Well placed with a great views and staff were friendly and courteous but overpriced meals for pub food and the outrageous drink prices put a dampener on our experience. We had chicken and beef schnitzels with mushroom sauce, chips and salad ($23.00 each) and two pints of shandy ($8.50 each), total bill $63.00. Both schnitzels were of a good size, chips were plentiful and both were served piping hot but salad was dismal. There were 38 of us there and everybody remarked about the high drink prices and the woeful salad.

Our family spent 5 days at Penneshaw KI 7 days after the tragic bushfires. On our last night we visited the Penneshaw Hotel. The atmosphere was great the hotel had plenty of seating and the service was excellent. All our meals were excellent, all large and genertous serves from a menu that was comprehensive. My wife and I ordered the Lamb Chops, 3 large chops grilled to perfection and a wonderful flavour, all the family really enjoyed their meal selections and above all the prices were very reasonable. Wine prices were also reasonable so all in all we loved our Penneshaw Hotel meals and would recommend the hotel to any one staying in Penneshaw

We visited twice in December 2019 for lunch and a dinner. Both were fine but not remarkable. As frequent visitors to KI, we have eaten there previously in 2017, 2018 and found it much better value and quality. The food is pub food and reliable although pricey for the quality. The outside area is great for kids if weather permits and the dining area is spacious. Would visit again if feeling too lazy to cook but wouldn’t make a trip specially to eat there if on the island.

The food we ate here was quite disappointing and we didn't feel the welcoming embrace that we did in every other place we visited in KI. The prices are VERY high for the quality of the food and there are other local options that are smashing it. Pretty view though and a nice outdoor area if you're looking for some drinks and nibbles.

Pub was very quiet on a cool evening. Ordered 2 meals which were both very disappointing. I had fish & chips and my husband chose the grilled whiting and chips. We were presented with a huge pile of chips and a tiny piece of fish. Very poor value for money. Service not especially friendly either.

Lucky to get a table on the northern side offering clear views to the mainland. On a warmer day the outside eating area would have been tempting! Staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. A serve of moist beautifully cooked fish couple with salt and pepper squid. Just what was needed before the ferry trip back to the mainland.

Went here for a family meal - kids meals were great - our kids loved the pasta but there were also a wide range of other kids options. I ordered the beetroot and quinoa salad with chicken. Unfortunately the salad was quite bland, pretty disappointing. My husband had the schnitzel which was ok for him. Overall and ok meal but the setting is gorgeous. It would be better if there were more healthy options but ok.

Very friendly staff and definitely good view, but the most important element - food, not good. I ordered fish n chips, pub classic, paid $28 yet was the worst fish m chips I’ve ever had. 2 small pieces of battered n fried fish fillets which had a really strong chemical like after taste, small amount of chips, the side salad looked like everything was thrown on the plate then topped with some mayo. I don’t mind paying more or wait a bit longer because it was a busy night but at least the food should be good.

We absolutely love Kangaroo Island and visit frequently but really need to write a review on the below standard seafood platter. We waited all day without eating as thought would savour the fresh seafood at the hotel. Disappointing is an understatement. Squid was so over salted you could not eat it, the king George piece of tiny slither was sad, and the worse was the burnt beyond belief prawn which there was no meat left on it. Mussels were ok with a few chips and salad. We understand it gets busy but no excuse for below standard of food wouldn’t it be better to have quality in a smaller serve when paying $42 per platter. If the chef cannot up the game just don’t order it try something else.

We ordered a bowl of mussels to share for an entree, a very sour faced young waitress delivered them without cutlery, serviettes, no plates just the bowl of mussels!! Tiny mussels and 2 empty shells. The same waitress could easily see we were finished and waiting g on mains but, she ignored us and proceeded to clear a table that had been vacated for the past 15 mins. Our mains were then delivered by a young male waiter, prior to entree dishes being removed he apologised & was super polite, friendly & helpful. Our mains of two different style of burger was awesome. Overall food was okay but some staff do not deserve to remain employed if they can’t interact in a friendly & helpful manner ... called hospitality!!

We loved this pub, it became the centre of our Penneshaw visits and we ate there several times. It has a great outdoor area overlooking the sea, with views to the mainland. Food was excellent - both surf and turf based - and the staff were friendly, god local chat if you wanted but not intrusive, and always accommodating even when the restaurant seemed full. Could improver the selection of beers. especially local ones.

Quaint pub with friendly young staff. Great views over to the mainland across Backstairs Passage . We had the $90 seafood platter, unfortunately they had run out of oysters so gave us another half crayfish instead. Loved it ,well not so much the marinated octopus. The calamari was excellent. The kingfish sushimi quite good. The crays were slightly overcooked but still very nice. Prawn skewers and smoked salmon, tasty. Battered fish also good. Salad and chips also good. We thought it was well done and good value for the money. We watched the thunder and lightning roll in as a beautiful schooner sailed off into the sunset. JUST MAGIC. Then like in a time warp we won half our cost back on old poker machines that STILL only take $1 coins. Highly recommend.

We had booked lunch at the Penneshaw Hotel soon after our arrival on KI on the Sealink ferry from the mainland. We were a little early, so decided to try a cheese platter with a bottle of wine, to pass the time. Our table was inside the building, with a nice view back over the bay to the mainland, but the door to the outside area was open, making it quite chilly inside. A fire was built in the nearby slow combustion fireplace soon after, but it hardly effected a change in the room temperature during our lunch stop. The cheese platter was great with a nice cheese selection (especially, the ‘Blue’ & also included dried fruits & nuts. It went down very well with our selected False Cape Riesling. For lunch, 2 of us chose the Boston Bay Mussels with linguine, whilst another had the Boston Mussels as an entree sized main & our last member selected the Salt & Pepper squid. All meals were well presented & much better than typical pub fare. Overall, an enjoyable experience & would certainly return.

Me and my partner arrived here for a drink after getting evacuated from our campsite due to the bush fires the lady on the till yesterday evening around 7.30pm was extremely rude. After waiting our turn to be served she then went on to serve others which ended up being a table of around 10 anyways she eventually served us in a very rude manner, when I asked if we could wait and reserve a table she said no I then asked why and she said they were fully booked, I then asked for water and she sighed and then got me some making me feel very unwanted and unwelcome. I felt there was no need for her behaviour the pub was busy but I wouldn’t say it was an overwhelming environment. I think this is something that should be identified. When the pub was still busy we had staff tell us they were finishing up, overall very unwelcoming. We had no where to stay that night and were trying to make the best of a very sad situation. When we left we said thanks and good night that same woman ignored us.

Headed into Penneshaw to 'spend our money' as we are encouraged to do at this time to help the island rebuild. Went in and waited then heard this very abrupt sounding woman tell the men before us that they can't eat there as they are fully booked with a big event. While that may have been the case, perhaps a sign outside advising of that, or a better delivery might have been in order. She was so rude sounding. We turned and headed out immediately.
