In addition to many varieties of brews made on site, the food is worthy of a visit. We had halibut and hanger steak both of which were excellent.

My husband and I ordered drinks from the bar. We had the luna coffee stout and the bourbon barrel grand cru. Both beers were tasty; we sat it cozy chairs in the bar area. The bartenders were very nice. We didn't order food this time, but we plan to come back and try it sometime. The prices seemed a bit... More

My husband and I have several favorite Milwaukee restaurants and thought Hinterland may be added to the list. We were wrong. We had three food courses, cocktails and wine, and all were frankly average. Service was poor, and to top it off, we couldn't believe the prices we were paying for mediocrity. The lighting is nice and tables are well... More

We always enjoy the generous glasses of wine at Hinterland. We hung out in the bar area for drinks and appetizers on a Wednesday evening. It wasn't terribly busy, but there was a steady stream of people throughout the evening. The armchairs had been replaced since our last visit and are much more comfortable than previously. We enjoyed great service... More

Hinterland provides a modern earthy feel on entering. The restaurant features a creative cocktail list (including options like a brandy-based old fashioned and a Bolivian sour) as well as some local beer options. We elected to try out the appetizers exclusively for sharing (as we were a large group). This included a charcuterie board, cheese board, cheese bread (which is... More

I visited Hinterland a few months ago with some girlfriends. The food was unique and interesting, which was fun. We liked sampling small plates we had never had before. However, the service was pretty slow and the waiting staff was not the friendliest. Also, it was a little expensive so if you're looking for cheaper small plates, this is not... More

Visited with my work family, food was great! I tried the Toucan Sam craft cocktail, it was similar to a Mai Tai, but with a grapefruit flavor. I liked it because I prefer the tart flavor to the excessively sweet. Everyone had a wonderful time, great space, very comfortable.

Four of us went there for their delicious tacos! And couldn't pass up their Charcuterie Plate with some great local Rishi tea. Our waiter was informative, fun, positive and overall enjoyable. Not stuffy or pretentious feeling like you might think being an upscale restaurant in the Third Ward. Can't wait to go back for some Hamachi Sashimi.

Chilly staff. Granted I was wearing t-shirt, shorts, sandals. I indicated that the bar would be fine seating for a party of 1. Frosty is best description of how I was treated, while the restaurant was largely empty of patrons. It would appear that you need to be in suit and tie to be treated like a human here. Basically... Hinterland GastroPub is a great place for a wedding reception. I can best describe the decor as industrial / modern with a little rustic thrown in for good measure. This is not your parent's wedding hall! Which is why our daughter chose it! The appetizers were wonderful. The cheese and charcuterie plate was loved by everyone. The Chicken Liver Mousse... More

Description
Hinterland...A new hub for contemporary American cuisine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Executive Chef Dan Van Rite and Sous Chef Dan Turek, explore a multicultural approach to cooking and eating. Their journey to create bold flavors and uncommon pairings is a daily mission at Hinterland. In order to accomplish this sojourn, we've partnered with fisherman in Honolulu, Seattle and Portland, Maine. These partnerships allow our chefs to procure fresh fish as often as two times a day. Other relationships with small, local growers and ranchers allow us to provide our customers with extraordinary game as well as hand foraged mushrooms and heirloom produce. The result is a menu that evolves with every season and changes everyday.
