The place is quaint but that’s all it’s has going for it. The food is something you’d get in a high school cafeteria. Large portions of bland food. My potato pancakes were cold and not crisp. The sad thing is that they could have been...More

Outstanding German Food with an extensive menu; Service was excellent! Located on Pittsburgh's Northside. Several dining areas besides the bar with TV screens to watch NFL/NHL sports. Also serves Sunday Brunch. Penn Brewery in nearby Deutchtown has the best Oktoberfest music! Max's Allegheny Tavern has...More

Ate here decades ago and returned recently while driving through PA. The ambience was comfortably familiar - Max has remained close to it's roots. The bread starter with interesting condiments was a great indicator of the caliber of the rest of the meal. My single...More

Was introduced to this restaurant by chance. Our long time friend had a layover in Pittsburgh and invited us to dinner at Max’s. Pleasantly surprised by the family ambiance being the environment was so low key. The food was great, I ordered the Max’s sausage...More

We were staying just a few blocks away from Max's so we walked and found a great atmosphere, good service, GREAT food in a neighborhood setting. If you like German food and are in Pittsburgh, PA you must stope here for a good treat. Bruce

Our waitress was friendly and attentive, gave us tips on what to do in the city. The sauerkraft was delicious and the sausages are the right amount of spicy.

Stopped for dinner in the bar area and were not disappointed. We had the beer sampler, and a beer each to go along with our meals. We started with the Bavarian pretzels which were fantastic. Then I had the sampler of schnitzel, bratwurst, Knackwurst. Came...More

The restaurant is historic which is cool...food (i.e. schnitzel) was tough and not seasoned, got the bavarian nachos had barely any toppings on it, potato pancakes were unflavored and rubbery...food seemed made quickly and rushed. Nice German beer selection.
