Went for dinner last night with a friend. Reservation was needed and honored right on time. Seated, got the water and menus! Looking around I realized I was not the only one who could not read the offerings...it was the darkest restaurant I have ever visited. Menu was really great with great selections but had to read it with the... More

A painfully intimate jazz-era Italian eatery bathed in darkness with tasty but affordable dishes gracing its menu, its subterranean location on Bowdoin not far from the state house a testimony to the funky eateries tucked into the back corners of this grand dame of historic American neighborhoods. And yes, classic bop graces the sound system, the wines are good, and... More

Had a lovely dinner at Grotto. It is a bit off the main path in Beacon Hill, and tucked downstairs so you have to be looking for it. But worth the effort. Food was top notch. Service very good. My only knock was it was a bit dark and hard to read the menu. Maybe a sign of old age....

We spent a rainy night in Grotto's cozy basement. From the candlelit ambience to the delicious food options, it was a very special evening among friends (though Grotto would obviously make for a great date...) The 3-course $35 dinner option was excellent value for money. The dishes all looked beautiful -- the pasta looked like a bird's nest! The banana... More

The reviewers are correct, this basement restaurant is dark ... really dark. You will need the light from your phone or a small flashlight to read the menu and see what is on your plate. From what I could see, this isn't the cleanest restaurant I have been to. But, you come here to eat, so how ways the food?... More

Grotto was such a great find for my anniversary dinner with my boyfriend! The restaurant is pretty small so I would recommend making a reservation in advance. It's very cozy inside and the ambiance of the low lighting and candles on tables make for a great atmosphere. It almost looks as though it's an underground cave turned into a restaurant... More

Grotto is one of my favorite spots in Boston. It is very small and cozy, and is great for a date or intimate dinner. The food is SO GOOD. Everything is so well made, with high quality ingredients. The fixed price menu is super reasonable ($35 for app, pasta and dessert, $40 for app, entree and dessert), and the wine... More

Grotto is a tiny hidden gem of a restaurant in Beacon Hill. Couple things to note, important to have a reservation and there is no bar area or common area at all so it is not in your best interest to arrive early as there is no where to stand. The entire restaurant is about 20 tables. The food is... More

A few blocks away from the Boston Commons, near the State House, is a little underground cave restaurant. We had several of the three course menus and found them all tasty and of good portion and value. It took a cellphone flashlight to read the menus but I suppose it would be a good romantic spot for a date.

We came here with a group of people a couple of weeks ago. My wife and I would never go back, despite the good food. It is cramped in space, very noisy to the point that conversation is really difficult, and in a dark atmosphere. You can't read the menu unless you use the light on your cell phone. Unless... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Beacon Hill
Visit this historic and ritzy Boston neighborhood to soak up its classic New England charm as you stroll down cobblestoned, gas-lamp lined streets. Bring your walking shoes, camera, and select a nice day to wander through the hilly neighborhood and check out its exclusive addresses. Louisburg Square, Mt. Vernon street, Chestnut street and the extremely narrow and widely photographed Acorn street make a nice walking path. Make sure to meander down Charles street to poke into boutiques and antique shops, cafes, and restaurants on this quaint shopping street. Don’t forget to catch a glimpse up close of the State House with its beautiful and iconic dome.
