Max's at Red Hill Estate was a fabulous place to go for lunch. We chose it as part of a truffle hunt day and didn't regret our choice. The lunch was fabulous with each dish showcasing truffles. As a vegan they catered for me and...went above and beyond in altering the set menu to cater for my dietary preference. The view from the restaurant is amazing! The service was timely with all staff being able to answer any questions we had. I would definately recommend this restaurant if you're going to the peninsula and want something special.More

We came to celebrate my friend’s birthday and we cannot be happier with our choice of venue. The ambiance of the restaurant, the menu options and deliciousness of food, the staff, attentive to all, even small, details. We were smitten with the special Happy Birthday...presentation of the dessert for my friend! It was really a nice touch. Thank you. Even the sun was kind to us, providing a picturesque view of the surrounds. The proximity of the cellar door is a huge bonus if you like to grab a bottle (or 12) of delicious wine on the way out.More

Lovely views but it finished there. You would expect expensive food to deliver some sort of excitement to the taste buds. $75 for a 2 course lunch each for myself and my partner - food presentation was good but small portions with not much amazement...in the flavour. Had to stop in on the way home as I was still hungry. Kingfish for starter was boring and hanger steak for main (overdone and not tender). Duck breast for main was way overdone and lacked flavour. Won't be back!More

Firstly the view is spectacular - sweeping vines, overlooking the ocean, wild winds and brooding clouds. Oysters are a hit, as are the truffled croquettes, but wagyu tartare really is a BIG big miss - served on a dish of pebbles in a hollowed out...bone the dish looks spectacular the tartare is dry (no egg to bind it together?), curiously tasteless and incredibly difficult to eat - forking crumbly dry tartare out of a curved hollow bone onto very fragile biscuits is tiresome - a lot of it literally fell into the cracks between the pebbles never to be seen again! In contrast the kingfish ceviche is super. Anyway Life improves greatly with the pork belly - the pork is always brilliant at Max’s - todays rendition was excellent (but I have to say I wish the signature roll from years ago was still on). Deserts are super - fig tart with honey ice cream especially! Redhill single vineyard Pinot Noir was also superb. One other thing - it wasn’t an issue as we were in no hurry but Service is very very slow - I suspect Max’s like the industry in general is still being impacted by post COVID staff shortages.More

We went on the Mushroom Forage It was over promised, under delivered and overpriced for what we got The guides had no knowledge of other mushroom types in the area, their botanical names and were only slightly knowledgeable about the 2 types of mushrooms cooked...in the restaurant After 1 hour of walking we had harvested 6 mushrooms The meal was short on substance, luke warm and every add on had to be paid on the spot Love the restaurant, been going there since it opened and always enjoyed the quality of the food and the experience It was certainly not what we expectedMore

Called in here for lunch after securing the last available table. Wines and food were magnificent and the view is stunning. The only thing I think needed attention was a better system by FOH staff. If we had had the same person looking after our...table the whole time, they would’ve noticed that we were nearly 3/4 through our dessert and still didn’t have the matched wine. There is room for improvement but we throughly enjoyed it!More

The view was beautiful, but that was all. The service was inconsistent and the food the same. starters were all delicious. we were there for an hour and a half before the mains arrived. They arrived in dribs and drabs, some were still raw and...had to be sent back, some didn't arrive at all and then we had to wait even longer. Would not recommend.More

We had lunch here today. When we arrived we were so impressed. Beautiful property, Max's restaurant had such great ambience and the views were amazing. Everything went down hill from there. Lousy service, low quality food, expensive. Would never recommend this place. So disappointing as...the reviews were greatMore

Having been to Max's several times in the past and thoroughly enjoyed it, our recent Sunday lunch was a terrible disappointment. We opted for the two course menu, at $75pp. Sadly, there were only five choices for each of the entree, main and deserts. The...gnocchi entree consisted of only a few small pieces but was tasty as was my main of pork belly, however of the sides ordered, broccoli and chips, the broccoli was almost raw. My partner ordered barramundi which was dry and tasteless and the carrot and cauliflower that came with it were way undercooked. We chose a wine to accompany the meal but had to remind the waitress after it had not arrived by the time the entree was finished. Same with the sparkling water, it took forever. Definitely not worth the $75pp plus extra for sides given the poor food quality and service. As a footnote, a week later we went to Waves in Frankston where the service and food were many times better where the price came to $50pp without having to order side dishes. Max's was such a great venue in the past but forget it if you want to enjoy a nice meal at a fair price, definitely has seen better days.More

