Just got back from a week in NY. This was the only place we visited we had a problem with. The problem is, to be blunt, the staff, or at least the two we had contact with.
We arrived just before mid-day on a steaming...hot NY day. The restaurant was quiet - four tables were occupied outside, the rest empty. Inside was empty also. Only one table was laid so we asked the lady collecting places if we could sit there. She reacted quite angrily that no, we couldn't just sit there, we had to wait for the 'host'. Wasn't quite sure what we had done to upset her but we waited for the elusive host, still stood in the blazing sun. No sign of him. Looked inside, still no sign of him. Waited a bit longer. Finally he appeared. Again, asked politely if we could sit down. He took barely any notice and told us to wait. Note there was no one else waiting, inside or outside. His job I assume was simply to seat people and be polite. He seemed to be just walking around, not actually doing anything. So we waited, again, in the 30 degree heat.
Finally he came out again. Ignored us, again. At this point I must admit I was getting a little frustrated. I asked again if we could sit down and his reply was just plain rude - telling us he expected us to show 'a little patience' in a sarcastic tone. As we had been waiting several minutes in mid-day heat when there were numerous empty tables and no one else waiting, I thought we had already shown exemplary patience. At this point we gave up and went someone else - Sarabeths in Union Square - where staff are polite.
I don't understand why a restaurant would have such rude cold staff at front of house. We have not had this problem anywhere else. It is a small thing to be polite. Needless to say, we wont be going again.More
