On a recent business trip to this area of California I stopped in to El Rey Cantina for an early dinner. I was impressed by the friendliness of everyone who worked at El Rey and the quality of the food. No one tried to "up sell" me on food that I could not eat or want but made great recommendations... El Rey is a great place to stop for a quick bite and drink. It is a Mexican cantina but it exudes Ventura local-ism. It is small and hard to get a seat when it is busy. If it is slow, it is a wonderful place to go and relax.

If your into the downtown, local bar scene then this is the place for you. Standing room only on the weekends and a decent crowd during the week. Youngish, energetic crowd and plenty of action. If a quiet dinner is what you have in mind then come on a weekday night or sit outside on the weekends because this place... More

I was in here the 2nd day they were open. very annoyed with the crowd it drew. Also they put a bunch of bras on the fan inside, kinda stupid, a little degrading to women. A friend dragged me in the recently and the only thing that changed was there was dust on the bras. This place sucks.

I had been shopping downtown for a few hours and my arms were tired from carrying heavy bags so I stopped in to get a drink. The staff was all really friendly I ended up ordering food which was delicious. And the place was clean including the restrooms.

Just average Mexican food...the guacamole was bland but the salsa was seasoned pretty well. We both had chicken and cheese enchiladas and thought that they were just OK. My friend loved the margaritas and I had an ample sized vodka.

This place feels like it is right out of a Tarentino movie ... such atmosphere. Stick with the amazing tacos and margaritas and you can't go wrong. A great place to hang out in the middle of the day and hide from the world ;-)

Busiest place on the block and for good reason. Great happy hour with $1 tacos and half price on select beer and wine. Food was awesome, staff was extremely attentive and friendly, and the price was a superb value. Definitely recommend this place to anyone passing through Ventura!

Great little bar with good margaritas and tacos. Nothing fancy and hit or miss service yet food is generally good and tasty. Drink and chips are perfect here.
