About
Travellers' Choice
2024
Polperro is nestled among the vines and shaded by ancient Angophora trees on a stunning 25 acre property in the heart of the famous wine region Red Hill, Mornington Peninsula. Our aim is to create a synergy between the vineyard and kitchen, and incorporate the seasonal harvests from the estate into the constantly evolving restaurant plates. We are committed to an ethos that promotes a relationship between the landscape, the people and the produce. Our approach is to offer fresh, textural & seasonal flavours with an emphasis on where the food comes from and how it is grown. A collaboration between winemaker and chef ensures a new generation of food & wine offerings. There is a strong focus towards casual dining and drinking with service that is both informed and personable.

After a very speedy wine tasting, we were 15 minutes early for our lunch booking and so were asked to wait outside. We waited 40 minutes! My husband eventually went inside and was told they had forgotten we were waiting. Once seated the waitress was attentive to my need for strictly gluten free items and she took care to clarify that each item she put on the table was either gf or she gave me an alternative item. The series of small tastes were delicious. A different waitress brought the final course (confit duck leg) there was no mention of gf and the item was clearly fried so off limits for me. There was no alternative so it meant I couldn’t eat that item. This was disappointing, not just that I couldn’t eat the item but that the waitress didn’t say anything and I could easily have eaten gluten by mistake. This sounds awful, but it is worth mentioning as it did negatively impact our experience, but the body odour of one of the waitresses was very strong. Noticeable the moment she approached the table and even when she walked past. Not what you expect from a restaurant of this calibre. Overall the food I could eat was innovative and delicious but aspects of the service were lacking. The prices were high (not complaining) the pours were small (this felt a bit stingy) and they asked for a tip at the end (this felt a bit gratuitous after how much we had already paid). My tip is to take a closer look at your service standards.

This place is amazing, you can enjoy your lunch or dinner looking over the beautiful vineyard and grounds. The food is exceptional with flavours that pop in your mouth, the wait staff were well informed of what the where serving they were professional and friendly. We enjoyed a beautiful lunch, but if you wish to have something more casual and light you can sit on the lawn area and admire the beautiful surrounds whilst have a glass of wine or two. Would highly recommend this venue. AT

We choose a slightly cooler summer day (24C) for the easy one hour drive from Melbourne to Red Hill. Like many of the Peninsula vineyards, Polperro enjoys a stunning location with view to the vines, the valleys and mature eucalyptus trees. Loved the veggie garden with rainbow chard and vegetable arrangement just inside the door. We had the house Pinot Noir with the set course menu. With plenty of local options and a surprising number of French wines. A good choice. The service was friendly, knowledgeable and not intrusive . The food however was the motivation for writing this review. Just outstanding. The set course was divided into canapés and a number of plates with a total of 14 items over about 2 hours. With any menu that makes the most of local produce including the garden outside the door it may not be helpful to describe every dish but the Morton bay bug wrapped in rainbow chard was amazing. So glad I saved the last drop of Pinot for the duck. One final point is the ambience. The restaurant was reasonably full but it was not noisy and we could comfortably converse which is increasingly a rare treat these days.

Food was fabulous and service was great to start but 2 hours into service we were left with no service while people around us received drinks, food, tea and coffee - and their bill. After sitting looking at empty water glasses for 30 minutes, and other around us finished service, had tea and coffee and received their bill, we eventually had to walk out to get any attention. When I mentioned to the waitress that we hadn’t had any service for 45 minutes she rolled her eyes and walked away and said angrily “Well do you want tea and coffee now?” (As if we were being difficult) then said “the kitchen mucked up your dessert” and “we are short 3 people”. There was no apology and no grace in her response to us despite us having told her twice that I needed to go as my father had been taken to hospital. It was a very disappointing end to what started as a lovely experience,

You arrive to lovely views across the rolling countryside, before being greeted by the lovely staff, the vibe is comfortable and unpretentious we have to thank Hannah for her wonderful, considered and very personable approach to our whole experience. The Degustation was one of the best I and the group have experienced, with all raving on the variety, tastes and beautiful presentation. The food was portioned perfectly for us with the timing between courses just right to allow our palates to prepare for the next taste treats. Hannah provided excellent advice on complementing the meal with drinks, satisfying the varied needs of our group. For our desert we were offered to move onto the outdoor balcony to enjoy the afternoon sun and our final part of what was an absolutely enjoyable experience. We all commented on how we would be back and could not recommend this highly enough if you're on the Mornington Peninsula, or making it a special treat for those you love.

On arriving a wonderful waitress found us in the lawn garden , she was a breath of fresh air and went about making our visit something to remember. Firstly organising a fabulous wine tasting with the fantastic James then we had lunch prebooked. Lunch in the restaurant was unbelievably good, every mouthful was absolutely scrumptious ! We will remember this beautiful day from start to finish for a longtime Thank you to everyone at Polperro, your welcoming and friendliness were a delight to be around.

