Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were meant to enjoy a get together with old friends. This was the worst and overpriced food for a simple pub lunch in our lives. Schnitzels , fish and parma’s were all overcooked and the chips undercooked and white. Never again and this peeves...me as we are locals.More

We dined at Tanswell’s Hotel, Beechworth. A lovely lady,Ursula greeted us. Our meal was delicious-we both had eggplant Parma and a beetroot and orange salad. The service was prompt and professional. The interior of the hotel was of bygone days but delightful. We would definitely...dine there again. BRETA CMore

An excellent meal of tender baked venison neck and a succulent roasted aubergine followed by a trio of delicious home-made ice creams - kiwi fruit, pear and vanilla. Have been before and this visit didn't disappoint. Highly recommended.

Heard the menu now include a parmigiana so wanted to test it out. Sensational is the outcome, awsome salad and fries included. Others had Yabbies and Lamb cutlets, beetroot and orange with goats cheese that were amazing. Get on down here for dinner, you won’t...be disappointed!!!! The old time surrounds, cosy fires, friendly staff are a bonus 🤠More

Excellent food, lovely staff and a wonderful atmosphere. I would go out of my way to eat here again. Local produce prepared with obvious passion and attention to detail. Also a very extensive wine list, great music.

Food was nothing sort of awful. Not one of the four of us to find anything nice to say about the food. The staff were amazing

As a local we probably eat at the pub around 4 times a year out last visit was March 2023 and the food was great. Now it’s showing signs that the winter lull has not been shaken off, the food was disappointing. What looked like...a restricted midweek (we’d) menu, in our group of 4, 3 ordered the same meal, Angus Pie. It was more of a shepherds pie like dish with mainly potatoes, no crust and no discernible traces of meat. There probably was mince meat in the dish but it was so finely mushed it was almost soup like. I had fish and chips which was also underwhelming. The batter was too thick and oily for the narrow sliver of fish. We will visit the venue again, in the summer months, because like so many hospitality venues in country Victoria, staff changes are an ongoing reality post-covid. Chefs come and go like a specials menu, and quality is a lottery over a longer period. At the moment it’s a “no” from me.More

Ordered fish and chips. 28.00 for a handful of chips and a small piece of fish. No salad. About a 12.00 kids size feed. Looking around the table showed that they obviously cater to the tourist market. I.e. they wouldn't get many repeat customers. Staff...are friendly, at least that is a positiveMore

Rode from Melbourne to Beechworth via Yea, Mansfield, Milawa. Arrived late, dropped the bike and bag at The Old Priory and jogged over to Tanswell's to get some blood back in the extremities. Managed to lock in a table for one in the dining room...between a fully booked dance card, headed to the main bar to grab a cold fresh pot and find the fire. Main bar was alive with music, laughter, travelers talking about their day spent in the incredible Beechworth area. Met some great characters, lucky behind the bar and 'benny loves his mumma' for a beer between sets on the stage. Highly recommend.More

Thanks to the most accommodating staff at the Commercial Hotel for squeezing us in for dinner over the long weekend when we didn’t have a reservation. Rather then just say no and turn us away (as 2 other pubs did), they found a solution to...see us seated, fed and out before the next booking arrived. Great service, great atmosphere and a wonderful meal to boot. Highly recommended.More

Having spent a week travelling in country NSW and Victoria, this restaurant felt like a real find. I had the venison, which was great and very rich. The fig creme brulee for dessert was also nice. This was a slow weeknight, so got to sit...near the fire and service was very quick. Definitely a step above the 'pub meals' we had eaten on the rest of the trip.More

Rooms are clean and good value but unfortunately bands are playing on the weekends. It is impossible to sleep until the extremely loud music stops. They play in the bar directly under the rooms and don't stop until 11.30.

Lovely vibe in the heart of Beechworth. We sat in the sun streaming in the front bar by the fire and enjoyed local wines. Well kept hotel worth a visit
