We were in Kyneton on a drizzly, cold winter's day, not 100% sure if we wanted to persevere with finding somewhere to eat or whether we'd head back to where we are staying in Castlemaine. As we approached Home Grown, we could smell the food so we checked out the menu in the window. There were several options that appealed to us so in we went. I wasn't wildly hungry so I opted for the warmed winter veg salad and my partner had the pancakes. The food itself was fresh and truly delicious, but what won us over even more was the friendly, helpful attitude of the young woman who served us. She readily offered us variances for our meals such as adding chicken or goats cheese to my salad, serving it either warmed or cold depending on my preference, and, as I wasn't very hungry, having a half serving - which turned out to be perfect. She happily switched cream for ice cream for my partner's pancakes. Even better is the story of the cafe, with much of the fresh food being grown on the owner's nearby farm, so very fresh and low food miles. Another great find in a lovely little town not far out of Melbourne. We're very keen to go back and try something else from the menu!

This place serves consistently fresh quality delicious food. Cannot recommend it more highly. This morning I had smash avo on dark sour dough with a fantastic cashew and corriander pesto, chili oil, bean sprout salad and poached egg. Scrumptious!

3 of us visited this lovely little cafe on Piper St recently. I was glad that we had booked a table for lunch a day or so earlier. Friendly, efficient staff, Delicious food, happy cheerful surrounds. We enjoyed the cafe's delicious Sri Lankan mixed vegetable curry and curry puff combo, a slice of Pear & Almond cake with good coffee. If spicy food wasn't your choice there were plenty of other delicious, healthy options. We hope to be back ASAP. Thank you to the staff. Jennifer,Juris & Chris.

Ordered 2 poached eggs, bacon, mushrooms and avo. No toast. Order came with no bacon. No apology! Eventually got some anaemic looking, undercooked bacon that I couldn’t eat. Then charged me $33.00. I’m sorry I know hospitality has had a hard time of late hence the reason I am trying to support small local business but at that price and the attitude of the staff I won’t be visiting there again. On a positive note the eggs were cooked perfectly so whoever cooked those should be congratulated.

Great to hear you loved the poached eggs, Joanne! Sorry you didn't at first get the bacon and there was no apology for that - this is unusual as our staff are usually very friendly, as so many of our other reviews attest to. We use premium ingredients such as eggs produced on our own organic mini-farm and fed daily organic greens, and free-range bacon produced by local artisan supplier Oakwood Small goods - this needs to be reflected in our prices. Believe us, we do long hours in our cafe and make very little income from it despite it being fairly busy, so we are clearly reasonably priced for the service we offer. Thanks for your support of small local business, and if you give us another go you should generally find our food excellent and our staff very friendly.

This place came highly recommended by the locals, so we booked it for lunch on Father's Day when we had friends visiting from Melbourne. The cafe had run out of the two key lunch dishes (that they are famous for) by 1pm. It's a limited menu. Surely they should have planned and made extra knowing that it was Father's Day and they were nearly fully booked? Apparently not. Then food was 40 minutes coming. It is a small kitchen and there were only two chefs. The kitchen is too small for the number of tables. We had a small child with us and had to undertake an emergency dash for additional food to give her while we waited. People who had made a reservation walked out when they heard the wait times. While I liked my dish (which was my second choice), others were not happy with their meals, and felt it was overpriced for what you get. I recommend going elsewhere - like Social Foundry, which has great food and service.

Coffee was good, which was a great start. The greens galore dish was a lovely dish, but the potato rosti was a bit too large so the potato in the middle of the rosti was a bit undercooked. But other than that, it was a very tasty dish. The bacon & egg bun looked great, but my partner thought the roll was too healthy (too many grains) he’s used to a trashy white roll, I thought it looked yummy. Sweet treats looked delicious too.

Today we visited Kyneton at 2pm for lunch on our Wedding Aniversary. We tried 2 cafes whose kitchens had closed and were directed to try Home Grown on Piper. How lucky and blessed were we. The food was deliciious and healthy and cooked to perfection from the heart,. The owner Gunilla, is very warm and welcoming and an absolute delight. We look forward to returning for more culinary sensations. Robbie and Leanne Barker, ,Hepburn Springs .

We went to Home Grown for brunch and it's fast becoming one of our Go To places in Kyneton. Fantastic coffee and great service, with a nice little selection of pantry goods to purchase from local providers as well. I had the Pumpkin Smash which was absolutely amazing, with poached eggs cooked to perfection. Highly recommended!

Service was poor, our two toasties took 30 mins to cook with no other customers before us so my husband asked where they were and got the rudest response the young girl told him to sit back down and wait ! No apologies from anyone for the wait time , what took them so long? Washing dishes ? Who knows but the team were unapologetic and rude and left a bad taste in our mouths. We will definitely not go back .

My family and I made a visit to Home Grown on Piper during our short stay in Kyneton, and are already planning our next visit there. Every single person loved their dish (five different dishes!!), the service was wonderful and the feel of the place was so homely. Coming from a Sri Lankan background, the Sri Lankan-inspired dishes were so authentic and gave us a little taste of home. Thank you to Gunilla, Rob and the whole team, we’ll definitely be back!!

Called in on Melbourne Cup Day for the first time since lockdown ended - we booked a table because I knew they’d be busy. So pleased to see the place absolutely humming. The staff were getting smashed at lunch time but they kept on smiling and delivering great service as always. I reviewed them before but wanted to write again to say how fantastic they’ve been all through the trials and tribulations of umpteen forced restrictions. When others all around them have stayed closed because they couldn’t make the capacity constraints work, Home Grown has opened whenever possible. They deserve to now reap the rewards for their perseverance and efforts. And, of course, nothing has changed: the food, the coffee, the service were excellent as always and my wife (as an egg eating, non-dairy, otherwise vegan) has plenty of choice. Well done guys, I hope you had a restful evening after such a full-on lunch service.

What a thoughtful review, Simon! We really appreciate your regular support and how much you clearly care about our cafe and its success. The lockdowns have been a tough time of course and we're so glad you noticed our efforts to continue our service through them. It's great to be back to full service now. See you again soon in the cafe! 😊

A little gem in Central Victoria, Home Grown is a definite “return to”. We had much deliberation over an extensive and interesting menu, finally settling on the Pumpkin Smash (spicy) and Mushroom Ragu, both delicious options. Highly recommended in Piper Street, for great food (lots of GF etc options) and friendly staff. Thanks for a lovely lunch experience. Milton and Lorraine

Just love the friendly, family feel of this delightful Cafe. Great coffee and a varied menu that changes with the seasons and caters for all tastes. The varity of home made cakes are a temptation you can't resist.

We had the Vegan big brekkie and from one foodie to another this dish was outstanding. It is a rarity to come across a cook who can create and coordinate flavours to this high level. Cannot wait to get back and reorder the dish and it makes a drive from Melbourne very worthwhile. Ps I’m a carnivore and was with my vegan sister. Almost converted me! Give it a try you won’t be disappointed. Therese
