The very friendly owner made sure that we enjoyed our evening in every way. Great selection of food and desserts, and specials. Plenty of space between the tables, and not the typical noisy restaurant experience very common in NY. Well worth a visit.

A French restaurant with a French owner, a French chef who worked in 1 or 2 star Michelin restaurant, wait staff that speaks French and excellent French food. Prices are "reasonable" considering the quality, preparation and being in NYC with most entrees in the mid to upper $20's. Restaurant probably holds 30 dinners at full capacity. Menu spans the spectrum... More

Great little neighborhood French spot perfect if you're popping in from around the corner but also worth a trip across town. Solid traditional French fare in a family owned and operated place where the pride of ownership shines through in all respects.

La Ripaille has been around for more than 3 decades and deserves its longevity for preparing authentically French food in a quaint and inviting atmosphere. I was there on a nasty, snowy evening made perfect with Edith Piaff and Charles Aznavour serenading me in this intimate space with an exquisite magret of duck and endive salad before me. It doesn't... More

We were looking for a restaurant for Christmas Day dinner, having spent last Christmas with our daughter in Paris where she was studying. I waited until early Dec. to book, and was nervous we wouldn't find a spot. La Ripaille was recommended and fortunately they had a reservation available. We were greeted by the owner who is French, and a... More

My husband and I had a tradition of going to a particular restaurant in the west Village on Christmas Eve, but we found out that it closed this year. When thinking about a replacement, I remembered a quaint, romantic French restaurant I had taken my husband to a few years ago for his birthday. Luckily, we were able to get... More

This has been a great local go to spot for many years and it has continued to serve great, authentic french meals. The spot is very romantic with lots of candles and cozy velvet Louis VII style chairs. The owner is great and is always ready to make a suggestion about what is the best and the freshest in the... Four adults had dinner here recently. Nice variety of French food. Owner comes out to explain specials, answer any questions, and take order, which is a nice touch. We had, Sole, shrimp, salmon & duck, and all were quite good. Wine list a little pricey. I don't like to be rushed, but at times service was inattentive.

Alan is an incredible owner who is so friendly. The food is authentic French with waitstaff that also speaks French. The peppercorn sauce steak frites is sensational. Their mussels are amazing. The broccoli mousse is a must have.

Description
Opened in 1980, La Ripaille is one of the oldest restaurants in West Village. Some of the regulars have been coming for as long as 25 years. We want everyone to feel welcome here, whether it’s the celebrities who frequent, the children for whom we provide games & crayons, or the people who live in the Village. The owner, Alain Laurent, is integral in the day-to-day processes of La Ripaille. He daily scours the market for the freshest produce, often choosing the day’s specials based on his finds. This keeps the specials seasonal & unique. He decorates the ever changing wine list with the best wines available. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a terrace for the summer & a fireplace in the back for the winter. The candlelit tables light up French posters and paintings & fresh flowers decorate each table. For a taste of history and delicious French cuisine, visit La Ripaille. We have a seat just for you.

Staying in West Village

Neighbourhood Profile
West Village
Stretching from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, the West Village is one of the city’s most coveted addresses. Full of trendy shops, historic taverns, and cozy restaurants set amid 19th century architecture, this neighbourhood has a unique old-world feel. You won’t find a more picturesque location in Manhattan. Without the traditional city grid layout, it’s easy to get lost here, but that’s part of the fun as you stroll down elegant narrow streets with beautiful brownstones. When you need a break, you can always stop in at one of the many quaint eateries or cafes to soak in the atmosphere, or head to the western edge of the neighborhood to enjoy magnificent waterfront views while taking a leisurely walk in Hudson River Park.
