We are regular patrons at Cognoscenti. The food and wine are always amazing. The wood fired oysters and the cheesecake are particularly amazing.

Really delicious food, great service, cosy atmosphere. The 1/2 price oysters were super fresh tasting, the Prosecco lovely. The prawn risotto was a surprise - like a plate of melted cheese with rice and prawn pieces, but it was delicious. The crime brûlée was nice,...but the oysters and risotto outshone it.More

Do yourself a favour and book this fantastic restaurant. My partner and I went here on Sunday for our anniversary lunch, WOW!!! We had the Sunday lunch and it was amazing. The quality of the food that is served is perfect. They also surprised us...with a plate saying, Happy Anniversary with 2 beautiful friands, so unexpected but so much appreciated and they were delicious! The staff are so friendly and very helpful with recommendations in the wine department. Can’t wait for our next visit! Thanks for a beautiful meal..More

This is a special little place. Booked for a Thursday night and we were pleased with the warm welcome and ambiance. Services was impeccable, snacks (pita bread and croquettes) were delicious, entree (wood fired leeks) one of the best things I’ve eaten, main (lamb shank...special and roasted pumpkin) were generous and tasty. Very impressed with their drinks offering including the delicious zero alcohol drink NON 3, my husband enjoyed a Pinot and Shiraz and he said both were good. Great service, food, beverages and very good value will have us adding this to the date night rotation.More

An excellent restaurant! Wonderful, attentive, genuine service. A creative menu, that maintains the essence of great French cuisine. A wine list that showcases the best of small Victorian and French producers. We dine here regularly and will continue to, as it is simply great!

This is an upmarket type of restaurant in Belgrave and provides efficient service, friendly staff and enjoyable meals (almost a la carte) with probably just the right amount on the plate but has you wanting more. Alcohol can range from low 20s to almost $500...a bottle. That aside you can't complain about the taste of what is on your plate. Interior is quite rustic pleasant with a warm relaxed feel about the place. It was a full house on our visit and I would think most people had to book in advance. The Humpty Doo Barramundi meal was probably the best barramundi I've eaten but feel it might have been better with a little more on the plate. The twice baked goats cheese souffle was not too rich but feel it might have been better with some salad to go with it. I thought in terms of value it was better than average but it was not very good either. A little more would have sealed the deal I think. In saying that I enjoyed what was before us.More

Special occasion, wedding anniversary where to?? being locals and return guests, based on previous experience, only one place, Cognosenti food and wine, greeted by friendly wait staff, welcomed with friendly not pushy service, we enjoyed a glass of French bubbles and for starters mt zero...olives and the duck liver parfait and seared flinders scallops, what a start!! Mains creamy prawn risotto, the best I have ever had and crispy skin barramundi, and a side of delicious green beans. The wine list local and also boutique, we chose the Riley Harrison Black Hound, superb accompaniment, and stellar service in particular from Brylie, capped off a wonderful night. Highly recommend you travel out to Belgrave as this place is an absolute winner all round.More

Having dined at Donovan's Melbourne on a few occasions, when I read that some of the former Donovan's team members had opened a restaurant in Belgrave, I decided to book a table for us and drive up to the Dandenongs for a Sunday roast. The...call was answered very professionally, and an immediate confirmation was sent, so I knew that we were in the hands of professionals. We arrived on time and were met by the maître d'hôtel. I felt a fleeting sense of profiling when I told the Maitre d I had a booking. A brief moment of hesitation. But we were shown to our table. A waitress brought us the menus and the wine list, and she was charming, and throughout our stay at the restaurant, she displayed a high level of professionalism, knowledge of the food and a friendly and highly customer-focused demeanour. We have always been delighted at Donovan's, and we commented that the high level of service and training is displayed at Cognoscenti too. There were only three tables, including ours, when we came, but after a while, more people arrived. The maître d'hôtel went to the different tables and had conversations, and we also could not avoid one table speaking very aggressively to him about some issue. The maître d'hôtel spent quite a bit of time calming down that person, which we believe he did well as we realised that the situation was resolved. We noticed that the maître d'hôtel was proposing various cocktails to different guests, and he was meticulously preparing those cocktails. We had some started and then ordered the Sunday Roast, which the waitress was taking care of. We were also curious to know what some of those cocktails were. All this time (and for the more than an hour that we spent), the maître d'hôtel not once approached our table. Not once did he check how we were doing with the meal, while the entire time, we saw that he went from table to table, speaking to the guests, offering suggestions, and serving cocktails and wine. He was the perfect host! Somehow, we could not avoid realising that we were deliberately ignored as ours was the ONLY table that the maître d'hôtel did not approach even ONCE! The owners or management could check their CCTV so there will be evidence of our genuine discomfort of discrimination. I have been in situations where we have been profiled and discriminated so this is certainly not the first time. We feel genuinely disappointed that we took the trouble to travel that distance and did indeed find the food and the waitress perfect, but only to be made feel that we were not in the right place; unwelcome! When I settled the bill with the waitress and we were leaving, it was even more apparent that the maître d'hôtel purposely ignored us without even a word of appreciation for our business. We regularly go out to good restaurants, entertain often and have travelled extensively and experienced great chefs and cuisines. So, naturally, we were not at Cognoscenti, ignorant or without any means of paying for our lunch. As much as we liked the food, we left with a bad taste in our mouths ( pardon the pun) and will never return.More

What an amazing experience. Some of the best food we have ever eaten. The service was faultless and the staff so friendly. It was my partners birthday and they even bought out a little cake with a candle. The wood fired leeks were to die...for and the lamb so tender, it melted in the mouth. My partner had the fish and loved it I f I could give 10 stars I would!More

This place has been under new ownership since the start of 2022 and old reviews should be ignored. There is also a duplicate listing that Trip Advisor doesn’t pick up. This is a fantastic restaurant with great service, great wine list and delicious food. I...thought there weren’t any fine dining restaurants in the Hills for dinner but I was dead wrong. We loved our visit, the staff were delightful and we will be back. In fact the conversation the next morning is what dish we will chose next time!More

We visited this relatively new restaurant/wine bar and were blown away. The ambience was the first impression and it was delightfully attractive. The food was absolutely out of this world and well, well ahead of what has come to be generally expected in the Dandenongs....Very high quality wine list. The owner was only too pleased to let us taste before ordering a glass of untried wine. I have not had food as good for a long time. The BEST cheesecake I’ve ever had. I’ve had plenty in my time! 5 minutes from home beats going long distances to get great food. Thanks for the experience!!More

What a beautiful surprise and experience. Just booked thinking it would be a casual dinner. We both absolutely loved every dish. The delicious home made croquettes and the beautifully grilled scallops were a bliss and only made us look forward to the mains. The wine...list has a great selection, we loved our choice. We then had the pork belly and the flank steak and had a big smile on our face. The service was friendly and impeccable. We will certainly be back to try some of the other dishes!More

Delightful service, beautiful food, well chosen wine list with a very nice waiter who knew about the wine. The scallops were particularly good and the clams an interesting dish. The belly pork succulent, the chips will make us discontent with any other chips. The cheesecake...with confit stone fruits was unbelievable. How did they make it so light and lovely. What a fantastic find in Belgrave.More
