A fun and different experience

This restaurant has an attractive ambiance, and the service is good. We had a reservation, and while it was not busy when we arrived at 6:30, it was nearly full by 8pm. We ordered the lamb shoulder to share between two, together with the spinach and greens, and it was plenty....with another side, it could have satisfied three. The other two of us chose from the stone cooked offerings - the lamb and the seafood. We were all pleased with these dishes, and while the novelty was a fun factor, the quality and taste were there too. The desserts fell a little short. The cheesecake was gelled in consistency with no crust, so unconventional, to say the least. The creme brûlée was decent but did not shine. The chocolate brownies were a generous portion, and enjoyed. We had local wines by the glass, and they were good

An interesting way to eat

An interesting way to have a meal - we both had the stone grill option. I had the lamb my wife had the seafood skewers. Food is brought on the sizzling stone and you the cook it to your liking. Not something we’d tried before but glad we have done now. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Wine was good.

Still the same excellent food and high standards

We've visisted a few times since my first review in 2016 and WGK never disappoints. They care about more than just the food and so the service and interaction and knowledge of their wait-staff is every bit as top-notch as the food is. We've loved our meals, and always left wondering what all the other meals on other tables taste like! For a bit of theatre, pick the Hot Stone Grill. I thought that as you're 'cooking it yourself' it would be good, but not special! I was wrong. Whether it's the cuts, or anything they do to the meat first, or just how it all works together, the Stone Grill is exceptionally flavourful as well as being an engaging and entertaining way to eat!

Not a lot of food for a lot of money

Visited tonight, just Ok. some pretty average food. Had the cod, the seafood skewer and tagine. Cod was cooked pretty well but for 40 dollars would expect to be full at the end of the meal. Tagine pretty bland and the seafood skewer nothing to write home about.

Superb dining experience - next level steak!!

We had such a great experience at WGK. It was a treat to be able to get amazingly delicious and well presented food in a place that also caters for children (which is hard to find). The host on arrival was friendly, warm and welcoming. The wait staff were all freindly and super efficient and went out of there way for our kids. The children were provided with colouring items when seated to keep them entertained and the menu options for them were healthy and delicious (not just the regular fried food which is so common at many restaurants catering for kids). Our adult entrees were delicious and very generous (I had the pork belly - amazing). We both ordered steak for dinner and it was exquisite. It was a high quality steak with a beautiful flavour. My husband and I refused to order steak anywhere else on our trip as we knew it couldnt live up to the standard of the WGK one we ate. (my mouth waters as i type) The wine and beer selection was also great. The restaurant is small and cosy but vibrant when full. I would recommend booking in as you wont want to miss this treat. Also bathrooms were modern and very clean (oh so very important). Would i dine there again - absolutely yes.

Only meats, skip the rest

Lamb was very good and huge portion. Tangerin with chickpeas - not only very ecpensive but very sweet and not eatable. Mussels - small portion for the smoubt of money paid and only so so. Very testy chowder but practicaly „empty” - hard to find some fish of seafood. If it was not a lamb it would be dissapointing and very expensive

Excellent dinner!

We had such a nice experience at the restaurant. The staff was so friendly. The server offered many suggestions and the food did not disappoint. We shared the haloumi and the prawn cutlets. Both had excellent flavours and nice sized portions. We then shared the blue cod with a side of root veggies. Outstanding. My partner wanted to come back the next day but unfortunately, they close on Mondays.

Just terrible food

Wife and I visited for tea on advice from others. If Wanaka people think this place has great food they haven't eaten at many places around nz. The best part were the waitresses. There was no love about the food from the presentation of the mussels; just thrown on a plate to the overcooked cod. Second rate food doesn't do it for us.

Great Dinner Date

Honeymoon trip and my wife and I split the lamb shoulder (served) and we did the eye filet steak on the hot rock. it was an amazing meal and a great experience. We ended up taking home a small portion of the lamb shoulder but it really wasn't THAT much food if you are big eaters (which we are). Our sides were the roots and spinach salad, both of which were really good and small. We got a bottle of the pinot noir reserve which was an upgrade from the house. We typically get full-bodied reds from southern california so the pinot is a change of pace but it went well with our meal and we both enjoyed it. Dessert was bread pudding with ice cream. We got a decaf cappuccino and I ordered a shot of baileys to complement it all. Fantastic dessert experience! We have enjoyed the beers and local spots for food but this was a really nice restaurant to get a somewhat fancy meal for our special occasion.

Small steaks, rude proprietor and kicked out before desert

So, it goes like this. After a hard days skiing, i decided i needed to build the protein level of my family and I. So we booked a table at the Tititea steakhouse. We had high expectations. Unfortunately, when we turned up, we were ignored by all staff members. Thoroughly ignored. We then asked the nice chap behind the bar, and a lady came out and told him to ignore us as "we were not a priority". Eventually, the lady came over to us and sat us down. The food was some considerable time coming, and when it came it was more like a fat slab than prime steak. I called our waiter over, and he took it away. We then had to wait another 20 minutes before the steaks came back. More meat, bur burned. Well, we had been in the restaurant a good 150 minutes by the time the waitress came over to ask for our desert order.

Worst service in Wanaka!

