Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stopped off here to have lunch I had seen some comments about people being offended as they stopped to take photos and use the facilities without buying anything - so be warned but all they ask is a RFDS donation Lunch was really nice...and reasonable prices Atmosphere was good and the drinks were cold The place also operates a caravan park out the back which looked spaciousMore

It would be wrong to pass through without stopping in at this iconic outback pub. It was 11 am when we went through so we had a Dundee beer and took some photos and then continued on our way. No coffee option was a bit...of a shame but worth the quick stop.More

You just have to stop and have a beer if you’ve ever watched crocodile dundee. Take 10 mins out of your trip for a beer and a photo.

Great caravan park, awesome pub, no food service as no staff, but friendly staff and cold drinks. Very interesting memorabilia.

Despite the previous negative reviews we found the pub and it’s staff welcoming with good food. The Dundee Burger was delicious as were the accompanying chips. The staff, a young Spanish gentleman and young Australian woman were efficient and more than happy to help. Would...definitely stop here again for lunch.More

What a joke!!! The most unauthentic outback hotel experience ever!! I have lived in the outback (NSW) for 10 years and visited many country/outback pubs in my time. I have also travelled extensively through rural and remote Queensland and always try to support hotels in...these areas. We had had a fantastic lunch at the Blue Heeler Hotel in Kyuna last year on our way to Lawn Hill NP so thought that we would share the love and go to the walkabout hotel this year on our to NT after all it is very famous (from Croc Dundee) and well advertised. Drove past the Blue Heeler (worst mistake ever) to head onto Walkabout Hotel - got there at 12.30pm to find out that they were closing at 1pm and were not doing meals “for the foreseeable future” 😧. Asked if they had any bar snacks and all she could come up with was an out of date packet of BBQ chips!!! This place is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy - if you can’t provide a service to your customers they will stop coming and you will be closing your doors sooner rather than later ie you cannot rest on the laurels of a movie made 37 years ago to provide your patronage, My advice for anyone travelling in these parts - stop and enjoy the wonderful hospitality and fabulous food at the Blue Heeler Hotel in Kynuna and the drive right on past the Walkabout - not even worth stopping for a photo. So disappointing 😢More

Real Crocodile Dundee pub is a very disappointing & as remote from the movie pub as it is remote geographically. The set used in the movie is located behind the Walkabout Creek Hotel/pub in a rather small shack behind the metal grid with lots of...construction tools and other shack related stuff on the foreground. When I asked a question regarding famous knife I was told that "it was not a museum & knife was brought in by the pub owner only occasionally, as a big surprise, and only if/when the atmosphere was right". No food available between 2pm and 6:30pm. The Walkabout Creek Hotel pub is typical outback pub, but smallish & looking tired, with lots of memorabilia related to the movie as well as photos & drawings which some might find funny while others see as vulgar. I guess it depends on the amount of beer consumed. McKinlay township is tiny, dusty, with a number of dilapidated building surrounded by flat, dusty & empty land as far as an eye can see and the whole feeling of the place is rather depressing. If you are traveling though anyway it is worth a stop to quench your thirst & form your own opinion. If you need to spend a night somewhere & have a choice I would vote for Cloncurry without a second of hesitation.More

If it was not for the Crocodile Dundee connection, no one would stop here. As it is, the van park was full last night. The pub staff are very friendly and helpful. They are experts in the art of selfies. The beer is cold and...the variety is wide. Seating is available inside the pub or outside on the verandah. Dogs are welcome on leash on the verandah. Food is available. The pub is rather run down. The memorabilia is showing it’s age. The park amenities are cabin style, clean and well maintained. The hot water is and the pressure is good. Sites vary from back in to drive through. There is no difference in price. The surface is gravel. There is some shade but it is limited. Turkeys and chooks roam free.More

We called in for a beer on our way to the N.T. Well worth the stop for a coldie and a chat with the publicans. Very knowledgeable about the district . If there late in day would recommend staying the night.

I passed through the Walkabout a few weeks ago and had a blast with the bar staff. All of them were very friendly I don’t know what al these bad reviews are about. Still a requirement to check in and show your double vaccination but...that is a standard requirement all throughout QLD. Had a great time there and can’t wait til I pass though againMore

We excitedly left early to get to McKinlay to visit the pub as their opening hours are 11am til 1pm. No meals. We arrived about 10 mins before the pub opened so we sat on the verandah and battled with the flies! All good, part...of the outback! When it opened, the older lady that owns the pub wouldn’t let us in until we signed in and showed proof of vaccinations. So, we did all that and finally were allow in! The hospitality from the owner was NIL… she had no interest in us being there and couldn’t have cared less if we were there or not! He daughter and boyfriend were pretty good though which was nice! As for the pub, the only part of the hotel in the Dundee movies was the front of the pub. Inside is NOT what we saw in the movies. We were quite disappointed l. We had 1 drink and left. We kinda didn’t feel like we weren’t welcomed there! Such a shame cause it could be a great place and tourist attraction. It needs new managers with good old fashioned hospitality skills!More

The publican family were fun to chat to and did make us feel welcome. Beer was good. There seemed to be chairs and tables about and plenty bits and pieces to see. It would be good to have some bar snacks - even packets of...crisps and nuts. There were no meals in March. Found out the reduced hours were because the family are also the post office and the mail run and that is a very very strict contract. It also helps balance the budget. Worth a drop in after 5pmMore

The family and I were so looking forward to visiting this place....sadly we were so disappointed!. The bar staff were rude, the opening hours were pitiful especially as everyone who visits comes from a large distance. There was no welcome, demanded to see covid check...in before you even set a foot in the door, certainly no hospitality. No meals, not enough seating for customers, just plain right rude and ignorant. The whole place needs updating. Mould all over the bathroom ceilings. Do not stay here... take your money elsewhere!!!More

Arrived at 1.00pm. Lady and her daughter in front of me had the door closed on them with a curt...we're closed. Apparently they close from 1.00 till 5.00pm every day for a mail run that locals tell me is done twice a week. Have heard...all sorts of excuses but on this trip we went to 11 outback pubs in a variety of larger and smaller towns all of which opened normal pub hours. When we drove out 6 other groups left at the same time. Yes, it is their right to open when they want. It is also my right to spend my dollars where it is appreciated and they make it very easy to go somewhere else. Luckily there was a welcoming pub down the track who were open and friendly. Very sad to see such an iconic providing what in my opinion is poor customer service. It would appear from the reviews, many other feel the same so I hope the owners review their method of business.More

Hi deserttaz Not sure what you mean by 'is it still open'. Are you referring to the floods that cut off Mackinlay? 5 days ago Mackinlay was still cut off with several trucks isolated in the town. Best to email Mackinlay... More
