The menu at The Ox and Hound Bistro was so inviting rather than restricting myself to my usual 2 courses, I ate 3! Miss Piggy indeed! All delicious - from the pumpkin soufflé to the roast Millawa chicken in white wine and mushroom sauce to...the honey pannacotta with lemon sorbet and honeycomb. And don't forget the delicious house made bread. And the creamy potato mash. And the 2 glasses of bubbles. The service was friendly and efficient. I'd recommend anyone visiting the delightful town of Beechworth to make a booking and see for yourself.More

Dinner while staying in Beechworth over the weekend. Started with the Duck liver Parfait and the Butter roasted pear & radicchio, pickled daikon salad. The former chronically under seasoned, lacked any flavour impact and had a surprisingly insubstantial mouthfeel. The accompanying brioche also needed salt...or maybe just a reflection of the general under seasoning. The salad was also both flat and given the ingredients ,was surprisingly bland. It also lacked cohesion and integration. Pastas a bit more successful. The chestnut and rabbit fettuccine a great combination while the Cavatelli with garlic, chilli, cauliflower, raisin, pinenut, and herbed breadcrumbs also worked, though the former again needed the salt shaker and the latter both salt and more oil. The Baby cos lettuce with a mustard & French tarragon dressing a disappointment. Unbalanced, too sweet dressing ...tasted the mustard but no sign of of the tarragon's anise flavour. Bread was a disgrace...worst excuse for a baguette we've encountered for ages. Decent, fairly priced and locally oriented wine list. Service hit and miss ranging from pleasant and cordial to brusque and cursory. Melbourne prices so no bargain to be had here... not unfairly priced however. Appropriate food rating between average and poor.......More

After consecutive nights of set menus in Canberra we were so very happy to have booked The Ox and Hound in Beechworth on our way back to Melbourne. My husband and I shared a chestnut fettuccine with braised wild rabbit and a duck liver parfait...for entree. For main course we ordered beautifully boned whole local trout served with sautéed baby fennel with sides of creamy potato mash and broccoli. Dessert was their signature honey panna cotta served with lots of other lovely bits and bobs. For our wine we chose a local Willem Kurt Chardonnay, being the wine style of the area. As we enjoyed this most delicious, simple and refined meal we felt sorry for tall the hopeful diners that were turned away at the door as this small venue is booked out. Take head; if you’re keen to eat here … book in advance!More

It has been some years since we first discovered this wonderful restaurant. After a long break from any eating out during the Covid-19 years it was wonderful to be back eating such superb food. Our meal could not be faulted: everything was presented artfully, tasted...wonderful, combined disparate flavours in a complex and exciting way, and was well balanced. The service was timely, relaxed and efficient, with a touch of sardonic humour. One needs to book well ahead as this restaurant is quite popular, with good reason. The wine list is excellent bit if there is any negative point to be made it might be that the markup on the wine is a little high. If you are to be in Beechworth, dinner here is a must.More

One of us has the trout as a main, the other the eye filet. Both superb. For entrée, one had king prawns, beautifully and tastily garnished, the other rabbit fetticcini -- truly tasty. The service was excellent: helpful and cheerful. The chef is obviously outstanding,...also bakes his own delicious bread.More

Very enjoyable meal. I had the tuna orchette, which was very tasty. The chicken with grapes and verjuice was excellent. The combination of sweet grapes and verjuice combined in a really great sauce. The panacotta was superb but I was less taken with the lemon...curd ice cream.More

Absolutely sensational meal. The Harrietville trout was totally deboned with surgical precision leaving the most succulent tasteful pink flesh that melted in your mouth. The entrees and deserts are home made and delicious particularly the pannacotta with lemon curd ice cream. Friendly prompt service and...a delightful ambiance made for a memorable culinary experience. This is by far the best restaurant in Beechworth and probably North East Victoria.More
