My wife and I had dinner at The Provenance. There is only a set menu of 18 small dishes, almost all of them were absolutely wonderful! However, the amaro granita roasted peaches were just OK, not bad for 18 dishes!
This meal allowed us to try many dishes that we would normally avoid, there are no worries about having a lot of food served up and not liking it!
Service was great and nothing was rushed, allowing us to savour every delicious mouthful.
We hope to return to Beechworth so we can enjoy this meal again!

An exquisite evening of delicate flavours created by a master. A fine dining experience that will remain in our food memory for a long time to come. Each course was expertly explained by our delightful waiter and paired with wine from the local area. A restaurant for special occasions not to be missed

This well-established restaurant is well worth a detour, as they say. Located in a fine old bank building, the ambiance is somewhat austere but the food is fantastic. Heavy with Japanese influence, the fixed menu comes in three waves of six small dishes on bento trays followed by a dessert spread. A great wine list, both bottles and by the glass plus the proprietors own unique range of amaros and digestifs. Expensive.

Simple attention-to-detail tweaks are desperately needed here. While the food itself is adventurous with several great surprise packets, everything else here just misses the mark in particular the service which is uber clinical, pretentious and not at all warm, welcoming or special. This was my second visit and the experience was the same as previously. If you don't mind dropping over $1k for a party of 4 with minimal service, an uninviting atmosphere, and being rushed out the door for the next table, then this is the place for you, otherwise leave it be.....

Destination restaurants in regional Victoria are relatively rare.
An excellent and imaginative blending of Japanese and Australian elements in this ambitious degustation menu. Great ingredients, all technically well handled, so
would happily rate the food as excellent.
Quality, fairly priced and locally oriented wine list.
Lovely and elegant dining room.
This however, is a poster child for poor service/ambience/host engagement torpedoing an otherwise quality offering.
The food was great and the Savaterre pinot we chose was exceptional but the experience left us feeling a little flat.
No sense of welcome or engagement and relatively perfunctory service...all a bit cold and clinical. As noted,no real welcome and after paying the bill, left to wander out into the night.
Contrast against, say, The Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld, at a similar price point where the staff are guest focused and there's a sense of occasion appropriate to the experience.
Several other issues. As mentioned the wine list is fine but the offered wine pairing on the night not so much...stick with the list.
We stayed in the restaurant's accommodation which my wife will review in detail, but again, compared to other similar establishments it was both over priced and miss-described as "luxury" accommodation.
A notable lack of attention to detail....gratingly noisy sliding doors and clearly broken towel rails just not good enough at plus $300 per night.
Some way to go before we could recommend this to others.

The food in this restaurant is undoubtedly interesting and refined, taking some unusual experimental turns in its Japanese palette.
In this beautiful historic town it is lovely to see a destination restaurant of this calibre. I'm pleased that most people appear to love it.
You can feel the BUT coming....
We love a degustation menu and we love the matched wines and the theatre that goes with it. We have eaten at a lot of great degustation restaurants around the world or just in marvellous Melbourne.
The prices here are not some sort of country bargain nor should they be but the whole package lacks generosity. The service is not so much coolly professional as perfunctory, with a degustation meal the description of the food by the server is part of the joy. The wine matches are local, which is fine but at this price point they are very ungenerous and somewhat uninspiring. I would absolutely not recommend the wine match, just pick something off the menu yourself.
We had eaten a degustation meal with matched wines in Melbourne just the week prior and the contrast for us was stark.
I really had seen dining at this restaurant to be one of the highlights of our four days in Beechworth, it disappointed.

I am not sure what they are trying to achieve with the food but it is a poor attempt at Japanese! The food was very average. I doubt if there is a Japanese cook anywhere in the operation! At $150 per person for food they are in the big league and must deliver. They failed!

We had dinner and stayed overnight, the hospitality from Michael was fantastic. Rooms were spotless and every amenity provided, breakfast generous and fresh. Dinner in the restaurant was something else. Every dish, and there was 15, thoughtful, unique and interesting and above all else tasted delicious. Fantastic overall experience!

