The signage in Chinatown is loud and can be confusing but you won't go wrong by choosing this place for lunch. It was good. The hot and sour soup was terrific. Lots of spice. I'd definitely recommend this place.

After a day of traveling, four of us were in search for a late afternoon meal and happened upon Uncle's Cafe. Filled with locals, we were sure we hit upon a gem and, if it was simply based on the food, it would be a good to very good (not excellent) find. We are not sure if a language barrier... More

We wanted to eat in China Town, we found Uncle's Cafe, or they found us on the street and walked us to our table with no waiting, it was early 6PM - the place filled up with locals later. The menu was huge. We had a group of 5 so we ordered an item that was for 4 (the 5th... More

When in Chinatown avoid the tourist restaurants and look for where the locals eat. Uncle's café is such a place. Always busy, always noisy and always an adventure. Uncle's is an excellent place for a quick lunch or more leisurely dinner but be aware that at dinner it is packed with local families who dawdle so expect a wait. This... More

Had the hot pot with 3 broths plus bak choi, lamb and beef. We also had noodles and ma po tofu to share. Plenty Of food and Excellent. Those giving this place 1 stars seem to be expecting Americanized Chinese food: the one star reviewer who was complaining about his general Tso's chicken convinced us to go here... Glad we... More

We went here because my wife struck up a conversation with the cute little Chinese girl that everyone was ignoring on the street corner trying to pass out menus. My wife felt sorry for her so we went. Sooo glad we did. This is an authentic Chinese place with a good mix of 'Americanized Chinese' food to make it acceptable... More

I ate here for lunch while I was touring Chinatown. I ordered the Kung Pao tofu and hot and sour soup. It was so hot and spicy that my eyes watered the whole time. But once my taste buds calmed down I realized just how great the food was, and not very expensive. I went back for dinner a few... More

We found this place by accident, and we were pleasantly surprised with how great it was. Terrific food, reasonable prices. And as we were here early in the evening, the service was actually pretty good. We ordered the Mandarin dinner too, and liked everything. Next time we are in San Francisco we will make a point to come back here.

What really turned us off was the poor service. Most aspects of their service were slow and inattentive. Slow to seat us, and slow to provide menus and water. Our server was angered by our polite questions about menu items. I ordered Gen. Tsao's chicken, straight off the menu with a photo of the dish. The photo of course was... More

Nothing against PF Chiangs really. But this place is closer to real Chinese. I've eaten here a couple of times and always enjoyed it. It is sort of a joint though, but the food is good and service friendly. They make a nice American breakfast too with eggs and hashbrowns.

Chinatown
As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighbourhood decorated with colourful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighbourhood.
