prepare the sushi. They make what is fresh for the day . It’s a 9 course sushi degustation with 2 sushi pieces of each course , hence you eat 18 pieces each . You can order more after that . My ultimate favourite is the oyster grilled mayo sushi which just melts in your mouth . It’s a small restaurant so you must book. It’s also has 2 sessions.More

Was one of my favorites for special occasions and that special Japanese food fix. We went last night. We’re kept waiting at the reception without any acknowledgement, service was polite but perfunctory, food was good but has lost its edge, and is overpriced. Chefs didn’t...make eye contact or interact once. Looks like the restaurant has new owners and lost its vibe. Waited a long time to pay. We will go no longer, shame to cross it off our list of reliable favorites.More

Read reviews and four of had the Omekase. Pleasant greeting and seating, excellent service, the chef was diligent and advised of whether Soy or other was warranted and the food was magnificent. It equally matched a top restaurant in Furano Japan. Would highly recommend.

We came based on recommendations of a few friends. Small establishments with friendly staff and service was really quick. Food quality is very good and everyone loved it. Favorite item of the night was the yakiniku beef where we had 3 servings. Will certainly look...forward to return again for more.More

Excellent food and very good service. The share platters of sushi and sashimi were beautifully presented, with clean fresh flavours and excellent value. We'll certainly return to try more of the menu!
