About
Why Hemingway’s Manly? Ernest Hemingway called Paris his home in the 1920s because, “The most interesting people of the world lived in Paris at that time,” (Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Coco Chanel, etc.) and apparently because the monetary exchange rate made it a cheap place to live. He liked to spend his time in cafes. Some of his favourites were “Les deux Magots”, “Café de Flores”, “La Closerie des Lilas”, where he found his inspiration to write. For Hemingway eating was always more than just preparing and consuming food. It was about the people, the events and the ambience. We here at Hemingway’s share this value therefore we enjoy accommodating you whether it is for dinner, a coffee and pastry while enjoying the beautiful view, a good laugh on Wednesday at our Comedy Night upstairs, or a bottle of wine while listening to live music on Thursday. We think that Manly is home of some of the most interesting people of the world, like Ernest did about Paris. Who knows? Maybe

As we were in the area, we dropped into this restaurant for lunch as we had been there a couple of years ago and we wanted to see if it was still as good now as it was then. And we were not disappointed........the location is perfect opposite the beach and the establishment, whilst not big was very welcoming. They had very good Covid practices in place and we were able to secure an inside table rather than sitting at one of the outside tables. The service was of a very high standard throughout our visit, and the staff were very helpful. The menu was not large however it offered enough choice to satisfy most diners, and the dishes we selected were of a very high standard in terms of quality and quantity at very reasonable prices. Overall a very pleasant dining experience and we were very pleased that we dropped in. Recommended.

Chose this venue for my Birthday party, was driven by their video on FBook, nice ambiente. I prechecked their menu and liked it as Escargots were available. I chose Escargots to start, Steak Frites medium rare as the main. Snails came without shells in a Balsamic jus with mushrooms and no garlic butter, not eatable…Steak was the wrong cut and overdone, not eatable. A few of my friends said their serving was ok to good. My comment as a hobby chef….never change a recipe for a cut-in-stone, imbedded classic dish…Escargots are in shells with massive amount of cholesterol filled garlic butter…to be finished off with Baguette bread. Wrong cut of a Steak…sack the butcher, well done instead of medium rare….get a new chef! Sadly the management were not too concerned…

Wonderful dinner. Everything was delicious with the head of house lady being very attentive. The salmon was so tasty. We felt the steak special was very pricy at $75. I wish the water bottles on the table is chilled. I felt the waitress wearing short skirt and sand shoes was a bit casually dressed. The atmosphere is lovely, and we loved the look of the restaurant.

Me and my partner usually have breakfast out in one of many beautiful places in Manly. Came back to Hemingway’s a week ago after a long break. Our first breakkie there was amazing. I pretty much always order the same things: toast with avocado, smoked salmon and poached eggs. All of the above ingredients were perfect the first time: generous portions and fresh food. The second time there the size of salmon was disappointing - almost half as much as the first time. Our third and probably last time was beyond bad. At first, the waitress brought out a portion of salmon that was incredibly small. Realising this, she left without us asking her and came back with more salmon. However, the quality of the salmon was not great - it was very stringy and did not look fresh. The meal was reasonably tasty, but I was disappointed when, paying the bill, they told me that the salmon was $7 instead of the $5 listed on the menu. And that wasn’t just a little error. I checked my account and realised that they have been systematically charging me $2 extra for the salmon. Talk about false advertising. Very dissatisfied and expected much better from Hemingway’s.

My friend and i came to manly for my birthday and wanted to go somewhere for a nice lunch. As it was my birthday i had money to spend. We sat down in this cafe and noticed that the staff were looking at us as if we weren’t good enough to be there and we didn’t have any money to spend. I felt very uncomfortable and i couldn’t stay there one more minute. We had to leave. This cafe is one of the worst i’ve been to, the staffs attitude is absolutely appalling and the food is extremely overpriced ($50 for a meal!) I will never be going back there and i hope the staff learn how to treat customers better in the future. Not even hemingway would want to come here.

