We had the worst and most embarrassing experience at Provenance Restaurant. Will never be going back! We were tourists in Beechworth for the weekend and asked the manager at accommodation, for suggestions of bistro type meals in town. The first three suggestions were booked out...due to Covid restrictions being lifted. The 4th was Provenance. We were able to have an 8pm booking. Unfortunately, Michael who took our booking, failed to mention, that this was a degustation menu, and only thst it was Japanese influenced menu ehen I asked. We were seated and given a menu by a lovely waitress. We asked if there was an a la carte menu, as the menu had minimal dishes on it. 150 was at the top of the menu, no follar sign. We asked the waitress if thus was a tariff. And she confirmed thst it was $150 per person. We told her that we had been misled, and that we would have to leave. I asked her if we would be charged anything, and she stated that we would not be charged. We left the restaurant, and were able go get a late booking there, and had a lovely meal. Decor wasn't wonderful, but food and service were good. Two days later, I checked my card account, and to my amazement, $300 had been deducted by Provenance. So, not only the charge from Provenance, but also the cost of a Chinese meal! I spoke with Michael by phone asking why we had been charged, and why he couldn't have explained that this restaurant only provided a degudtstion menu. He stated that he didn't have to tell me that, and why would he??? He was quite rude. This matter is now in the hands of the banks, but if I fail to receive the full amount back, I will be taking the matter to The Ombudsman. My son is an Executive Chef in ine of Melbourne's best known restaurants and he said this gives restaurants a really bad name, and is totally unethical. He has spoken to several other Executive Chefs, and all are appalled at what has happened!More
We have not experienced this anywhere in the world. Each course was a masterpiece of both visual and taste expression. Now each plate was quite small but the tastes were extraordinary. In our memory was the tofu dish - never been impressed with this substance...before.
We were dumbfounded. Expensive yes, but this was like visiting a food art gallery!More
Great degustation in beautiful Beechworth. Perhaps one element out of 30, that didn't work. A stunning if mini interpretation of fried calimari, very complex mushroom tofu.
ambiance as well with high ceilings and a sort of gold rush affluence. attentive and informed serving team. met...and exceeded expectationsMore
What a lovely restaurant. The degustation was amazing and catered so well for me as a coeliac. The service was top class and very friendly. Wonderful wine and whisky list. Decor smart and minimalist.
Provenance equals any of the top restaurants in Sydney or Melbourne....Don’t miss it if you come to Beechworth.More
Was even better than I had hoped. The tasting menu was great value, the Japanese flavours delicious and each dish was beautifully presented. Service was friendly and helpful. Will be back when I next visit Beechworth.
A beautiful venue with warm friendly staff. Great value tasting menu at $150. All the small dishes were beautifully presented and an amazing array of flavours and textures. Wine list was extensive with a good mix of local and international wines.
I last came here with my wife 4 years ago and wrote a review praising the vegetarian menu dégustation. This year we again stayed in the onsite accommodation, which is spacious, well equipped and peaceful. This year I had 3 vegetarian dishes and a desert...from the à la carte menu. Each was innovative, beautifully presented and delicious. It is imaginative vegetarian food of the highest standard. There are strong Japanese influences in the cuisine and much use of local ingredients, including from the restaurant kitchen garden. The two local Beechworth area wines that we had by the glass were very good.More
