Today 4 of us had brunch at this wonderful cafe. We got a scoopon deal that enabled all 4 of us to have an "All Day Breakfast" plus a hot drink for just $42 for the FOUR OF US! Amazing! The hot choccy was wonderful...and the waffles were amazing. Hubby had the egg and enjoyed it. Loved the setting and the service was fast and friendly. I'd highly recommend it and will be back. We even got to watch a kangaroo grazing as he passed, and 2 kookaburras nearby!More

On a Sunday in early February 2020, this cafe was almost the only one open in the area (Smiths Gully was the other). Covid safe contact tracing check-in was encouraged. We rang a few minutes ahead to book for our group of 10. When we...arrived about 3pm there was plenty of parking out front, and a few empty tables inside. We ordered a variety of teas and coffees, which were delivered fairly quickly. The 3 pots of Earl Grey tea were very, very strong with lots of tea leaves sitting in a deep tea leaf basket inside the teapot. We had to ask for extra (hot) water to dilute it. We didn't eat on this visit, but the food and cakes looked good. Overall - great cafe.More

The scones are enormous - definitely for sharing! Coffee was very smooth (our cycle group comes here for morning coffee occasionally).

I purchased a scoopon voucher for this place late last year and forgot about it, when I rang to book we could only get in after the voucher expired but they promised to honour it which they did 👍🏿. We had the Antipasto plate for...two with two glasses of wine, it was excellent and had at least three cheeses with the ash cheese being excellent. The platter was huge and would easily of paid full price for it and felt satisfied. Highly recommend this place. Oh and the homemade hummus was probably the best hummus I’ve ever had.More

My partner and I visited the Dark Horse on a Sunday afternoon at a time they were had a full house due to a promotion they were running. As a result, we waited 15 minutes before getting a drink and had to go to the...counter for top ups. They were fully run off their feet, but extremely courteous under pressure. The wait staff were rather bumbling due to the pace, and the floor was covered in crushed breadsticks that had fallen off the antipasta platters that were flying out thick and fast. This was an indication, however, of how generous the servings were, with platters piled high - no skimping on produce here! Nice to see local wines/produce on the menu. I didn't have the hot chips, but had "other-table envy" as I watched them come out - they looked the perfect size and were golden (you know the ones that are crispy on the outside but butter soft inside? They looked like that). The building itself is rather underwhelming, but if you get a table with a view out the back, the view is a beautiful example of rustic outer-east. Due to the lack of soft furnishings and full-house, it was a bit on the noisy side - but I've experienced worse. If you're looking for a nice casual catch up at a reasonable price, I highly recommend.More

Four of us had a Sunday lunch at the Dark Horse Cafe. We had a Scoopon voucher for four which included two platters and a glass of wine, beer or soft drink. We chose two Gourmet Antipasto Grazing Platters for 2. Busy when we arrived,...but service was reasonably quick. Two platters arrived, one each to be shared by each couple. Towards the end, a comment was passed, where are the other two cheeses? The only cheese on both platters was a small portion of the Ashed goats cheese. No semi-hard cows cheese and no Gouda. Not an oversight, both platters only had the one cheese, the Ashed goats cheese. There was a guy playing a guitar in a very narrow part of the cafe. Only the two nearest tables close to him would hear what he is singing because of the chatter nearby. Pity the penny pinching, a reason for us not to have a return visit.More

On our way through to Sugarloaf Reservoir, we stopped for an ale and a wine then added some hot chips to line the belly. Never can be too careful with alcohol and driving these days. Dark Horse has reincarnated an old establishment into a must...visit place for the country culinary diner. The lovely drive from the east out through the long, leisurely gentle windy roads to this ‘one off’ cafe/store starts when you enter and greeted by the staff. They’ve been trained well or perhaps recruited well. Friendly, helpful and nothing too much trouble. We decided to sit up at a barrel on stools as we knew we’d only be an hour however, there is a variety of places to eat within Dark Horse. Indoors, outdoors, covered, uncovered, on large dining tables for 10 or at a couple of comfy couches indoors. Menu is simple but interesting and there is something for everyone including the kids. As well as somewhere to eat and drink, Dark Horse has an array of local produce for sale and I’d recommend you check out what’s on offer. The wine selection on display is certainly worth a look. This place reminded me of Merricks Cafe on the Mornington Peninsula - without the expensive price tag and snobbery. There also was a lovely young woman playing live music for patrons - good sound and not intrusive on our conversation. Note: wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Good parking. Network on Telstra was 1 bar and no bars for Optus however, you can ask for the wifi password.More

I have been here for coffee with friends after a walk. The service is very slow. The coffee was good. There were complaints about the cost - especially of milkshakes. The food is very good.
