It's a good bar but has gassy craft beer, they could do with a proper hand pump. I don't understand why they seem to be trying for a good beer yet fail to serve it properly. This seems to be standard for all the bars I went to in New York. They should have fewer beers but try looking after... More

I called into this place as a solo traveller exploring NYC. I can't speak for the food, but my experience here was unfriendly and unwelcoming to say the least. A pint of Brooklyn Lager was $7, which was expected, and the music was good. However, the door staff and bartender were very short and unpleasant to deal with. I hope... More

We visited on a cold March Saturday night with friends. The place was reasonably crowded as we walked in. We were quickly greeted by a stereotypical Irish/Yew York bartender - somewhat loud/somewhat rude/somewhat friendly. While myself and my party of fellow lifelong New Yorkers and Boston transplants found this refreshing and comical, I can see how some could find it... More

Couldn't visit NYC without visiting the White Horse Tavern. It was incredible to think that Dylan is stilll remembered after so many years! Apart from the Dylan connection it is a "tidy" pub ( as we say in Wales). Good beer , good food and the welcome was great. Thanks to Nollaig for the "Craic". We even got to sing... More

Hipster place - loosely trading on Dylan Thomas legacy. Food was edible , until the waiter brought the check - $97 for a bar lunch!!! The server was also loud and Irish - swearing a lot and a total wannabe...not very professional at all. Top tip - don`t go in here - go to somewhere authentic for a better meal... More

We had a great time at White Horse Tavern. It was downtown near Wall St which was nice. It was a Friday night when we went so it was very lively. The atmosphere was great and the customers and employees were all friendly. Someone greeted us at the door and welcomed us in. The food was also great and the... More

Stopped in for a wee beer whilst walking around. Was pleasant enough - busy at lunch. Might try the chilli next we go back!

Don't come here if you're expecting anything other than a traditional pub experience. It looks like it hasn't changed in years, got good booze and regulars who all sit around and shoot the breeze. The bar tender couldn't really give a damn about personal service, but obviously enjoys what he does and always seems to have a new story to... More

The SceneThe literary-minded tourists and the local lushes who haunt this joint on weekends know that Dylan Thomas may have been Welsh but it was the scotch that killed him. At the site of his debauched death, various portraits of the poet hang on the dark-paneled walls while indifferent regulars focus on the task at hand: The White Horse has stayed in operation since 1880 by serving its customers--before Thomas and after--one drink at a time. The FoodIn our health-conscious century, though, we know it's as likely to be the pub grub as the booze that does you in. Nonetheless, White Horse's full-flavored burgers, delectable grilled chicken sandwich and slab-cut fries are worthy of poetic excesses--and perhaps even early death. The appetizer classics, leaning heavily on the common denominator of "fried," range from excellent (amply stuffed potato skins and sharp jalapeno poppers) to uninspired (lukewarm buffalo wings).

Staying in West Village

Neighbourhood Profile
West Village
Stretching from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, the West Village is one of the city’s most coveted addresses. Full of trendy shops, historic taverns, and cozy restaurants set amid 19th century architecture, this neighbourhood has a unique old-world feel. You won’t find a more picturesque location in Manhattan. Without the traditional city grid layout, it’s easy to get lost here, but that’s part of the fun as you stroll down elegant narrow streets with beautiful brownstones. When you need a break, you can always stop in at one of the many quaint eateries or cafes to soak in the atmosphere, or head to the western edge of the neighborhood to enjoy magnificent waterfront views while taking a leisurely walk in Hudson River Park.
