Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I absolutely love this restaurants philosophy 💙 hats off to the team for doing their very important work to care for our beautiful ocean. Sea urchins are a very serious threat to the health of the ocean. They eat everyhing in their path causing barrens which creates a very unhealthy environment for anything else that lives there. This restaurant targets the invasive species which helps protect the health of the ocean creating a safe place again for the rest of the sea creatures by putting a delicious delicacy on our plates. You can help protect the ocean just by going to eat a delicious meal. I can highly recommend anyone who visits Melbourne to visit this restaurant for a beautiful meal and to learn more about caring for our precious and fragile ocean. The food is amazing and so is the team. Looking forward to visiting again next time I'm in Melbourne. Well done Uni Boom Boom 👌🏽 I would give 10 stars if I could ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ P.S. Uni means Sea Urchin in Japanese and its delicious.

Had an absolutely wonderful time. Food was amazing, staff were very professional. But must say Johnson was out standing. Been a very long time since I’ve seen someone who cares about there job. The owner should be very proud of him.

Very decent Japanese food. Cozy environment, friendly stuff and great food. The food is super fresh and the portion is generous! Must try out the sea urchin, super fresh from the sea.

Delightful. That is the one word to describe the experience of eating and drinking at Uni Boom Boom. I have been reading about this place for quite a while, but it is not conveniently located and the hours it is open are not particularly convenient either (I lived in L.A. for a long time, everything is alway open and its tough getting used to 3 - 5 p.m. closures), but I will go out of my way for quality food, and quality is what I kept hearing about Uni Boom Boom, and I'm so glad I made the effort. Yes, it is completely as described, in an industrial area next to a roll up garage, and yes, they have done a great job of the interior of this cafe - it does have a cafe vibe, but is done well, certainly not over the top on decor. Food and presentation is another thing. I love it when restaurants with unusual dishes offer a tasting plate, and that is what I ordered - it offered a Lychee Edible Nest Drink, which is one of the things I really wanted to try, and it was delicious and cold and served in the most gorgeous little pineapple shaped cup. They also included their foie Gras dish, also superb. Australian Uni, also very good. Braised Abalone which was tasty but more whole than braised and a small salmon sushi bite, which could have had more salmon, and way too much rice, but fabulous taste and texture ! I actually took some salmon sashimi home - the absolute best I have had in Melbourne, and thoughtfully packed with ice. I also tried their uni and salmon cones, which were very good. I also had the Peach Gum tea which was delicious, and what I loved about it was that they asked what level of sugar you wanted added. You could also have it hot or cold and choose how cold. I love drinks extra cold, and this did not disappoint. It was also served in a larger version of the pineapple cup. There is a choice of 3 deserts, all containing the Bird's Nest prosperities. The ice cream was tempting, but I went for the macaroons which also came with the birds nest tea in a clear container, shaped like a bird ! and a spoon that was heart shaped ! just delightful ! Definitely coming back and committing to a full portion of so many other wonderful things offered, especially the sashimi which looked fresh, thick and oh so tasty on a couple of the other tables. Definitely worth the drive and fitting in with their operating hours !

Not cheap, but you can’t really put a price on such a unique dining experience. The Uni (sea urchin) is to die for - little pillows of a creamy, custard texture with a briny, sea foam flavour that fills the senses. I visited with my brother and we shared a large sashimi platter and a Uni don. The platter consisted of a generous serve of first grade Uni, Hokkaido scallops, blue fin tuna and king salmon. The freshness and quality of all was superb. The Uni don was the Premium Uni, served on rice with ‘caviar’, seaweed and condiments. You can taste the difference between the Premium and First Grade Uni, but both were so superior to any I have had before that you could happily settle for the more economical First Grade. Our waiter, Johnson, is from the family that own the operation and was fantastic at explain everything and very helpful with suggestions. Can’t wait to go back to try some of the other things on the menu, and of course for more Uni.
