This place came highly recommended. The food is very good, but pricier than expected for an izakaya. The sashimi was fresh and I really enjoyed what was selected for us. The yellowtail tartare is a truly special dish. Call ahead for a reservation since it's on the smaller side. About a 10-15 minute uber ride from Waikiki.

The best dish here tasted like cat food. Most of it was dog food. Several of the dishes had no taste, which greatly benefited the dinner. The crabcake was fishy and unappealing. The hamachi tare tare was odd flavored. The tnt dynamite had poor textured seafood swimmimg in mayonaisse water. The simplest dish of shrimp tempura was frozen shrimp and... More

Perfect Japanese Izakaya experience at reasonable price, and a clear dining highlight after island hopping Hawaii for three weeks.

"Only one ring to rule them all...". Izakaya Gaku is still THE Japanese Izakaya in Honolulu. On point cuisine, the best ingredients, engaged sincere service in a small intimate atmosphere. $50+ a head but what are you waiting for? Start chanting... toro, toro, toro...

This is as close as it can be to an authentic Japanese Izakaya restaurant. This is "genuine" Japanese food. Most of the customers are local. Furthermore, all the staff is Japanese which gives you a pretty good idea about "authenticity". The food is simply superb, and the raw fish (sashimi) is as fresh as it could be. The variety of... I made reservations a month in advance to make sure we could get in to celebrate my son's birthday. Everything was so fresh and delicious. We ordered the large sashimi platter, which had a variety of 9 seafood specialities like ama-ebi (sweet shrimp), moi, maguro. Sushi platter A (which had a fabulous ikura nigiri flavored with dashi, delicious), a few... More

One of the chefs used to work in Ohio and I had to go there when I went to Honolulu since his restaurant was the best in town. The foods exceeded my expectations and we really enjoyed the foods and hospitality. Even we had to use taxi from Waikiki beach, it was worth the drive. It is a kind of... More

Never judge a book by it's cover! The outside doesn't look like much and 9 out of 10 people would simply just walk by. However this hidden gem has the best sushi you will ever taste. The staff is friendly and the meals are prepped in front of your eyes which gives you first glance at the craftsmenship that is put... This Izakaya has Happy Hour specials and a varied menu. Our favorites include the assortments of tofu-- . On this occasion, they were out. Instead we had the chicken and mushroom rice, cooked in a clay pot and mixed with a raw egg. Amaebi and ikura nigiri sushi, a large platter of sashimi, with four or five different kinds of... More
