The Boathouse sits right on Shelly Beach only metres from the sand, making it a beautiful spot for a breakfast, lunch or just a coffee. It is a particularly good spot for taking visitors. The décor is beachside-pretty, with a sort of coastal, rustic look. Inside, it’s all white panelled walls, sandstone, big leafy plants and gorgeous displays of flowers. It is a big venue, with lots of indoor seating, including large and small tables and higher benches. However I prefer sitting outside in the small, covered courtyard area to the side, where you look directly across Shelly Beach and over to the headland opposite. There just aren’t many tables outside so you have to be lucky. The food is reliably good. We were there recently for breakfast and had the ricotta hotcakes with lemon curd, mascarpone, poppy seed + berries ($22) and the smoked salmon fritters with caviar, creme fraiche, zucchini and poached eggs ($25). Both were quite large servings and there was a generous amount of smoked salmon. The hotcakes were delicious but are dense and filling and depending on your appetite, they could easily be shared. The only thing that I am not fond of is the way that you have to leave your table to place your order at the inside counter. This always means leaving one or more to stay with the table and tag-team trips back and forth to order. GETTING THERE: There is a large, paid public carpark sitting above Shelly Beach. This is the closest spot. Alternately you can park in Manly and walk around the very pretty paved coastal path that starts at the Manly SLS clubhouse and goes around to Shelly Beach. This is a beautiful 15 minute walk for visitors or tourists.

Had this on my list as a place to visit - walk lovely but it was very crowded and felt they packed people in very close together. Had the fish and chips which was a lot for one person so if you order this, you can share with someone else. Choice of beers not great and overall thought it was expensive for what we got.

Walked to the Boathouse for lunch. It was busy but we found a table and ordered a bucket of prawns and a cucumber and avocado salad. Prawns were very tasty and enough for 4 people to have a taste. I like the idea that food was ordered away from the bar area and delivered to the table within a few minutes of ordering. The position of the place close to the small bay is great and altogether we had a very pleasant lunch.

Such a terrible experience this morning. We sat at what can only be described at bench tables that are literally on top of one another - you can’t walk between them. Some other people ended up sitting next to us on the umbrella stands rather than try to slide in next to the tab without injuring anyone. Kids went up to try and get a menu but there aren’t any. Tables still had food covered in flies from the last people. We and the table on top of us had to take the old plates cups and glasses in. Kids queued up to ask for a menu we’re told there weren’t any and that we needed to look at the chalk board. Kids looked but couldn’t decide. Came out to us and to ask what to do, we went in to be told it was now 11.35 and as breakfast stopped at 11.30 there was no chance of what we’d finally chosen despite the fact that we’d spent 5 minutes tidying up so we could sit down and waiting to be told where we could sit in the first place. They were still trying to sell fish after the floods telling us it was fresh when the fishmongers are all saying they can’t get any because of the pollution. Waited 15 minutes for a coffee and left. Don’t waste a) your money or b) your time it was a totally embarrassing experience for us and the people on the table next to us who’d gone for a special occasion and kept apologising to their parents for not being able to give them better seating. Such a drag on the brand name we won’t be back. Left with two disappointed kids and adults, thanks boathouse. The management really needs to do better.

Lovely location , after some food for children ( teens) box of chips looked the goods , however once box opened it is 1/3 full .. $12 for such a small serve , purchased 3 large boxes and unfortunately was insufficient. Long lines for ordering so clearly few agree with my opinion ( however there is no other option here)

When I have friends from interstate or overseas I try to take them to Manly via ferry then do the coastal walk to Shelly Beach where we stop at The Beachhouse for lunch and drinks. Being situated just across from the beach its perfect for people watching. The food was fabulous we tried the tomato salad, fish & chips, prawns. They have a happy hour which is worth trying. There is a lovely waterfall out the back and the native animals are all around you. This restaurant never disappoints.

We took the lovely scenic walk along the beach from Manly Central to Shelly Beach. On Shelly Beach is this very popular cafe with an excellent happy hour between 2pm and 4pm everyday. My wife enjoyed a smoothy and I enjoyed a beer and a glass of prosecco. We sat in the lush greenery at the rear with lovely water views. We are returning to Manly in April and will be sure to return here.

A beautiful setting for breakfast. The granola was amazing and the bacon flatbread was great but the pancakes were quite heavy and like eating a soaked sponge cake for breakfast- neither of my children nor my husband enjoyed them. The coffee was nice but the almond milk split because it was overheated. Most of the staff were polite and very friendly, especially the lovely lady who took our order.

Having visited the "Boathouse Chain" at Palm Beach I was hoping for a similar experience in this beautiful location. Food was overpriced and very underwhelming. Paying through the nose for average food is so disappointing. It was an insult to be served a prawn roll that came out the size of a child's meal with 5 small prawns on a miniscule roll. Two drinks and rolls our $65 lunch was very unsatisfactory, you pay for the view not the food. Service was indifferent, having eaten and preparing to go a staff member approached me near the entrance and asked me if I needed service. No thanks I have already been seated and served here for the last half an hour or so.

Visited on Easter Saturday and it was spoilt by bossy rude manager who was under pressure as there was a 25 min wait for coffee .. she was snapping at anyone who asked for menu variations which on any other day is granted with a smile... I thought the customers were understanding about wait but upset at being talked in such an aggressive manner .. the food was as usual delicious 😋

I cant give them credit for the weather which was perfect, But the natural ambience off the cafe at the sands edge on shelly beach with view to Manly is hard to beat My wife had her usual bacon and poached eggs. Chiefly presented and cooked well as expected. The mushrooms and poached eggs with frittatta and whole tomato was 9 out off 10,I prefer eating outside in the shade, Inside looked crowded and noisy but i guess valentine day,

The wait for 2 ice coffee was over 25 minutes. The flies where terrible. The ice coffee tasted like banana milkshake I guess they don’t wash the blender correctly. Not worth $17.50 for 2 drinks

We love visiting this beautiful cove and the Boathouse is stylish and meals pleasing. We arrived at 14h15, well before the kitchen closed at 15h00 but we had to request that 2 of our group's meals should be served - 1 was dry and had clearly been standing for a while and the other arrived when some of our party had finished their meal. On 3 occasions we needed to get up to ask for service, the last time to ask, please, that the dirty plates etc be removed. Perhaps the problems resulted because there appeared to be no one allocated to look after our table ... or maybe staff were eager to clean up to go off duty. I was not aware of any manager. Certainly we would return again but we do hope there will be better service control.

The morning walk from the Manly Beachfront to The Boathouse at Shelly Beach was worth it even if you don’t get to eat. Beautiful panoramic views for the entire short walk. Due to Covid restrictions seating was minimal but we did manage to get a seat while waiting for our coffee and food. The bacon & egg roll was delicious and much more than your standard version. Coffee was great too.

Manly
A 40-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay will take you to the famous northern beach of Manly. The beaches here are perfect for learning to surf or spending the day sun-tanning. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a great way to experience Sydney Harbour Bay and the Australian bush land. Along the foreshore, there are plenty of watering holes and wine bars with excellent cuisine. There are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants as well, especially along the family-oriented areas like Shelly Beach. An excellent way to experience Manly is to rent a bike and explore the dedicated bike paths and off road trails. The North Head National Park is another must-see. Located on the southern tip of Manly, North Head National Park offers great bushwalks and panoramic views of the city.
