Been eating here for decades. Moved out of state 25 years ago and we always grab knights to take home on visits to The City. They figured out how to make a perfect potato knish generations ago, and the soft, smooth, creamy taste is always the same. I will say I've tried several of their other styles over the years,... Lower East Side food institution with big lineups that are worth the wait for large, delicious knishes that are crowd pleasers.

A throw back in time, a fast place to dine. If simple and authentic is the order of the day and this is the place to find traditional Eastern European potato food. Very old-school, simple and without any effort authentic. Old-school.

Okay, Mr. Schimmel is long gone, and these are basically baked potatoes, but for anyone who has ever wondered what "ground zero" of Knishes is like, this is the place. Real history here. Over a century of layers of paint on the walls; a New York authentic experience. Take some home to warm up with Matzoh ball soup.

Since the food tour was booked, we decided to do our own. Very old place with a hundred years of paint on the bakery case. Get a Knish, you can get a bagel anywhere!

These are knishes... (not the factory made knockoffs at many other places) One of the only restaurants that specialize in knishes, Yonah Schimmels is a blast from the past... the only problem is deciding which one to get! Dessert /cheese knishes include a chocolate-cheese treat... as well as fruit varieties.. There are lots of savory knishes as well from the... More

One of the must stops on any eating tour of New York. The great debate is whether or not to stop but how many knishes and what kind to bring home. The kasha is my favorite, but they are all great.

it's entirely possible to walk by Schimmel's and dismiss it for another local Jewish deli, but you would only partially and slightly correct. Schimmel's has been around since 1910 but that is still not the only reason to go there. The knishes are, in fact, the best in town. Their simplicity, consistency, texture, and flavor are truly unique. Sweet or... More

What kind of person goes to NYC and doesn't have a knish or two? This is the most authentic remnant of the Jewish Lower East Side remaining. Simple Eastern European dish brought to perfection in NY. Have a Kasha (Buckwheat) knish with mustard and a blueberry cheese knish for desert. And if they have the mushroom barley soup, don't miss... More

We just happened upon this place as we were exploring the neighbourood. Glad we did....not only was the apple and cheese knish incredible tasting it was fresh and served by the nicest man ever. It was the best thing we ate on this trip to NY....I will remember it always! I know that is a lot of praise for a... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
