a once in a lifetime experience - a village full of restaurants offering a local speciality (piglet) - and one is better than the other and all culminates into Pedro dos Leitoes. Worth the drive down from Porto, where I was staying

Delicious, always a good surprise. Great local sparkling wine. Nice ambient, friendly staffs. Good price.

We drove 300 km for this roast suckling pig arriving before 12pm opening, getting preferred seating from the manager. The roast suckling piglet has to be the best in the world: skin crispy, meat tender & juicy, said piglet fed with acorns. We ordered 1kg...for 2 so with left-over to be doggy-bagged for our evening meal. Note: when we left at 230pm, there were some 50 at lobby waiting to be seated. Simply put, worth the out-of-way extra driving for the eating; absolutely most satisfying meal if not the best of 2 weeks touring in PortugalMore

It is undoubtable that the suckling pig (and l have tasted a fww in my life) is good. However, what you get for your money is almost obscene. They will reccomend 700 grams for 2 persons. The price per kg is 42€. So far so...good. The problem is that from that 700g, 450 are bone and skin. Do the math. You are paying 15€ for 125g of meat, which in Portugal is basically a rip off. By the way, side dishes are billed on the side. We have also tried a typical portugese dessert "arroz doce", which was below average. I will not come back.More

The leitao is indeed excellent, there's no denying. And the waiters were nice and helpful. The wait though, is something that makes me think twice about going back there. We waited an hour for a table because they had so many clients. I get why,...the food really is fantastic but it's tiresome to wait so long.More

We were lucky to arrive at 13:45 and they had a few tables free. By the time we left there were 100 people waiting... The suckling pig was superb, moist with crisp skin and the special sauce was a perfect match. The two of us...really enjoyed it, as well as the local sparkling wine. The meal came with a salad that was not really interesting, and some superb home made crisps. The reason I give it 4 stars and not five is that if you want to pay with a card, you have to go to the bar through the waiting crowd and it took 20 minutes to pay the bill... Still, a very good restaurant for the special Mealhada suckling pig!More

We travelled all the way from Duoro and were extremely hungry and looking forward to trying the famous dish. The table was reserved 3 weeks in advance. When we first came in there were about 10 people waiting in the lobby, and nobody attended to...us for 5 minutes at least, so we went ahead to the restaurant which was almost empty and there were 2 waiters working and paying no attention to us. We came to one of them, and they finally sat us at tables adjacent to each other in one of the corners of the empty restaurant. It looked like this was more convenient to them to serve us when we are all concentrated in one spot. We then waited for 10 (!) minutes for the English speaking waiter to come, as we obviously wanted some recommendations on wine etc. In those 10 minutes we asked one of the waitresses several times if someone was going to pay attention to us, and she was surprised and pointed to the menu, meaning “everything is written in here”. Finally the only English speaking guy who was VERY frustrated that he had to come to us, finally found some time. We said that we want to be seated in a different place and he was really annoyed. In a restaurant which was only 10% occupied, he didn’t allow us to chose a table... when I expressed my dissatisfaction with the fact that we are being treated this way, he just shrugged his shoulders and went away. Basically this long story is just about the fact that no matter how good the food is (which we didn’t get to try because we went to a different place) - client service means so much! It was the first time in our 2 weeks in Portugal that we were treated this way, and Mealhada was one of the places we were really looking forward to. We then went to Rei dos Leitoes, and were treated not only to a super delicious dinner but also a top-notch service!More

While offering several different meat and fish dishes, this is a restaurant to eat Leitão. Both quality and confection were excellent. Being the oldest of its kind in Mealhada, it has a small interesting exhibition about the history of the establishment. Nonetheless, some improvement on...the seating process would be welcome, since we waited for around 15min with several tables available.More

The restaurant “Pedro dos Leitões” is a place you have to visit and experience a tasteful dinner. The tables are elegantly set and the waiters and waitresses offer top service. You get full attention from employees who are proud of what they do. Ask for...Mrs. Maria Graziela the waitress who took care of us. We ordered the traditional “Pig Roasted à Bairrada” served with homemade potato chips. The starter was a salad and the dessert a delicious lemon cake. The wine was the excellent “M&M Sparkling Brut” from Bairrada. You will love this place.More

A Portuguese Friend brought my Husband and I to this Restaurant on our way to Porto. We had cheese, bread and olives brought to our table. The pig was delicious and moist. We had sparklig rosé to drink which was recommended. The potato chip were...in fact what we know as crisps, but, without the salt or grease. There was a lovely very liquid pepper sauce to pour over the pork. The salad was lettuce, oranges, beets, carrot and onion. I had non sparkling water and an americano but no dessert. My Husband had dessert but it was not homemade.More