My wife and I dined here for our anniversary. We had been to this restaurant nearly 20 years ago when it was The Bank and a lot has changed since then.
The meal is a fixed tasting menu with a variety of Japanese-inspired dishes using local ingredients. As usual with a tasting menu, many of the dishes were things I would never consider ordering a la carte, but those items often turned out to be the highlights. I generally avoid mushrooms and tofu but the mushroom tofu dish was fantastic!
Every course included flavours that were new to me and every course was presented beautifully on a wooden tray, with elegant little bowls.
Each dish is quite small, but after 18 of them (and 4 glasses of wine) we were stuffed - and quite glad that we were staying at their attached accommodation.

The menu we had on our night was great but can be better. Every item tasted delicious but it was perhaps too chef oriented. To me, its about show casing the chef’s techniques and knowledge of flavours without giving too much consideration on what the individual experience might be at the end of the evening.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening as we have travelled a fair bit before COVID and we appreciate how the chef was giving everything to put together what he thinks is the best. Based on some of the previous reviews however, it may be translated into arrogance instead, which is a shame.
If you have been to Japan and enjoy your experience or if you haven’t but want to have a taste on what it may be like, this is the right place to be.

The food was imaginative and enjoyable, but I want to know what is it with Victorian restaurants offering the options of (a) tap water or (b) fizzy tap water? Charging $8 per person for carbonated tap water and serving it with a meal of this calibre is shabby and cheap. I can get bottled italian or french water at my local cafe in Armadale for that much per bottle, what makes restaurants (including this one) think its OK to serve up sub standard in a glass and charge for it? At this end of the market no one is going to blink at the cost of a bottle of water, so this is all about profit margin.
Speaking of charging, I'm happy to pay ~$550 here for a meal and wine for two in the expectation that the produce supply chain and staff treatment is ethical - why then do they solicit a tip? It's such a scam - tipping in america supports staff on US$7 per hour, what excuse do we have in Australia? Should soliciting for a tip be an indication that the staff are underpaid or overworked? I will ensure I ask this next time...
the real reason I'm going to score this restaurant harshly is the absence of a matched wine pairing with their degustation :(

One of the best meals we’ve had anywhere.
While the name sounds French, the menu leans more towards Japan, with a $150 set menu of 4 courses, each containing multiple small dishes.
With 18 items to taste, some are better than others, but there are enough original, standout flavours here to make this a meal you will long remember.
A single oyster was sublime, mushroom tofu is something I’d never choose but it was a taste sensation, the braised daikon and braised and grilled octopus with nori jam wonderful and the clam dashi was awesome.
I won’t describe every dish here, but the standard of the food, the service and the wine choices never failed.
It’s worth making a special trip to Beechworth just to dine here, but get in quick as they only open Friday to Monday.
There’s pricey accommodation on site if you don’t want to move too far, but the restaurant is right in the centre of town and easy walking distance from most other accommodation if you want to save the pennies to splurge on the meal.

Dined on a Sunday night. Due to COVID restrictions there were two sittings of only 10 diners in each. Despite the restrictions, the whole experience was unforgettably excellent. Staff were attentive, and the food was just so good - 16 small dishes over four courses, each dish presented with exquisite attention to detail. Yes, it is expensive, but when you see what they do, the cost is definitely warranted. More than worth the 4 hour drive to get there.

The dinner at the Provenance was worth the long wait during lockdowns and the drive from Melbourne.
The service was outstandingly attentive and knowledgeable, explaining the dishes in detail, including some of the cooking methods.
18 small dishes are served in four courses, every single one delicate and flavoursome.
Poached octopus, vinegar jelly
Ichiyaboshi
Mushroom tofu, katsuobushi salt
Duck heart yakitori, pickled magnolia flowers
Pickles
Grilled house made lap cheong
Sweetcorn, pumpkin seed furikake
Venus clams, sake, butter
Hot smoked Harrietville trout, fermented tomato water, pickled onion
Chirashizushi
Fried blood pudding, tonkatsu sauce
Sweet potato dengaku
Grilled asparagus, karasumi, sake kasu sauce
Chilled housemade udon noodles, citrus dashi
Pork jowl, steamed eggplant, kanzuri
Fried milk, miso sugar
Pickled strawberries, sansho pepper
Fig leaf cream, raspberries, elderflower vinegar granita
This was matched with local wines and a sake.
A beautiful experience, highly recommended for anyone who loves Japanese food.

Degustation is not everyone's cup of tea but at provenance they get it right. From the first course of tiny soya beans in a delicious coating to almond nougat at the end every morsel is delicious and nothing is pretentious. The style is japanese bonito box with beautiful ceramic bowls where you can mix and match. I loved it.Thank you.
