Very limited pub menu with inflated prices, however we chose to stay as the resturant across the road was closed and no other close options were available ( we try to aviod these situations). The young lady behind the bar was polite and welcoming...unfortunately thats when the good things ended. We ordered small meals as fish and chips or hamburgers... More

Dear Norm, Surely if you left Hungary you were dining somewhere in Eastern Europe and not with us? Seriously however, I'm not so sure Giles Coren and Jay Rayner started their illustrious reviewing careers thumbing through the menus and choosing the cheapest items each time they dined out. Nor, I would suggest, did they discuss the size of their anatomy... More

Love this place - great to kick back and enjoy the splendid view. Great food, upbeat pub style. Pleasant and friendly welcoming staff. Always busy - so pays to book.

Dear Avoca, Thank you so much for your review and it's great to know that you had a consistent experience over two nights. Gluten-free is a breeze, we do Vegan too and that's a lot trickier :). Kind regards, Jeremy Dyer More

Just been here for lunch, with another vegan, and we had the most amazing meals, mine was just exquisite, a selection of different mushroom species done in all sorts of delectable ways, with some amazing sauces, and out of this world flavours. It looked incredible too, but I started eating before I thought to get a photo. I was overcome.... More

Dear Fiona, Isn't our chef awesome? Most chefs we've known run a mile from vegans but Suli has truly embraced you guys and we're very proud to have him heading our kitchen. And yes, we love dogs just don't bring your cat :) Kind regards, Jeremy Dyer More

We had a wonderful lunch at the Governors Bay Hotel today. Great views looking out down the harbour and really good food made it well worth the trip. So nice to see a place with a dedicated vegan menu and lots of choice. The mushrooms 4 ways were divine and the vege stack with rosti and corn cakes were so... More

Dear Yolanda (I think) Thank you, you've been such a great supporter of our vegan options and being at the coalface of this growing market, it is so important that we strive to get it right. Thank you for your confidence vote and we'll endeavour to carry on as we have. See you soon. Kind regards, Jeremy Dyer More

We were a group of seven for dinner, the food was great and the hosts and wait staff very attentive but not overbearing. One of our party was "dairy free" and found the menu was limited but it was straightforward for the rest of us. By chance we were there on a night that the All Blacks played the Wallabies... More

Dear Jill, Indeed dining when the All Blacks are playing can be interesting, we have some very enthusiastic supporters. I'm disappointed we didn't offer your guest our vegan options and if she was carnivorous we would have happily combined. Anyway, thank you for coming and we'd love to host you again. Thank you for your contribution. Kind regards, Jeremy Dyer More

We have visited a few times for lunch as you can often pick up some good deals on Grab One. Food is always good, and the views out towards Lyttelton are amazing. Obviously at this time of year, it's nice to sit outside but having gone in the peak of winter, it would be nice to be given the option... More

Dear hprox, Those grabones deals are great value but play havoc with our food percentages :) Anyway, we'll have a break from them for now until next winter. So glad that you enjoyed your time with us. I will have a word with the staff, I love upselling so thanks for the tip. As a general rule, when we're unsure... More

We were in the last day of our trip to NZ in Christchurch. Our host mentioned that a drive to Lyttelton would be a great experience. Checking for good food reviews, Governors Bay Hotel stood out. The drive took us past picturesque views of bays and residential properties. The hotel itself is beautifully restored from the devastating earthquakes and has... More

Great outdoor area on a warm sunny day. Service was very friendly on a quiet-ish Wednesday lunch. Food was great too, I had the chicken sandwich special with fries 10/10 recommend!! Will definitely be back!

This is a traditional bar, pub, restaurant and hotel which serves nice food and is pleasant enough to hang out for another drink. Or two. You can go there for lunch or dinner, and afternoon coffee. For the latter it has to be said that there is no great choice of cakes. The food I have had there was very... More