We visited this restaurant this evening , mistake was thinking this would be a nice steakhouse …. More like a over crowded pub , incredibly loud groups . And poorly trained waitstaff , our wine/ beer were not in the slightest cold and when asked staff for simply a cold one We were met with utter rudeness , and snide remarks When paying the bill . As a returning kiwi i would not recommend this restaurant and you would be better served at any local pub!!! That serves anything cold.

Hi, your white wine was 5 degrees which is the recommended temperature, (and is even recon between 7-12 degrees) it was checked after you rudely asked your server for another one “but make sure it’s cold this time”. You also abused the waitress taking your payment telling her that if you’re in hospitality you should learn to put up with abuse, this may be normal for you after living in Australia but our staff don’t have to be abused. I didn’t see you smile or even try to interact or have a good time the whole night from the moment you walked in the door, I even over heard other tables comment on it when you left, maybe you were just having a really bad day!

Great food, Cheeky service

After eyeing up this restaurant for the past few days during my working trip to wanaka I finally decided to go in and treat myself to a great meal from what I could see on their website. I walked in off the street at around 6.30 with no booking and they were kind enough to find me a seat for myself which I very much appreciated. Service was quick friendly and effecient when I had been seated and my order was taken almost instantly. I had an entree, main and a drink. I was offered water and my drink came very quickly shortly followed by my entree. My entree was the bread with dips which the truffle mascarpone was great. For the main I got myself the wakanui eye fillet with the duckfat potato's both were brilliant with outstanding flavours, exactly what I would expect from this sort of place. The service was good during the meal with the waitress checking up on me occasionally to ensure I was happy with my food. I completed my meal and got up and paid and was very happy. Upon leaving the restaurant I had a look at the receipt and this is where the only disappointing part of my night was realised. When taking my order I had a clear idea of what I wanted which was the entree, main and a drink. I have now noticed they when the waitress had taken my order and I requested my main she asked me what side I would like, this threw me off at first because I was sure it was just the steak but on the spot she pointed out the sides which I quickly decided on the duck fat potato's. I have now come to realise this was not actually part of my main but an extra I had paid additionally for. Now you could say this is my fault for not questioning but in that case why was I not asked which desert I would like? This seems like an easy way to trick someone into ordering something they may have believed to be apart of the meal as if she had asked which desert I would like I would have clicked this was not part of the meal but additional. Overall the food was great and I was very happy with my experience until I left and realised what had happened. I would have definitely recommended this place or even visited in the future while on other work trips but now I feel tricked and disheartened. I understand the concept of doing this but make it clear that this would be additional. It's not even the extra cost as this can be put down to a work expense but more the feeling of being tricked. If the side not being part of the main was made clear this would have been a 5 star for me as everything else in was great but now I feel a fool for treating myself and have a rather disappointed feeling so for that reason I can only give it a 3.

I’m sorry you feel tricked this is definitely not the intention, our menu clearly states sides and the price for them and it also clearly states what is included on your steak. I’m 99% sure your waitress may have asked if you wanted to top your steak with mushrooms, prawns or onions too which our menu clearly states the prices of. I’m sorry you would think extra veges are free, it is the waitress’s job to see if you’d like chips, veges or potatoes with your steak as only a very small minority of people don’t get sides and most people would be annoyed to not be reminded to order them.

Disappointed

Went here for a birthday celebration with a group of extended family. We chose a couple of entrees to share and they were delicious. Two of our party were disappointed by the steaks; one person requested medium rare and was served medium. Another person ordered medium and his was noticeably rare. Unfortunately both people had started eating. We think the mix up was due to being served by multiple staff, one taking orders and another delivering orders. I found the cost of a meal overpriced when taking into account the price of a steak and then paying extra for vegetables on top. I am from out of town and I’m not used to this. Personally I wouldn’t return.

So sorry that there was a mix up with your steaks, we do use seat numbers and verbally check so maybe someone moved seats to get the wrong steak. You’ll find all steak houses charge separately for sides in NZ and globally as it’s clearly stated on the menu and website 😊

Superb Restaurant

Would totally recommend WGK for a special meal out. We chose it for our wedding anniversary and it exceeded our expectations. The slow cooked lamb with roast veg and mashed potato was probably the best I’ve ever had. The staff were all friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. We would not hesitate to go there again.

Yummy sides - lukewarm steak

Went for dinner with 3 work colleagues, the initial service was very good, cosy atmosphere. We all ordered the eye fillet and sides for the table (seasonal greens, Brussell sprouts, fries and yams). All the sides were cooked well and very tasty. All of our steaks were barely warm, it seems they had been left to rest for quite some time. We asked for all to be cooked medium rare, they were all undercooked - one especially was blue-rare in the middle. When they came to clear our plates, I informed the server that the steak was underdone so much so that it was less than half eaten. She said she would speak to the chef. No apology was given, we weren't offered a discount or for the steak to be cooked more. Upon paying we asked politely if there could be a wee discount given seeing as the steak could not be eaten and the woman on the till was quite rude stating we should have told the chef to recook it for us. Again, no apology. This was quite disappointing - to spend $45 on just a steak, at a steakhouse, i would have assumed it would be cooked correctly to begin with, an apology given and them to try rectifying the issue. Poor service and don't appreciate the rude staff member at the till, especially when we were being polite and letting you know the issue so future customers would have the best visit.
