We'd been wanting to try Port Phillip Estate dining room for some time. Between living in Danistan during WuFlu, closures, and the rest it took awhile but we finally got down there today. Less than an hour from Bayside, and massively exceeded expectations, especially the...SERVICE.
The food was excellent, but you can get excellent food at many places in Melbourne and around. It was inventive, but not so over the top like some menus that you can't even recognize or fathom WTF you are eating. It was A grade comfort food done with innovation. And with a beautiful view...
But it really was the service that will bring us back. A gentleman named Elliott who was a cross between sommelier, waiter, chef's envoy, maitre d', and everything else guided every table through the menu and shared what it was all about and what made it unique and answered questions before waiter/waitress took orders. Like every place in VIC there looked like it could have enjoyed a bit more staff because of shortages everywhere but everyone hustled and the room had beautiful measured service. And there wasn't one tiny detail that was overlooked in that regard.
One critique: The long broad windows are gorgeous but if you're not sitting alongside them, on a grey rainy day the rest of the room can feel a bit of glare looking across the room at them. It would be an improvement to slightly tint the windows and have stunning drop spotlights on each and every table to give a more sophisticated lighting for the Dining Room. That's our take on it. And it's a bit niggly but if you're looking to constantly improve and go from good to great to epic...well....
We didn't stop at the cellar door bar which looked GORGEOUS and not like some daggy woodshed that doubles as a cellar door for many wineries and we cannot wait to get back and try everything on the menu, and also try the accommodation.
If you haven't been overseas to top notch destinations you probably haven't experienced epic service (not to sound elitist but it hasn't been a hallmark of Australian hotels and restaurants which often hire backpackers and the like in lieu of professional servers), but the presentation and warmth of Elliot's virtual one-man show made us feel inimitably special, informed, and like a personal guest today. We hope it wasn't the exception and hopefully the rule of the land when we return.
It's not cheap, but the value was exceptional and if that's what it costs for A-grade staff than so be it.More
