An interesting Tavern where you are entertained with live period music and staff in period dress. The staff at the Tavern is very friendly and informative about the menu which has several Gluten Free choices and children's selections. items We started with the Ploughman's Platter which has meat, cheese, pickles, pickled relish, greens and bread. The menu changes a bit but... More

Step into the past in a big way with this old towne tavern in Colonial Williamsburg. Rustic and vibrant, it's a fun place with live musicians and entertainment, and period food. The dishes offered are quite different from what we're used to, but nonetheless tasty. A fun way to spend an evening in Colonial Williamsburg.

Chownings is known for their Good Bread and prime rib. Food is usually very good and the 18th-century entertainment is better. A fun place to bring family and friends for a memorable experience.

I brought my family here for our first family dinner in Williamsburg. The atmosphere is great. We loved the songs and entertainment during our meal. The food is mediocre but you are mostly there for the experience of being back in the "old days". The kids had so much fun.

We enjoyed our evening here thoroughly. We got a ploughman's lunch and a pint, sat back and enjoyed the ambient fiddler. A "person of the past" was teaching young girls to curtesy, but it was a male person of the past and it was hilarious to see him fussing with his imaginary skirts. A fun evening and satisfying supper!

We always eat in the taverns when visiting Colonial Williamsburg. Chownings never disappoints, from the beef stew to the Welsh Rarebit! if you have never tried it...give it a whirl!

The food at Chowning's is delicious and the service is great. I love the hot cider and beef trenches, but I think the best thing is the shepherds pie! The only issue with Chowning's is the wait. It is small and does not accept reservations, so stop by early, they open at 11, and put your name on the list...they'll... More

We love to have a beer and some lunch here (homemade chips are wonderful). They have a great spot outback where we sit at the bar and just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. It is not uncommon to have local folk stop by and share a story or two.

We visited Chowing's in the beginning of October, when it is still about 70 -75 degrees, and were on a campus tour. We knew the food would be good, and had a variety of different items on the lunch menu, to fit myself and two teenagers. I had the garden salad, which was light and refreshing, my children had sandwiches... More
