Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

YUM. Great coffee, with a cafe seating area that lets you spy the sea on one hand, and people watch the Main Street on the other. Don’t skip the signature vanilla slice with your coffee! Smooth creamy custard is a delicious alternative to the stiff...custard option usually offered. And the amazing staff just complete the whole offering.More

I would recommend this. It was not too sweet, and the portion was generous. Easily shared between 2 to 4 people. Nice for tea after a walk around the area.

I loved the vanilla slice, despite it costing $10. I learnt later that another bakery down the road had the same cakes for much less.

Late afternoon snack after building up hunger walking around the Point Nepean National Park. We ordered a vanilla slice and soft drink each and thought the slice was good. Soft, fresh and not too sweet. The cost of $30 seems high for what we got.

Purchased this stale, almost bitter tasting vanilla slice, which is clearly at least a day old, earlier today. Upon calling the store to let them know, I encountered a particularly argumentative "manager" was said they guarantee freshly made today. Images (& taste) would tend to...tell a different story, with the appearance of old yellow custard particularly around corners and edges. Reading recent reviews I'm clearly not the only one to encounter this. Gone down hill.More

Four stopped off for coffee’s and hot chocolate. The drinks were o.k. We didn’t buy anything else as it was 3 o’clock and the food, including vanilla slices looked tired. Staff looked tired too,

Go anywhere but here for coffee! Takeaway coffee cup is always only about 3/4s and charge an eye-watering $7 for the privilege. If you ask for more milk they give some excuse about 'froth' but i always have flat white (no froth). I have (stupidly)...bought 7 coffees from there, all different barristers and all grossly shortchange on the coffee. If you want a full cup ie what you pay for - go anywhere else. Vanilla slice is perfectly nice - but again at $9.50 per slice - there are much better places in the strip.More

Stupidly thought vanilla slice cafe mmm must be good. We ordered 4 coffee and 4 vanilla slices.swiped the card didnt really pay attention. Got the coffee'and a tray of they 4 slices and walked down the road to the beach . When we got there...opened the tray to find 2 nice fresh looking slices and two which had seen much better days dry cracked and changed to a nice dark yellow as custrd does when its getting olde and dried. Didnt thik much about it other than the coffee was average and less than impressed with the vanilla slices. Got online to do some banking and saw what we had been chargerd $75.90 . divided by 4 nearly $19 for a coffee and a slice that was ok. I rang up shop to check prices thought that cant be right was rudely told that the slice was $9.50 and the coffee was $7 becuase we would have been given an extra shot as they were large coffees. plus being a public hoiday we got charged 15 %.. a gouge is a gouge. Wont be back. you would think that in a town that relies on tourism and hospitality that food would be of a certain standard. This was poor and certainly the level of customer service you would expect .. Looks like another great venue has been taken over by non hospitaity people looking to make a quick buck..poor form.More

I was a bit apprehensive to try the Vanilla slice after reading some of the disheartening reviews regarding this “famous” slice of heaven but I was not disappointed when I did! Why did I opt for the Vanilla Slice….well you can’t visit “The Vanilla Slice...Cafe” without trying the showcase cake! I along with four family members all opted for the same and we asked for the take away option (just because our bellies were full of next doors fish and chips at the time). I can honestly say that in my opinion it was a beautiful slice. The vanilla custard was dreamily thick and not artificial tasting like a lot of the vanilla slices I have tasted before. Also it was costly but you did get a mahoosive piece! I would 100% recommend these vanilla slices, they are the real deal indeed.More

My late mother loved to cook scones when I was growing up. It’s been my tradition for years since her death, to rate any scones that I come across, when visiting cafes with friends. I’d read on their menu, “Devonshire Tea, recommended.” ‘Why have I...never noticed scones there before?’ I thought. It was because they weren’t on display. The guy said he couldn’t show them to me, but they were nice. I ordered. They came and looked alright, but as soon as I cut them open, they began to dry out. I tried to give it a fair go. First half of one scone continued to harden as I ate it. I picked up other half and felt it. By this time it was a biscuit. I took it back to them, and lady said: “You ate some of it!” Most of it I didn’t, I said. (She could see it was rock hard) “Thats how scones are!” She said. “Not the ones I’ve eaten,” I persisted. She gave me refund, but angrily said. “Next time, don’t do that!” Just owning the error and apologising would have been better.More

After spending the day in Sorrento, we decided to take home Vanilla Slices, the cafe was recommended to us by the Visitor Centre. When we ordered 2 slices to go, the cashier reached under the counter and presented a takeaway box, I asked her to...open it and there was slices that had seen better days, when I asked if they were fresh today I was told "Yes", I then asked if I could slices from the display, she agreed and another person served us, in between the box that was originally showed to us was discussed behind the counter and we over heard them saying they were yesterdays and they were taken away to the kitchen, @ $9.50 a slice surely only fresh should be served !More

I can understand why the vanilla slice is popular here but the coffee was terrible; runny cappuccino & not just mine. Ruined the experience .

It’s in the name. If you want a vanilla slice, you will be hard pressed to find one better than here. Nice teas and coffees plus of course other cake type items. The cherry coconut slice was a bit like a flapjack and was good,...but the slice definitely won by a big margin. Shame the seagulls have taken a liking to the fish and chips served next door. They were really quite invasive outside on the street terraceMore

Our host is keen on Vanilla Slices and was quite insistent that we stop here to make sure we had some at our vrbo for dessert that evening! We were SO impressed that we made and additional trip on another day to enjoy MORE treats...and coffee for afternoon “tea”. Courteous & friendly staff made us feel welcome AND appreciated!!More
