While doing a self-tour of Lower East Side, this is a must stop. On a chilly February day, the lunch of matzo ball soup, knish, and latke was incredible. The decor is nothing to write home about, but the authentic experience and food is.

It's a place as if it has been the same for 50 years. Old walls, old furniture. I ate a knish, it was good. The service is not amable, the lady brought the bill although I didn't ask it. But it is an interesting and...More

This place was mentioned in one of the airline magazines as the #1 knish place in New York City, which would make it #1 in the world. I looked very much forward to tasting the world's best knishes and experiencing the authentic charms of a...More

Interesting place per various reviews. But we don't understand Yiddish culture. Cute sayings, not a lot of variety (although it was open on Christmas day). Tastes more like Latin American "empanadas", but in the shape of muffins Overrated but reliable. Right on Houston street.

Stopped here on a food tour. Wonderful experience. A view into how it used to be, coupled with a great knish.

You don't go to Yonah Schimmel to have a fancy experience. This is an historic hole in the wall at the edge of the Lower East Side - the specialty is knishes, which is what my wife and I had. We each had a potato...More

This has been a special place to me as long as I can recall. Everything bagel is still 100 and the divey-ness of its Houston location only adds to the years and memories recounted on the walls. Owner/Namesake is normally at the Counter, and Abby...More

We’ve never tried knish before but read about Yonah Schimmel’s and had to visit. We tried a plain potato knish and it was so good. Is definitely worth a visit

Great knishes in a cute historic place. The owner is nice and so hard working... inspiring. Besides the flavors on the menu, ask about the flavor of the day because it changes.

A knish is basically a ball of mashed potatoes surrounded by a thin layer of dough. It can be baked or fried with different vegetables mixed into the filling. Knishes gained popularity with immigrants in New York as a... More
