Went with our two kids Australia Day. Service was great but for $170 we felt ripped off, the ribs had no meat at all just bones, i know ribs don't have heaps but we were literally eating marinated bones. Had to get two portions of pulled pork which was only a small lump of meat, mac cheese bland and no salt on the table to make it better. Sausage was amazing though. Won't be back better ribs elsewhere for same price including chips on the side.

This was our third visit to red gum and probably our last for a while. We had a group of 6 adults and our bill come to $280 and we all left feeling hungry. I’m all about share plates and platters etc but when you are paying $20 odd bucks for a slice of beef brisket and the same for a small serving of pulled pork, we could t help but feel ripped off and disappointed with the serving sizes especially for the price. Food is nice however just wouldn’t recommend going in bigger groups because you would need to order a lot to be satisfied. Service has also dropped, had to ask for extra forks twice and cancel a side that didn’t make it out after finishing all our food(which didn’t take long!) in the passed had been quite happy but will give it a miss for a while now I think! Much better value for money elsewhere

Spacious and rustic this is a family friendly restaurant. Interesting but limited range of food, its a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. While the food is tasty it's overpriced especially for the size of the servings. If you want a different bibs experience from the usual Aussie sausage sizzle give it a try. Good for groups and I liked the share plates.

Great eating experience! Food and service are fantastic. We have both traveled extensively in the US and the food here is up there with the best Southern BBQ we have eaten. All dishes were authentic in taste and appearance, and were served in a great atmosphere. A couple of the newcomers to the experience with us were a little underwhelmed by some of the dishes, but trust us, it is the real deal. Atmosphere was great - it is in a large, old engineering shed and the three BBQs look like boilers from some old steamship. Benches are hard so grab a cushion from the lounge if you softies like us. Very kid friendly with an enclosed lawn area as well as an indoor play spece with toys and drawing stuff.

Fantastic American-style BBQ restaurant in a strange barn-like room at the back of a petrol station. Decor and location are nothing of note, but the food is terrific. The pitmasters here really know how to smoke meats. The brisket, pulled pork, and sausage are as good as any I've had, as were the fried chicken and fried green tomatoes. The food comes very quickly. They also have a great range of beers on tap and a serviceable wine list. A poor option for vegos, but if you like American BBQ, try this place. Just be warned, the "feed me" menu at $75 per person is more than most individuals could eat. Share one or more of those and get some of the stuff that's not on the "feed me" such as the fried chicken, the beef ribs, and extra sides. I was disappointed they didn't offer pork ribs; I'm sure they would do a brilliant job with those. You can also buy their rubs and sauces at the checkout. Highly recommended.

We ate there today, a family table of 9, total cost $488.00. All food came to the table within 5 mins of ordering, all cold, after speaking with staff eventually, we were offered a replacement, staff seemed were surly - as if it was our fault or our expectations were too high. We left without eating dessert and paid the total bill -no discount for the inconvenience was offered and no apologies for serving cold food etc. overall experience very disappointing.

Dear Harpsden - this review was responded to on google and this is what was communicated there: Margie, your visit was really upsetting today for the junior member of staff whom you were quite rude to. The entire group’s food was replaced after your concerns were raised and the senior staff member explained that you would not find the meat ‘hot’ upon receipt a second time (low and slow is served warm or room temp). Your visit was communicated to management at end of day and it was felt that it was handled well on our end. We can only ask our staff to rectify any issues at the time (even if it means we lose money in the process). This was done and in the hopes that it would make your experience a great one. We ask in return that our staff are treated with kindness. Sometimes our best is just not good enough. We realise this and keep on, keepin on. Hope you enjoyed your public holiday.

We met friends at Red Gum BBQ on a Saturday morning - the large, high-ceilinged venue was pretty empty at first, but soon filled. Service was attentive and fast, servings generous by smokehouse standards, huge beer served in a jar was a novelty. Be aware that Red Gum is tucked behind a petrol station and is easy to miss, large as it is.

Our group ordered a few Pitmaster Selection meals...looked great on the plate and tasted quite good but the plate is very overpriced for what they give you and it is served with a slice of Tip Top bread...they could put something a bit more upmarket than a slice of white bread,it just didnt go with the dish. We were pleasantly surprised that our meal came with free flies....they were really really bad and we noticed several other tables were commenting on it also.I guess that will always be an issue when it is open to the outdoors Car parking is very difficult within the grounds of the restaurent so its pot luck if you get one and there is limited on-street parking. The staff were very good, the drinks cold but it is quite expensive for what you get

We visited this restaurant two years ago and had a wonderful meal - so were greatly looking forward to our return visit. However unfortunately the whole experience was very disappointing. We arrived at 12.20 for the first sitting of the day to be told that they were out of chicken ( although it could be ordered only as part of a more expensive tasting plate) and there were no ribs. It was a baking hot day and we were given one jug of water for 8 people and had to ask repeatedly for refills. The drinks order was mucked up and when the meals arrived the servings were tiny. ($70 for a plate which barely fed one person) Both the pulled pork, beans and cornbread were overly sweet and they no longer offered charred corn ( which was a standout last time). We felt ripped off and won’t be returning.

