Came here before the change of owners, it was pretty grim. Now it's been cleaned up and feels old and yet modern at the same time. Wonderful service and clever libations make this a destination for locals.

Cozy little pub in otherwise busy district. The wood panelling and Art Deco lamps give the place a warm cozy feel. The bartender is very generous with whiskey pour.

Very dark room place, mainly because of the wooden panelling. Always busy. The reason for that is that they serve a good selection of beer, and speciality cocktails. The staff are courteous and knowledgeable.

I love this place, there's no denying it. Dim, tight, some might even call it dank, but man is it awesome. It's as if Dean Martin showed up at a hipster party and all the youths trying to be as cool as he was didn't know who he was. But they'd still know he was cooler than cool. And that's... More

Have stopped by the House of Shields quite a few times over the years (decades). It's a great old joint...small, atmospheric, good drinks...very much The City. Old timers like me were terrified when it was "remodeled" a few years back but, I must say, they did a really nice job...preserving all the old while giving the place a needed upgrade... More

Came here after checking into the Palace Hotel across the street. Very good hand made drinks and nice enough bartender. Would go back. Only drawback was no food.

Very good drinks, smiley barmade, not a big place but it did the job. Had two different drinks and both were very good. When you are on a end-of-the-day-and-i-need-a-drink mode, try it ! :)

Quality cocktails, fine whisky selection, good music, and cozy booths. I'm happy we found this place!

I wanted to check this place out since I read so many great reviews on it! My husband and I went in around 4 pm on a Friday so it had several customers but definitely wasn't packed. We sat at a booth against the wall and soon realized that there weren't any cocktail waitresses only the bartender who was busy... More

A colleague and I stopped in for a couple of drinks after a conference. The place has a ton of character. It's a restored bar from the 1900's. It has pretty limited seating and I don't think they serve food (no one was eating and we weren't offered menus), but it's a great place. If I lived in the area... More

Staying in SoMa

Neighbourhood Profile
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighbourhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighbourhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
