Don't let the decor fool you - they have great ice cream with plenty of flavors to choose from. In addition, their staff is funny and friendly. Caution: You may get addicted to their flavors!

Two things to keep in mind: Swensen's doesn't open until noon, and there is no seating. I guess previous reviewers who enjoyed watching the cable cars go by must have seen them while standing on the street eating their cones or waiting in line. Arriving when it opened, I was the one and only customer on this January day. No... More

We came across Swensen's by chance after jumping off the cable car for the Lombard Street and then walking down the hill a bit. I think this is the best ice cream in San Francisco and is certainly better value for money than Ghirradellis which isn't a surprise as it is smack bang in the middle of the tourist area.... More

Always busy. Great service. Excellent ice cream. No seating so just grab & go. Greta selection of flavors.

I got the single peanut butter and my wife got the sticky chocolate. Fantastic ice cream - just what we were looking for having pizza a few doors down at Za. Single size was plenty - no need to go for the double. Cash only so be prepared. No indoor seating.

They make the ice-cream right on the premises and right in front of the sales counter. They have many flavors. You can get cones or cups. They have outstanding hot fudge and hot caramel for sundaes.

Staying in Russian Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
