We enjoyed a great sandwich, and a good beer at this corner gem. It is located at Columbus and Union, with the bus stop right there. I had a grilled eggplant sandwich on delicious green onion foccacia bread, and my husband had a salami combo. If you want a reasonably priced quick meal, this is it. I'm told the breakfast... More

We just stop by for a coffee after dinner. Simple place, not fancy but the coffee was great. I saw that they have a nice set of options for food but we haven't tried.

We went two mornings to have great coffee and breakfast sandwiches. I also had a delicious mozzarella salad! Decor was just right for this unique coffee bar! Very clean, service good and bathrooms! Try this cozy little place with big offerings!

We dropped in for wine while we waited an hour and a half for a famous pizza place down the street. This neighborhood bar and restaurant, Mario’s, has a warm, friendly atmosphere with a mixture of ages from young to old, and a mixture of nationalities from local to other countries. The doors were wide open to the delightful, cool,... More

We went here last week and were very disappointed. The beer was good but the eggplant parmigiana was reheated, burnt, overcooked and lukewarm in the middle. We should have sent it back but it was evening and we were tired and hungry. There was also a homeless gentleman bothering customers and staff, so much so that the police were called.... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