My husband and I had lunch during the week and could not have been happier with all aspects of the meal, service and wine. It is a little pricey, but we discovered it was well worth it! Our experience was quite special, plenty of beautifully prepared morsels of deliciousness, food we had not experienced before and we were made to feel welcome by our delightful waiter. Meal was not rushed, so we did not feel like we had over-eaten at the end. Would recommend for any special occasion.

A fabulous lunch on a crisp sunny winters day. Even before we entered the restaurant it was evident that these people care about the ingredients they cook with. The well tended garden displayed some of the menu ingredients and through the door the open fire provided a welcome warmth as a preview of what was to come. The degustation menu was reasonably priced and combined rustic yet contemporary dishes that were intelligently balanced and skilfully prepared. The waiting staff were knowledgeable and professional- providing information about the dishes suggesting condiments without the pretension that we have sometimes experienced in other high end restaurants. We have been coming to Polperro since it opened - attending events, giving gift vouchers to relatives for the accomodation, having wonderful picnics in the summer…. and each time is better than the last. Well done Polperro!

Last Christmas my partner's daughter & family had gifted us a $200 voucher for Polperro. It was my partner birthday so I booked for lunch with the idea of experiencing all that Polperro had to offer. WOW!! We were absolutely blow away with the creativity of the Head Chef and his three chefs that have different responsibilities; together they are creating a gastronomic experience like no other. We chose to have the accompanying wines which were a delight on their own. The attending waiters and waitresses were knowledgeable about the food they were serving and the wine we were drinking. They were confident and interesting individuals. The crowning glory was the setting; even on a cold wet Sunday afternoon still had a magic that was breathtaking. We will be back in summer to enjoy a casual lunch in the gardens under the shade of the trees or patio, then again maybe a picnic in the vineyard. Congratulations to all who own, create and serve at Polperro. Cheers Tess & Peter.

Ours was a special occasion restaurant visit to celebrate a birthday and we were blown away by the venue, food and service. Location is a beautifully located restaurant surrounded by ancient trees and sweeping views of northern slopes planted vines. The menu was fixed price five courses which were beautifully presented and nothing short of delectable. Notable were the exquisite variety of textures flavours each of which did not clash or dominate. Tables are well separated all with views and our service was attentive and efficient without being annoying. Birthday guest received a special edible message with his dessert. Would highly recommend a visit to this A1 restaurant.

We were looking forward to this lunch first time there which was a gift from our kids. The restaurant is nice and the views are spectacular but the food was quite disappointing. I read some reviews so we had high expecations after all the hype. The potato snack was so salty I couldnt eat it even though i like salty food. We had long waits between courses and some particular diners kept getting the food much earlier than the rest of the diners even though its a set menu. It was obvious that these patrons were known to some staff and they kept chatting to them whilst others had to wait for their food. Then when the food was finally out it was very small servings. The large course consisted of a small leg of duck mostly bones and the flavours were a hit and miss. We thought it was overrated compared to wineries in the area. Plenty of better restaurants in the area.

I've previously done the Wine Tasting before. But we did the Chef's Tasting Menu for Lunch on Saturday. It was absolutely outstanding. Everything about Polperro is fantastic. The Vineyard, the farm, the wood fires, gardens, the drink selection was great. We didn't have alot to drink here because we had been doing wine tastings and had more to go. But the Tasting Menu was well beyond the expectation, all ingredients were organic and farm fresh from their property, the gastronomy and presentation of all the dishes and flavours were botanical, fresh and devine. The staff were all incredibly friendly, and for everything we experienced it was great value for price per head. Thoroughly recommend a lunch here.

We celebrated our Anniversary at beautiful Polerro Restaurant and we were beyond grateful for the kind, considerate, friendly and helpful staff member Hannah who smiled at us with her friendly face and talked us through the experience on what we could expect and what we got was gorgeous, scrumptious dishes that kept coming at perfect intervals for over 2 wonderful hours. Hannah helped us with our wine selection Polperros Pino Noir, perfect with our lunch. We were lucky it was a sparkling sunny Winters day, it was warm and cosy inside, but was lovely to sit outside to enjoy the pretty surrounds. A must experience. Thank you

We were unsure about the degustation menu but were very pleasantly surprised - it was superb - the flavours were exquisite! Being locals we were keen to sample the wines and again were delighted with the 2019 '235' Pinot Noir. While it is a less affordable dining experience for some, it was well worth it. It's also hard to pin-point which of the staff was the best, they were all friendly, courteous and interested in providing a great experience for ourselves and those around us. The ambience and views are also special, we would gladly recommend Polperro and will return when we wish to celebrate another special occasion.