What a great find is Hemingway’s. With Sonia and Emmanuel offering hearty dishes (cassoulet and steak & frites) and delicate ones(scallops with a cauliflower cream and a filet Mignon) and rillettes of substance (so well-sized I was unable to do full justice ti the cassoulet), they don’t put a foot wrong. It was like being in France when we cannot be. Service is plentiful but not OTT, and Sonia looked after us all well - even when we all swapped seats mid meal! Tres charmant (sans any accents). The wine list is good and the pricing on average for a place of this type. We want to come back for a group raclette because, even with the wonderful dishes we had, we had a bit of food envy. Thanks for a great evening Sonia and Emmanuel!

Was in Sydeny for a few days and while visiting Manly decided to have lunch at Hemingway,s. We were attracted to it by it's quirky look and proximity to the beach. We sat inside (there are some outside tables) and ordered a vegi burger and fish burger as well as some cold pressed juices. To my surprise, the burgers were made with large wholemeal buns. It's not often that you get a burger with anything other than a white bun. And, they were delicious. A large vegi patti and a good amount of fish, together with plenty of salad, made them very filling. They have a fairly good selection of meals on the menu if you are not a burger fan.

Amazing dinner in comforting surrounds and the expert hands of Sonja and her team. Delicious plentiful food with attentive and friendly staff. We enjoyed the traditional and tasty rillettes with chargrilled bread, followed by smoky braised beef rib and ratatouille which had a wonderful depth of flavour.

Outdoor seating is lovely right across from Manly beach and service is excellent Food was very average. Smash avo on baguette is not a French dish unfortunately. Avo was like puréed and served on baguette lightly toasted which made it impossible to cut with knife and fork and very chewy . Also served with a dollop of white stuff (purée again :)with no taste ( think they replace the feta or goat cheese with this stuff) and to top it up, the smack avo on baguette is served on a bed of tomato sauce 🤢 with sliced raw carrots in it Weird combination Will only visit for coffees in the future

Can't get into the over-hyped, cramped "Manly Pantry" across the street? Come here. This place was such a wonderful surprise. The atmosphere and service is charming. We sat in the corner seat by the front window and enjoyed people watching without being in the sun. I ordered the Bloody Mary and it was huge and made all my pain go away. We shared the burger and fish and chips. The fish and chips were fresh, crispy, not too oily. The burger was fantastic. I thought...oh a beach front tourist trap will have an average burger. No. This burger was juicy, well seasoned, and really hit the mark. Delivered with a smile from the cook himself I believe. I'm just sorry we didn't stay for dessert. Next time for sure!

Sat down thinking this establishment was a cafe and restaurant. Looking at the menu we were not impressed so we only had coffees. The waitress told us they do not do coffees without ordering a meal. There were a lot of tables empty There was no need for a comment like that. We looked at the other waiters they also looked unhappy. Good coffee though

We came to Manly on a whim and had no dinner plans. Manly is a beach town and most options were bars or fast food, or hotel restaurants. We saw Hemingways and were intrigued because it looked like a cozy little bistro and that is exactly what it is. The French food served here was superb and the ambiance matched. I had the mussels with a sauce to die for. My husband had the bouef bourginon which melted in his mouth. This is true French food done extremely well. Tables are cozy and close to your neighboring diners. We enjoyed meeting a local couple while there.

The food is excellent, and a great addition to Manly's restaurant vibrancy. French food is such a favourite of ours, and hard to find. Hemingway's has an excellent menu of delicious French treats for everyone, and we will definitely be going back to work our way through the menu.

We had dinner tonight, the food was delicious, the atmosphere is great, the music is really cool and the staff is very friendly and caring. They have a French menu, so good. We were missing this kind of food and restaurant in Manly, now we have it. Will go again for sure. Thank you the Hemingway team

Manly
A 40-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay will take you to the famous northern beach of Manly. The beaches here are perfect for learning to surf or spending the day sun-tanning. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a great way to experience Sydney Harbour Bay and the Australian bush land. Along the foreshore, there are plenty of watering holes and wine bars with excellent cuisine. There are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants as well, especially along the family-oriented areas like Shelly Beach. An excellent way to experience Manly is to rent a bike and explore the dedicated bike paths and off road trails. The North Head National Park is another must-see. Located on the southern tip of Manly, North Head National Park offers great bushwalks and panoramic views of the city.
