Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Speights ale house always delivers to a high standard. What makes this one stand out is the top service. The food was excellent and the happy hour is a really nice local initiative. A popular choice for locals and delivers value for money.

Having had a delicious salmon at Speights Ale House in Dunedin, we came to this one in Wanaka. We again had salmon. The salmon was nicely cooked, the new potatoes were nice but that's where it stopped. The mesclun salad was drowning in oil dressing...making the salad limp and oily rather than fresh and crispy - less is better. Rather than a nice light aioli to accompany the salmon, there was a serve of some sort of herbed butter, luckily served in a separate container on the side. It was not agreeable to my palate. The order of a side of steamed vegetables were also too greasy and not light and freshly steamed.More

When paying $40 for pork belly, you’d expect the top to be crispy crackling rite? Or atleast some crackle added on top . Instead the fat was just that . FAT . And sloppy . Lazy chef in my opinion . It was not busy...at all keeping in mind. It was my first time being in wanaka and that ruined the first day for me. Service was great though .More

We love a meal in a Speights ale house but found the menu in this one not quite to our taste. We still had very enjoyable food. Despite being crowded in the bar section it was relatively quiet in the dining section. The service was...great.More

One night in Wanaka and we were recommended to got to Speights Ale House. Started with an amazing Vanillacello cocktail. This was pretty delicious. My husband ordered bangers and mash with gravy which was tasty and I ordered carbonara with mushrooms. When asked if I...could add chicken, the waitress said “the chef doesn’t like us adding chicken to the carbonara ! “ “I could order a piece of grilled chicken and add it myself”…..ok then. Lucky this dish had the mushrooms, and I could add the dry piece of grilled chicken, other wise I would have left it all. Even with salt and pepper added , it was tasteless. The pasta was way too big for a meal with no meat and barely any liquid. Beers good but took quite a while. I think they forgot our drinks order until we checked on them. Bit disappointing.More

Staff were exceptionally friendly and engaging. Food was amazing - we all had very different meals (salmon, steak, burger and Parma). Didn’t book for Sunday evening and got a table quickly.

A lively restaurant with a fairly simple menu but everything we had was well cooked and tasty. Portions good size. Serving staff friendly and helpful. Value for money. Plenty of parking nearby.

The service was poor even though there was heaps of staff, who seemed to be walking around aimlessly. The menu was very limited with a number of items crossed out with a black marker. The food tasted ok, but the fish portions were poor and...expensive for what was presented. We were never asked "how our meals were" or if we wanted another drink or if we wanted to see the dessert. As a local we would expect more and would not recommend dinning at this restaurant.More

As we wandered along the shores of the Wanaka Lake on a Friday evening, it came with little surprise that most restaurants were bursting with patrons waiting to be seated with waiting times pushing beyond an hour. Though the situation at The Speight’s was no...different, we were thankful we managed to find a table after about half an hour. Given we had wandered into a pub, we decided to stick to traditional comfort pub food. We started with a Bangers and mash (NZD 28) which arrived with 3 juicy pork sausages rested on a bed of mashed potatoes and as side of refreshing smashed mint peas. The dish was completed with a generous amount of brown onion gravy. Complementing the mains, we ordered a side of crunchy battered onion rings (NZD 8) and Fries (NZD 5) both fried to a lovely golden brown and arrived piping hot. Last but not least, we ordered a steaming hot Potato & leek soup (NZD 13) which was thick and rich in flavour served with a crusty slice of bread for us to dip into the soup. Perfect on a chilly winter’s day. Not only was it a very fulfilling meal which filled out tummies, it was an extremely delicious meal and we will definitely be back hungry for more. Good New Zealand pub with good beer wine and food. Excellent value for money. First night husband had Lamb Fry, I had Beef Pasta. Both served promptly on hot plates, always a good sign and both tasty and filling. 2nd night I had the Lamb...Fry and husband had fish & chips. I really enjoyed mine but husband found the batter a little heavy. Beers and wine Excellent too xMore