Unfortunately for diners in Australia, I assume most of these places rely on the idea that most haven't experienced the real thing, actual Texas or southern BBQ so what you get here is a small experience, at high prices. Perhaps it just doesn't work here, economically. I suggested we go here after a game of golf with some friends on a trip to the Mornington Peninsula which everyone thought was a great idea, and it was however, when the food arrived it was a little disappointing. One of the guys actually thought it was an entrée...he also has experienced the real deal in America. We all ordered a specific meat item and side(s) which was collectively put on the table to share but, we needed more when we had finished so had to then order another "feed me" menu item. Given we didn't drink much, I think there was 6 beers in total, the bill for 4 people and drinks was almost $300....that's a fairly big lunch bill by most people's standard without a bunch of beers.

What a huge disappointment. Brisket was dry. 'Pulled' Pork was sloppy mush. Chook was edible. Cornbread was delicious. Other sides were decent but its hard to get excited about slaw. We didn't try the sausages but they're $12 each. All the food was hugely overpriced for the meagre portion sizes. Overstaffed with too many 'teenage waiters' standing around chatting to each other trying to avoid eye contact. This place is clearly badly run. Was it the Managers night off? As an avid home smoker and someone who has visited a lot of smokehouses this was the worst. I cannot fathom how they have such good ratings online but can only assume any positive ratings are from people who don't know anything about BBQ or they're paid reviewers by some PR company. Don't waste your money. Someone should seriously set up a decent place down the road.

This restaurant in and old truck workshop is decorated with attention to creating a relaxed informal atmosphere. Large tables for group or may share with other diners. Good area for young children to play. We sampled a range of the American style BBQ food and all enjoyed our meals, although size of mains small. We had ordered several sides to share and I would recommend that. Service is very efficient. Locally brewed beer available. Overall somewhat pricey for a casual family meal

I was looking forward to dining here but the experience was underwhelming. We arrived at 12 and were told we had to leave by 2:30. When we ordered we were told they had run out of ribs (@12:15!!!). The brisket was tastless and so soft you could eat it without teeth, it tasted like it had been reheated. The sausage was OK, the chicken wings had a hot tastless sauce on them and did not appear to have been marinated or even cooked till tender. The Mac & cheese was OK, Coleslaw was OK, cheeseburgers were pretty awful, they seemed more like a rissole that was baked and kept warm than a burger. The price was a bit over the top. 3 children under 12, 2 cheeseburgers, 1 chicken strips, 1 sundae, 2 brownies and drinks $90+. I got the feeling that the place was operating beyond it's capabilities. Fine dining prices for average fare, I won't be visiting again.

Ate here last week, food was tasty but way over priced was not happy to pay $23.00 for 2 slices of beef and they were not big slices. This did not include sides just the beef. I feel it is a bit of a rip off, would not go again.

Located about an hour south of Melbourne, Red Gum BBQ is amongst wineries and beautiful countryside. I really didn’t have much expectations because I hadn’t heard of the place but I was completely blown away. They are running three massive offset smokers. We ordered the “Happy as A Pig” platter and bowl of chili for two. The meats are all local sourced. I visited and reviewed 100’s of BBQ places, across the globe. The brisket at Red Gum was a top 5 for me, maybe even top three. They serve thick cut slices of brisket with a great smoke ring and very tasty bark. The meat was tender and incredibly flavorful. Quite an accomplishment out of local grass feed beef! I am not a big fan of smoked chicken, usually relegated to a “filler or make weight” meat on a typical sampler platter. THIS a is not the case at Red Gum. Juicy and flavorful, the chicken was a perfect match to their Alabama white sauce. I don’t want to forget the cornbread. Red Gum goes the cake-type route for cornbread. It was sweet and delicious. The staff “PIT CREW” was super attentive, helpful and patiently answered all my questions. They also have a great selection of local beers and wines. I always drink an orange soda with my BBQ. They had Fanta, so we were all good. The bowl of chili, well. It came out with the platter and by the time we finished the platter, we were completely stuffed. I tired a few bites. It was good but cold. My fault, so plan accordingly if a huge chili fan. Great area, attentive and helpful pit crew, simply outstanding BBQ. I can’t wait to go back. I am jealous that locals can go all the time.
