Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wines by the glass reasonably priced. Roast pork whilst more a slow braised hock but was juicy and quite tender and not drenched in too much gravy. The apple sauce very tasty (tasted almost like sweet savoury caramelised apples) accompanied by potatoes, carrots, pumpkin and...broccoli. Not too fatty and juicy so I enjoyed the pork as I know how hard it is to produce a good pork dish with reheating. Quaint historic building with a bit of history apparently belonging to the granddaughter of the infamous Alice May Patterson. Staff professional and friendly.More

Delightful place with history, loved my sou and roll. Areas for kids to 'hang out' under watchful eyes of parents, cosy chairs for people wanting a cuppa.

Delicious food, I had Ribs and my friend Sausage and Mash. Our favourite meal so far in our trip through New Zealand. Greeted by friendly staff and seated quickly with water in the table and got served very promptly. Food came out quickly and couldn’t...fault it. The added back story of Alice May adds a lovely touch to the experience - would highly recommendMore

Alice May is a restaurant with a story to go along with atmosphere, good service and creative food. A fun stop and interlude on our way down the South Island visiting glaciers and Fjords. Stop for a great meal and also check out the story...and memorabilia.More

The food and service were impeccable. The grilled salmon melted in my mouth, sitting on a bed of tender and flavorful pea risotto and asparagus. The pork shank’s meat fell off of the bone with mashed pumpkin potatoes that were creamy and sweet annd tender...roasted seasonal vegetables. Eating in their outdoor garden had views of the snow capped mountains. We have had travelled and eaten cuisine from all over the world and Chef Andy’s meal was the best we have ever had.More

We had the choice among several restaurants in Franz Josef. All offered the same type dishes, at the same price. We choose Alice May, as their website advertised a 20% discount for dinner taken between 4:30 PM and 6:00PM. I ordered Lamb, without gravy. The...plate was served with a heavy gravy topped over the meat. I accepted it, although the taste of the meat was altered. The bill did not take in account of the 20 % discount. The waitress offered 5%, then 10 % or free ice cream. ( the dessert I ordered). That's a pitty. The evening could have been enjoyable. Why being honest, if you can get away being dishonest ?More

Amazing food, absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The menu had variety, some food options were casual and others sophisticated. The beef cheeks and fudge cake were incredible! The service was good, friendly and responsive. We went back the next day! HIGHLY recommend this special Franz...Josef Glacier. Be sure to go early.More

We ducked in after a long day touring and were happy to get a table outside. The fresh air and views of mountains early evening was a great setting. It looked nice inside too if that were a preference. It was full with a wait...by the time we left so plan accordingly. The 4 of us all had different meals and shared a bottle of wine. I had a spicy seafood pasta dish and it was the best meal of my many over weeks in NZ! Everything was just right with ingredients and preparation… the flavor was the best. Everyone enjoyed their selections. Prices were very reasonable as well. When we ran into others from our tour group who are there as well they shared similar impressions and raved about the same pasta dish in particular! In terms of service it was the first place we ate that had a call button on the table for when you were ready to order or needed something. The server arrived quickly and we were ready for them. How efficient for all?!More

Nice atmosphere, good food, good service , thank you. We sat outside as inside was full. Which turned out to be ok. Unfortunately they don't take bookings which is a shame.

Such a delight to find somewhere with traditional New Zealand food. The meals were superb and generous. I had the venison bangers and mash which was so delicious. I will definitely return.

Thought this would be a great place for dinner going by reviews. Well not so good for me and my wife. I had beef cheeks with mash potato and seasonal vegetables. The vegetables were still near raw, carrots peas and broccoli. Asked if the meal...was OK by young girl from the bar and I said the beef cheeks were well over cooked and vegetables near raw. Her reply was, I can get you some more gravy if you'd like. How is some gravy going to cook the vegetables or take the over cooked out of the beef cheeks? Wife had rib eye steak and chips and seasonal vegetables.yep near raw vegetables with a big serving of under cooked broccoli. Maybe the chef had a bad day? But when you pay $100 for two meals, I really expect a better measl than what we were served. In town for another night so might have to try another place to eat.More
