About
Matilda Bay is Australia’s original craft brewery, founded in Fremantle in 1983. The first beers were brewed from a micro-brewery installed inside the Sail & Anchor Hotel, some of which quickly become iconic and award winning craft beers such as Redback Original (Australia’s first wheat beer), Dogbolter Dark Lager, Alpha Pale Ale, Bohemian Pilsner, and the quirky Beez Neez. Matilda Bay lit the match for Australian beer drinkers, and the flame burns stronger by the day, laying the foundation for all to follow, in what has become a thriving and globally admired craft beer scene. After a long journey across the country, we are now calling Victoria’s pristine Yarra Valley, home, where you can visit

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When we ordered a porterhouse steak ($42) the lady who took our order kindly reminded us of the Wednesday special of a porterhouse and pint of beer for $30, so that’s what we ordered. The steak was good. The smoked baby back ribs ($34) had...a nice sauce and the flavour was good, but they were not as tender as they should have been after cooking low and slow as ribs should be cooked, and after eating the six small ribs that were 90% bone, I was still hungry. When I ordered the ribs I asked what came with them. I was told nothing. But they came with red cabbage, so that was nice. Since I was told nothing came with them I ordered the heirloom tomatoes with raw shallot and caper vinegarette ($14) which was very nice. I didn’t pay attention when paying by card and one of the servers later came and told me that I had been mistakenly charged for two porterhouse steaks, one for $42 and the one on special for $30. The lady who took the order obviously didn’t pay attention either. They were unable to refund the overpayment to my credit card but gave me cash instead, which was ok. And at least they caught the overcharging mistake. Perhaps a little more staff training and supervision is in order. Not sure if we’ll go there again.More

Nice brewery setting, modern and spacious. Food and drinks good but rather of fast food quality level. Service rapid and efficient.

Beers were ok and reasonably priced but it’s a massive venue and hard to get any sort of vibe from it. They seemed massively understaffed for a Saturday night and the team they did have seemed heavily weighted towards the inexperienced. We chose to drink...up, walk on and eat elsewhere.More

The staff was a bit root and not helpfull in helping us getting the correct food which ended up with us getting the wrong food. 5 min after getting the wrong order we were not allowed to order a new one and another 2 min...later we were kicked out of the restaurant before being able to complete the dinner. We ended up having to go to another place and get take away. Horrible experience. Worst money ever spendMore

We were recently lucky enough to be taken here for some tastings. Great beers and awesome customer service. A special mention to Jake who gave us a good overview of the beers. Cheers 🍻🫶

Only one wine on offer - $16 a glass. Not great wine either. Decided not to eat here; very sad as I was expecting there to be more on offer in Healesville but we have been here a week, haven't had a decent coffee so...far and haven't eaten out at all. ☹️More

A pretty great brewery in beautiful Healesville 🍁🌿 The beers are nice. I tried their red back wheat beer and a delish brown ale on tap. Refreshing and high quality in taste and balance of flavour. Then had a couple of canned craft beers from...Aus too and I tried the passionfruit and guava sour beer 🤩 They are in the Yarra valley so of course they have some good local and not local wines there too. So I got a glass of Riesling Freak’s No.3 Riesling. Such a big fan of Riesling freak, they make some of the best Aussie Riesling around. Then tried the scotch egg served with a mustard sauce with a Rosé which is from Dominique Portet winery in the Yarra valley and again, this is one of the wineries that makes awesome Rosé. I ordered the mussels and matched them with a Prosecco from Dalz Otto 👌🏼 perfect! Pretty good food here. The brewery is a nice big spacious building with full view of the brewing equipment and big beer barrels. It has a huge oval shaped comfortable bar and also many tables and a fireplace to add warmth and atmosphere. They also playing nice music 🎵 Thanks!More

Service was wonderful, helpful friendly and professional. We not only had recommendations for our flight of beers but were given great customer service when deciding on a take away pack. Beers were refreshing and my husband found some that was to his very hoppy liking.

The high ceilings don’t make for a great atmosphere but I imagine they’re necessary for the brewing. It’s sure dusty up there. Service was really good, friendly and quick . Food was very tasty too. I didn’t like the music when we arrived but it...got a little better later. Plenty of parking on site .More

Lunch was good but not great. The baby back pork ribs (six for $29) had a nice flavour and were quite meaty, but were not fall-off-the-bone tender like slow-smoked meat should be. The cauliflower starter ($10) and bowl of chips ($9) were both tasty, as...was the Giant Steps rose’ ($58/bottle). We may dine there again but if we do we’ll order something other than any of the smoked meat dishes. The service was friendly and efficient.More

Hard to see what the negative fuss is about from some reviewers. I was there New Year’s Day. No problem getting a table. Friendly service. Beer and local wine was reasonably priced. I ordered pizza, which was excellent. Thin base and a little char from...the wood fire. Yum!More

A noisy and vibrant place to eat, the beer hall is good for a group or larger party. If you would like to converse, choose one of the other tables.

We dropped in to have a beer and a pizza here on a Sunday night. The only dark beer they had on tap was their Dogbolter, which we did enjoy. Place was a bit quiet and the pizzas only looked ok, so we went elsewhere.

Great environment, one of our meals was scrumptious and value for money . The other two were expensive , my tiger squid was so salty I had to ask for bread to be able to eat it . The meatballs were an entree size. Also..., I requested some bread and was brought focaccia with a very large quenelle of butter and was charged $12 . Service lacked enthusiasm, our meals all came at different times .More