I have never written a bad review, until now. We were invited to lunch at Max's whilst visiting nearby. We had visited the winery in 2016 and liked their wines, and so were excited to eat at Max's. I wish I had read the review...by Graemeh595 (unforgettable) before going! We were a party of six who arrived for lunch at 12:30. We chose the 2 course menu option of entree and main, and also had desert. As Graemeh595 noted, we were brought water and only later discovered that it was not complementary. We ordered the Red Hill Estates Chardonnay which, at $50/bottle, was good but pricey. Entrees were received promptly but were below expectations. The seared scallop entree consisted of two miniscule scallops that were undercooked. The Gnocchi was mushy and the sauce was very oily. After that, we waited over an hour with no further service (except to be asked if we wanted more drinks). Similar to Graemeh595, other tables that had arrived after us were being served, but we were not. One of our party went to enquire about the delay, after which the chef came out and told us that they were trying out a new menu and were having some difficulty getting meals prepared. No offer of anything for the inconvenience, just that we had to wait for them to get their creative juices flowing properly. Finally, at 2:30 our mains arrived. The Barramundi was undercooked, the cauliflower that accompanied it was mush, the "puffed wild rice" that was supposed to have accompanied the fish must have been so light that it floated away before getting to the table as it was MIA on the plate, the one baby carrot on top was undercooked, and the sauce was not flavourful. The pork dish was dry. The lamb main was reportedly good but a bit overcooked. Desert- the peaches in the peach melba were not very ripe. The chocolate desert was fine but the best was the cheese plate. Our total bill was $750- so $250 per couple. We have never in our lives spent that much for a meal that we enjoyed so little. Clearly, the email received by Grahemeh595 from management saying that the issues he raised would be discussed at their next team failed to inspire any real change. If you want to spend a lot on a very ordinary meal, then by all means go. Otherwise, there are many other wonderful restaurants in the area from which to choose.More

I am not one to review a restaurant in a bad light. Having attended a Mornington Peninsula Winery restaurant in 2021 of which could not be faulted and received a rating of 10, my party, of which included International Guests were so excited to attend...Maxis restaurant at Red Hill Estate. Being a member of Red Hill Estates Wine Club, Maxs was most definitely the restaurant to reserve and attend. Booking was made for Thursday 8th December 2022 at 1.00pm. Having being seated, waitress attended and explained the menu options. We opted for the 2 course menu of entree and main course. Wonderful start to the menu of our dining experience. All parties offered water prior to ordering. Later found to be not complimentary, but charged at a nominal fee. Entrees were ordered by all parties. All entrees were received promptly but were unfortunately below expectations. Seared Scallops undercooked Beetroot and Walnut Ravioli undercooked Quail Dolmade presented wonderful but unfortunately dry. On completion our waitress of whom could not be faulted in any way, attended to take orders for our main course. Main courses were ordered by all parties This is where everything went downhill. After viewing other diners of whom arrived later than our party receiving their entire meals it was time to question the staff. Time duration between receiving main courses and entrees exceeded 1hour. Questions to the kitchen via our waitress, eventually confirmed that they had lost our order. Not good enough. After our thoughts were relayed to the kitchen by our waitress our ordered meals promptly arrived of which were all overcooked and dry. Many apologies were received from our waitress with the restaurant offering to deduct 1 round of drinks from our bill. Not really acceptable as all parties were not consuming alcohol. When you consider that our cheque for the entire experience exceeded $400.00, obviously we were disappointed with the whole experience and hope that management will rectify. Management were contacted via email, their reply suggested that this would be discussed at their next team meeting and hope we will reattend and give Maxs another chance. No way would we ever reattend.More

Dined at this restaurant today (well worth a 4-hour round trip drive) and, as on previous visits, enjoyed the cuisine immensely. The menu selection isn't huge, but thoughtfully chosen and likely to please any palate. Attention to food detail was appreciated and beautifully and artistically...presented. By chance we were pleased to reacquaint ourselves with our delightful host Max, and did voice a minor complaint about (my husband's) choice of riesling, which we felt was late-picked, carrying too much sugar for our palates. Later, whilst placing wine orders from the adjacent winery, Max reappeared bearing a Trevelen Estate riesling for perusal. Beautiful wine - fresh and vibrant - which certainly caught our attention. So, overall experience was excellent - a venue with beautiful views, crisp white napery and attentive staff. Well worth the drive!!!!!More
