Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

There is justified happiness as the Central Grocery finally opened again on December 14! We recently had two take-out half-muffulettas (on different days) from there and they seemed as good as in the old days. They were nicely stocked with the meats and cheeses and the wonderful olive salad. They were available around town while the CG was closed, but there is something about entering the old store and buying them on the site that makes them taste a little better. The store has the same old sign outside, but has been remodeled inside. Sadly, it now lacks the barrels of bacalao that provided the olfactory background in the old days. It also seems to have fewer interesting jars and cans of Italian food items. But the home of the muffuletta is definitely back!

I agree with the previous reviews that the guy at liquor store seems frustrated selling these. I could hear him yelling from outside the store that if you wanted a muffaleta he had them behind the counter. So I actually knew right where to go. The sandwich itself was great. Had one many years ago when then market was open. They are currently $27 for the whole size which we split between the 4 of us. They are $30 at airport and they were out when we stopped by.

When you come to New Orleans, you HAVE to get a muffuletta, and you have to get it at Central Grocery & Deli. Unfortunately for our visit, the store itself was closed due to construction (it's just temporary), BUT you can pick up a muffuletta next door at Sidney’s Wine Cellar.
Just so you know, this sandwich is $28 but it feeds at least four, maybe even 5-6. It’s a hefty amount of food so you will definitely need to share. We bought two more and brought it home.
Would definitely come back again!

I barely walked into Sidney's before the rudeness began. Clearly the guys at Sidney's do not want to sell the muffuletta. So why do they do it then? I missed the sign at the front of the store and looked for the muffuletta in the refrigerated section like they are at Moisant Market at the airport. I was asked what was I looking for -- but minus any Southern hospitality. Perhaps there was a smidgen of reason to be rude to me because I didn't see the sign, but then a pair of ladies came into the store and didn't get two steps in before getting the same attitude. So, it doesn't matter who you are just wanting a muffuletta at Sidney's is a problem apparently. If you're flying into New Orleans, the muffuletta is slightly more expensive to buy at Moisant Market at the airport but the price difference is worth paying for better customer service.

The first thing I noticed was the less than pleasant smell when we entered. We ordered the renowned sandwich, which was pre-made and not warmed for serving 😐. The olive tampenade was much stronger, and the bread more dense than expected. Won't go back.

I dont get what the fuss is about for the Muffuletta. Its not horrible, its just nothing special. Probably one of the most boring things I had while in the US. I've had something similar from a basic small sandwich shop you get around train stations in Central London, and its similar to what you get in tourist traps in Italy. Didn't get any of the reported attitude from workers in the shop that is selling it while Central Grocery is being renovated, but did notice a slight cavalier attitude.

We used to go to New Orleans on family vacations and I remember going in here when I was 7 years old ... over 50 years ago now! These days I'm in New Orleans a couple of times a year and I always make time to go get a Muffuletta. Obviously the original is the best ... but you gotta LOVE olives and Italian spices. The pickled olives and other pickled veggies may be too intense for the kids. I always get one to go and take it across the street to the river front and enjoy the sandwich and the view. Try to go on a weekday because on weekends or during festivals you'll wait in a long line.

I rarely give excellent ratings as opposed to many inflated reviewers. The standard for all restaurants should be "very good." Anyhow, I am a man who loves big sandwiches. This fit the bill. I bought a half sandwich for about $11 bucks and it filled me., and I can eat large portions. Perfect balance of meat, bread, and the olive topping that makes the sandwich unique. You can get it to go and sit in the nearby Jackson park on a bench and eat your sandwich. Service was quick as they pre-make sandwiches around the lunch hour, but the pre-made status does not detract from the taste. There was a lot of other specialty foods in the market and I should have bought a jar of the olive topping.

Central Grocery is still closed, but you can get the historic Muffuletta's from Sidney's Wine Cellar at 917 Decatur.
We tried many sandwiches when in town and Central Grocery WINS!
They indeed earn the title of Best Muffuletta!

If you want lunch, go for muffaletta at Central Grocery but, for dessert or a sweet treat, beneits and cafe au lait (or hot chocolate) cafe dumond can't be beat .
If you're having a sweet tooth craving, pecan pralines come one at a time or boxes of a dozen or more and carry on planes much better than other local favorites. This is a plus not instead of the other two items being reviewed.
NOLA has great food in any category.

This has been positively reviewed by many.
My review is in agreement with the positive ones. As many note, the thing is huge. Should you look at it and realize you over ordered, instead of taking it back to your hotel fridge and forgetting it there when you leave town, consider being careful with the remaining half, wrap it back up and donate it to one of the many around the wharf and Jefferson Square who could use the nourishment.
Next meal, go try something new and delicious! Cheers

During our recent week in NOLA, I had a couple of po boys and they were good but not in the same league with the muffuletta I got from Central Grocery. I really didn't know what I was ordering and the woman behind the counter (who made me feel very welcome) suggested a half sandwich. I took the sandwich to Jackson Square and sat on a bench in perfect weather. Half of a half was more than enough and I had the other half of a half the next day. This was the best sandwich I have ever eaten; better than any po boy, hoagie, or sub.

The world-famous Muffuletta was decent but expensive. My family members do not like olives, so I requested the olive salad on the side (they were happy to do so). The smell of the grocery/deli was so incredibly strong (olive) that everyone had a negative opinion before we started. We bought the full-round with extra meat (there is a special name for this). I think it was $30 for the sandwich. It tasted like a slightly better version of a subway sandwich. It was worth a try as a Midwesterner, because when you’re in New Orleans you have to try all the local foods. Of all the native foods we had, this was probably my least favorite.

We heard about the awesome muffuletta sandwiches so we, with friends, ordered them on 'the net'. They arrived at our home (in Ocala, FL) the day after the order was processed. Our sandwiches were in an insulated bag with blocks of black ice that kept the sandwiches cold and fresh. The sandwiches have a positive reputation that is well dissevered. Per the present owner...the recipe is 100 years old that was (is) a recipe of his grandfathers. Wow...yummy.

When we visited New Orleans during the pandemic, naturally many places were closed or didn't resemble what we had come to expect. We were so excited to find Central Grocery open at lunch time! There was even a small indoor eating area available which allowed us to eat in air conditioned comfort. The store is very clean, we felt completely safe. Staff were so friendly. We shared a Muffaletta sandwich and it was fresh and delicious, highly recommend. The sandwich was really large, enough to feed several people. The place is worth walking into just for the smell--reminded me of the stores I knew growing up in Europe.

French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.
